SEXUAL HARASSMENT AT WORKPLACE
What is Sexual Harassment? Have you ever been a victim? Have you ever witnessed any ? Were you able to voice out any such situation? Do you feel safe at your workplace? Does you organization have sexual harassment policy in place?
SEXUAL HARASSMENT  is a behavior. It is defined as unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature. Range of behavior from mild transgressions to actual sexual abuse and assaults.
Referring to an adult  as “HUNK’ or “BABE” Whistling at someone and making sexual comments Telling sexual jokes or stories Asking about sexual fantasies, preferences, or history Making kissing sounds, howling, and smacking lips Repeatedly asking out a person who is not interested Telling lies or spreading rumors about a person's personal sex life Hot Babe
Looking at a person up and down  or Staring Blocking a person's path or following a person Giving personal gifts Displaying sexually suggestive visuals Making sexual gestures with hands or through body movements Making facial expressions such as winking, throwing kisses, or licking lips
Giving a massage around the neck or shoulders Touching the person's clothing, hair, or body Hugging, kissing, patting, or stroking Touching or rubbing oneself sexually around another person Standing close or brushing up against another person
A Cornell Law Review article entitled "Exacerbating the Exasperated: Title VII Liability of Employers for Sexual Harassment" reported that between 40% to 90% of women in the United States workforce have been the victims of some form of sexual harassment on the job. Ninth Circuit Judge Kozinski – “Every   woman – who has spent time in the workforce in the last two decades can tell at least one story about being the object of sexual harassment” Majority of incidents – Occur between a supervisor and his subordinate . Study of Fortune 500 companies – 2/3 rd  of sexual harassment complaints were brought against a woman’s immediate supervisor or another person with greater power

Hostile environment sexual harassment.  It occurs when physical, verbal, or visual sexual harassment is severe or pervasive enough to create a hostile or abusive work environment. Comments about your body, sexual remarks, pornographic pictures displayed at the workplace, and touching and grabbing may all create a hostile work environment.

Quid pro quo sexual harassment  A Latin term meaning "this for that," occurs when your boss offers you benefits, or threatens to change your working conditions, based on your response to his demands for sexual favors.

As an employee : If your behavior offends an employee, stop that behavior. Ask yourself  Could your behavior offend or hurt people at your workplace?  Could your behavior be interpreted by another as sexual harassment?  Would you like your behavior to be discussed by others?  Would you like your friend, partner, child or sibling to be treated in the same manner?
Do not disbelieve the victim  Encourage and support the victim Be professional at all times and set positive example Avoid making assumptions.  Think before making personal comments.  Be supportive of people who wish to talk about being sexually harassed and  Direct them to the appropriate persons / authorities.
Speak out  Keep records, Tell Someone, Create a witness to the behavior  Set your own boundaries  Be aware of situations and people who may harm you  Trust your own instincts about possible danger  Get a medical check-up  Report sexual harassment to the appropriate person in the organization

Sexual Harassment is now becoming an acceptable behavior Victims do not voice out due to fear, shame and rejections Respect for Human beings is deteriorating Fighting against “WRONG” is Right
