Love the Lord your God with all
your heart, with all your soul, with

New England Primer
The New England Primer
was first published between
1688 and 1690 by English
printer Benjamin Harris, who
had come to Boston in 1686
to escape the brief Catholic
ascendancy under James II.
Used for 200 years.
Supreme Court Challenge
Using Bible verses to teach English and morality in
public schools was challenged in 1844. There were
three different cases that upheld the use of the
Bible for that specific use in public schools, one
being a Supreme Court case of 1844,Vidal v. Gerard,
where a Philadelphia school wanted to teach morals
without using the Bible.
Supreme Court Challenge
The Court said, “Why may not the Bible, and
especially the New Testament, without note or
comment, be read and taught as a divine revelation
in the college; its general precepts expounded, its
evidences explained, and its glorious principles of
morality inculcated?” The court concluded that any
book teaching good morality would certainly be
teaching what the New Testament teaches, so why
not use the original source that doesn’t change.”
Daniel Webster, in his July 4, 1800,
Oration at Hanover, New Jersey:
“To preserve the government we must also preserve
morals. Morality rests on religion; if you destroy the
foundation, the superstructure must fall. When the public
mind becomes vitiated and corrupt, laws are a nullity and
constitutions are waste paper.”
The Engel v Vitale Supreme
Court case of 1962 was the
landmark case that removed
prayer from the public schools.
The single most act that has changed our
educational system in America has been the
removal of school prayer in 1963.
John Dewey, regarded as the architect of
modern education, instigated early changes
to move away from God in education, which
led to promoting a belief in no absolute
truth: “
. . . faith in the prayer-hearing God is an
unproved and outmoded faith. There is no
God and there is no soul. Hence, there is no
need for the props of traditional religion.
With dogma and creed excluded, then
immutable truth is also dead and buried.
There is no room for fixed, natural law or
moral absolutes.”
The Moral Decline in Education

Have we removed God’s

translated from Latin means
“Truth for Christ and the Church.”

Covenant of Tolerance
“I won’t tell you what to do as long
as you don’t tell me what to do.”
Relativism
Tolerance – “You believe what you want as long
as it does not affect me.”
Emerging generation:
– “My truth is as good as your truth.”
58 percent of students said
colleges should “forbid”
speakers “who have a
history of engaging in hate
speech,” with hate speech
defined as “anything one
particular person believes
is harmful, racist, or
bigoted.” Oh, and almost
40 percent believed it was
sometimes acceptable to
shout down or disrupt a
speaker.

Belief in Absolute Truth
76% of Americans say there is no
absolute truth.
67% of born-again Christians say
there is no absolute truth.
If the Foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? Ps 11:3
So I sought for a man among them who
would make a wall, and stand in the gap
before Me on behalf of the land, that I
should not destroy it; but I found no one.
Ezekiel 22:30
If My people who are called by
My name will humble
themselves, and pray and seek
My face, and turn from their
wicked ways, then I will hear
from heaven, and will forgive
their sin and heal their land. 2
Chron 7:14
84% of Christian 18 to 29-year-olds admit that they
have no idea how the Bible applies to their field or
professional interests.

Summary
• Our nation is removing its moral compass in
governing.
• “Tolerance” is the God of our culture today.
• God removes his veil of protection as we remove
Him from the foundations of a nation. He gives us
leaders reflecting our values being expressed.
• The Church must take responsibility.
What can I do as one individual to
make an impact for God on the
education mountain?
What can you do in the following areas of education
to reclaim the education mountain?
Chuck Stetson developed The Bible and Its
Influence, a 390- page textbook now taught in more
that three hundred schools in forty-one states.
What impact can you have in your community’s
public schools?
What can I do as one individual to
make an impact for God on the
education mountain?
The goal of education should be
to equip your young people to engage
the world and influence culture.
How can you support this vision?
What would success look like on
the education mountain?
• There would be more acceptance of biblical
absolutes and recognition of the value the Bible
can bring to the classroom.
• There would be less concern about politically
correct behavior regarding faith expressed in the
public classroom.
• Creationism would be affirmed and taught instead
of Darwinism.
What would success look like on
the education mountain?
• There would be an acknowledgment of our Christian
heritage in the founding of our nation.
• • We would evaluate and embrace truth based on truth
instead of allowing biases to influence what we believe.
• There would be excellence demonstrated in the art of
teaching.
• More people would be in the teaching profession because
they are called to it.
What would success look like on
the education mountain?
• Teachers would model a worldview that reflects a belief that
every human being has the potential to become a great person
with a unique contribution to offer humanity.
• We could live in a pluralistic society and still honor other
viewpoints without the insecurity to conform or defend.
Christians would operate in a pluralistic setting from a
foundation of truth with confidence and greater impact.
• There would be less time spent disciplining in the
classroom and more time learning.
What would success look like on
the education mountain?
• Education would address both mind and spirit.
• There would be divine insights into the design of creation
so science and technology research would yield advances
in every arena: technology and science would impact
cures, food production, environmental recovery, travel and
communication, and so forth—ultimately more creativity
and innovation in all fields of education

Editor's Notes

  • #6: The New England Primer was first published between 1688 and 1690 by English printer Benjamin Harris, who had come to Boston in 1686 to escape the brief Catholic ascendancy under James II. Based largely upon his earlier The Protestant Tutor, The New England Primer was the first reading primer designed for the American colonies. It became the most successful educational textbook published in the colonial and early days of United States history. It was used in what would be our first grade for two hundred years.
  • #29: No moral absolutes “Jesus is the only way!?” – “You’re a bigot”
  • #37: Four legislatures—Georgia in 2006, South Carolina and Texas in 2007, and Tennessee in 2008—have passed legislation based on the research that Chuck’s organization did to encourage high schools to offer courses to their high school students on Bible literacy. Stetson represents a new breed of change agents who seek to use the media and the existing educational system to present a logical reason to show how Judeo-Christian history has impacted our culture and the value it offers for educators. His strategy has been very effective.
