Let’s face it.
Pastoring
isn’t easy!
In some ways, I, too, am a
pastor (to the workplace).
Congregation size: 150,000
Location: 104 countries
Frequency of sermon: one per day
Length of sermons: 2 minutes, 400
words
What I do with disgruntled members:
1 click and they are gone

have such wisdom?”

What if the spiritual climate
of your local church could
radically change by just
making some simple changes
in how you related to the
average church member?

“I teach students who spend $40,000
To learn a language that no one understands.”
Dr. Eddie Gibbs

What is the Church
in the Workplace?
Ekklesia
Was not a religious institution, but was first developed as a ruling assembly
of citizens in the Grecian democracy to govern its city-states.
General public in Jesus’ day understood ekklesia to mean both the secular
institution and the government systems it represented.
Ekklesia (church)
• The Christian Church is the assembly or
association of followers of Jesus Christ.
The Greek term ἐκκλησία, which in its
appearances in the New Testament is
usually translated as "church", means
"assembly".
Ekklesia is a people movement designed to operate
24/7 in the marketplace for the purpose of having an
impact on everybody and everything.

Scattered vs Gathered Church
The gathered church comes together, especially on the Lord’s
Day, for corporate worship and instruction, and to enjoy the
communion of the saints. It is organized and led by its officers
and ministers, and is called to preach the gospel, baptize, and
make disciples.
The scattered church is the body of believers any time they
are not gathered together in a singular place, which is
undoubtedly most of the time.
Life and Ministry of Jesus?
• Carpenter and Rabbi until age 30
Disciples had heard about this rabbi. “He
was different” - Superstar reputation
• Recruited 12 from the workplace for a

• New Testament – Of 132 public
appearance in NT, 122 in the
marketplace
• Of 52 parables Jesus told, 45 had a
workplace context. Of 40 miracles in
the book of Acts, 39 were in the
marketplace.
“So he reasoned in the
synagogue with the Jews and
the God-fearing Greeks, as
well as in the marketplace day
by day with those who
happened to be there.”
- Acts 17:17-18
Paul’s example
…In the marketplace daily
Jesus was more “qualified” to be a
carpenter than the Son of God by
the religious leaders.
“54% of Jesus’ reported teaching
ministry arose out of issues posed
by others” in the scope of daily life
experience. – Lewis and Lewis, LICC
– Source: London Institute Contemporary Christianity
Work in its different forms is mentioned more than 800 times in the
Bible, more than all the words used to express worship, music, praise,
and singing combined.

Problem: We Have Unbiblical View of Work and Ministry
Church leaders often fail to see work as a holy calling.

How to Overcome Fears &
Misconceptions between
Church Leaders &
Workplace Leaders
What happens if you …
Validate that every
member has a
calling that is
spiritual and is as
important as the
pastor’s?
How important was each of the disciple’s role?
”I was called up front to the church to
commission me as the teacher for the
school age children for the year. Later I
wondered why I have never been
recognized for teaching kids five days a
week as a ministry.”
School Teacher
Fears & Misconceptions of Church Leadership
Fear
• Less volunteerism
• Less giving
• Might leave church
• Diminished role
• Less loyalty
Truth
• Volunteerism increases
• More giving
• Becomes a “Competitive
Advantage”
• More connected
• Competitive advantage
Problem?
• Average church member feels inferior
spiritually
• 90% do not feel trained or validated that their
work is a spiritual calling
• Majority of Christians live as “orphans”
instead of sons and daughters

Strategies for
Equipping
What Is Workplace Ministry?
• An evangelism strategy to executives?
• Method of raising money for the local
church?
• Another word for men’s ministry?
• A job placement ministry?
• Another ministry for the local church?
?
What Is Workplace
Ministry?
Workplace ministry is an
intentional focus of equipping
men and women in all spheres
of work and society to
understand and experience
their work and life as a holy
calling from God. It’s not a
separate program in the local
church, it is part of the DNA of
the church.
To be on mission requires that
lay Christians be discipled by
their churches to do three
things:
(1) be a verbal witness to their
friends and colleagues;
(2) serve the needs of their
neighbors, and especially
the poor, whether they
believe as we do or not;
(3) integrate their faith with
their work and engage
culture through their
vocations.

24 Action Steps to You Can
Do without Starting a Program
1. Establish a team of intercessors to pray for
workplace believers, businesses, and pray for God to
establish a ministry to workplace believers in your church.
2. Present real-life examples of workplace
transformation—to inspire personal application in
different types of workplace environments.
3. Preach sermons related
to workplace applications.
4. Conduct a survey among
those in the church that asks this
question: “How might our church
help you apply your biblical faith
in the context of your daily work
life?” Provide five specific things
the church could do.
5. Start an ongoing workplace
ministry/ outreach that mobilizes your
entire congregation into the workplace.
“Every member a minister!”
6. Preach a series of
messages on the
priesthood of all
believers in the context
of work.
Preach on the five-fold ministry
in Ephesians 4 and how these
gifts and offices are found in the
workplace.
7. Remove formal titles of church staff that would
tend to place them spiritually above members in the
church. Reinforce the concept that each person’s call
is equal in the sight of God. (This does not mean
church leaders are not the spiritual leaders and
shepherds.)
8. Avoid addressing or favoring only
those in “business” or those with
influence. Equip and train the whole workforce
for ministry in the workplace. Including mothers,
students, executives, construction workers, and
professionals. Use term “workplace” vs “business”.
9. Affirm workplace believers that their call is
equal to a vocational ministry call in its spiritual
importance.
10. Understand the problem that often separates
workplace believers from church leaders. This
will help you see the heart of a workplace believer.
11. Affirm workplace believers through church
commissioning services focused on the church
recognizing and confirming their calling (vocation) in a
formal way. Labor Day weekend sermon.
12. There are hundreds of workplace ministries
“that can be a resource for your local church.
13. Provide discipleship
opportunities for your people.
TodayGodIsFirst.com
14. Begin a small-group
ministry in the workplace.
Faith&Work Book Resources
www.tgifbookstore.com
15. Read books on the movement and
make them available through your church
bookstore. See TGIFBookstore.com
16. Place a workplace emphasis on your
missions or outreach budget in order to
focus your church in this area. You can also
support workplace ministries of your choice.
17. Invite guest speakers to speak on faith and
work issues to introduce your congregation to the
movement and their unique calling to their vocations.
18. Visit a workplace leader in his/her place of
business. Get an idea of the challenges they face
every day in their work life.
19. Form a
workplace
committee that
meets with the
pastor once a
month to discuss
sermon ideas that
can be taught on
Sunday mornings
that relate to the
average worker.
20. Teach a theology of work to your young
people so they do not have to relearn God’s view
of work.
21. Allow one person each week to stand up and share a brief testimony
on how they experienced God’s presence in their workplace that week. Or,
record a weekly 2 minute video testimony that is played in the service a
few times a month.
