SAMPLE DESIGN
🞂 A sample design is a definite
plan for obtaining a sample
from a given population.
🞂 It refers to the technique or
the procedure the researcher
would adopt in selecting items
for sample.
🞂 It is an important part of
a research design or
plan.
Steps in Sampling Design
rs
e
1. Define the population or
unive
2.State the sampling frame
3.Identify the sampling unit
4.State sampling method
5.Determine the sample size
6.Spell out the sampling plan
7. Select the sample
Define the population or Universe
🞂 It is the first step in developing any sample design.
🞂 The set of objects technically called universe
is clearly defined.
🞂 The universe can be finite or infinite.
🞂 In finite universe the number of items is limited.
🞂 In the case of infinite universe the number of items is
infinite. That means we can't measure the number of units.
E.g. number of stars in the sky.
State the sampling frame
🞂 After defining the population
the sampling frame is to be
stated.
🞂 It is the source list from
samples is to draw.
🞂 It contains the names of all items
of the universe.
🞂 It is the means of representing
the elements of the population.
E.g. telephone book, directory
etc.
Identify the sampling unit
🞂 A decision related to sampling unit is to be taken
before selecting sample for study.
🞂 Sampling unit (e.g. state, village etc) may be
geographical one or a social unit (e.g. a school or
club).
🞂 The researcher should select one or more of
the sampling unit.
State sampling method
🞂 There are number of
methods used for selecting
samples.
🞂 It includes probability
sampling methods, non-
probability sampling
methods.
🞂 Out of this the researcher
should select one method by
which sampling units are to be
selected.
Determine the sample size
🞂 This refers to the number of items to be selected
from the universe.
🞂 The sample size should not be large or small. It should
be optimum.
Spell out the sampling plan
🞂 In this stage the researcher should state the
operational procedures for selection of the sample.
🞂 That means he should decide the techniques, which
are used in selecting the item of sample. In fact it is
the sample design.
Select the sample
🞂 It is the last step. The
needed samples are to be
selected.
🞂 The office and fieldwork is
required to carry out the selection
of the sample.
Features of a Good Sample Design
🞂 The outcome of a good Sample design must be a
truly representative sample.
🞂 The selected sample design should not cause
more errors.
🞂 Sample design should be viable on the basis of
budget constraints.
🞂 A good sample design is able to control systematic
bias effectively.
