Science and technology in China has developed significantly since 1976 when it was established as one of the Four Modernizations. China now has a large scientific research system including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, schools, industrial departments, and local institutes. China is third in the world for manned spaceflight and has ambitious targets to increase spending on research and development to 3% of GDP by 2020. Key areas of research include information technology, agriculture, medicine, genetics, space science, and social sciences. China has made progress in fields such as proteinase inhibitors, hepatitis vaccines, traditional medicine for HIV, genome mapping, climate change research, and space exploration including moon probes and space walks.
