SignalFx: Making Cassandra Perform as a Time Series Database

SignalFx ingests, processes runs analytics against, (and ultimately stores) massive numbers of time series streaming in parallel into our service which provides an analytics-based monitoring platform for modern applications. We've chose to build our time series database (TSDB) on Cassandra for it's read and write performance at high load. This presentation will go over our evolution of optimizations to squeeze the most performance out of the TSDB to date and some steps we'll be taking in the future.

• matching the workload to the database is very important
• load is much more dependent on rate of writes than on volume
of data written
• for our very write-heavy workload we saw 4x performance
improvement by doing fewer, larger writes

OpenTSDB is an open source distributed time series database for storing large amounts of metrics data and performing fast queries. It is scalable and can store trillions of data points across multiple servers. Data is stored in HBase and queries are performed using a simple query language. OpenTSDB 2.x includes new features like salting to distribute writes across servers, compact storage formats using column appends, and downsampling to fill in missing data during aggregation.

It finds that with 50 nodes, Aerospike achieved a median latency of 7ms and 83% of requests under 16ms latency for 1 million writes per second. CPU utilization was only 50-60% due to overhead. Network bottlenecks were identified, and optimizations like DPDK helped achieve 4.2 million reads per second with 90% under 4ms latency. Live migrations can impact highly consistent databases and their applications. Local SSDs provide good performance as an alternative to RAM and were benchmarked positively with Aerospike.

The Cassandra architecture shines at ensuring a very high availability of data even while nodes are failing or are overloaded. On the other hand, query latency will often rise during these events, especially on the higher percentiles. Many improvements have been made to reduce this effect over the past years. This talk will focus on one in particular: Speculative Retries. Introduced in Cassandra 2.0 on the server side and in the Java Driver 3.0 on the client side, this strategy remains complex to fully understand and to finely tune. This talk will deep dive into theoretical and practical aspects of Speculative Retries, showing the effect of tuning strategies with ad-hoc benchmarks. OpenTSDB for monitoring @ CriteoNathaniel Braun

OpenTSDB is used at Criteo for monitoring their large Hadoop infrastructure which includes over 2500 servers running many different services like HDFS, YARN, HBase, Kafka, and Storm. OpenTSDB was chosen because it can handle the scale of metrics collected, store metrics for long periods of time with fine-grained resolution, and is easily extensible to add new metrics. It uses HBase for storage which is optimized for the time series data stored in OpenTSDB and can scale to meet Criteo's needs of storing billions of data points and handling high query loads.

Chronix is a time series database that can efficiently store billions of time series data points in a small amount of disk space and retrieve data within milliseconds. It works by splitting time series into fixed-size chunks, compressing the chunks, and storing the compressed chunks and associated metadata in Solr/Lucene records. Chronix provides common time series aggregations, transformations, and analyses through its API. The developers tuned Chronix's performance by evaluating different compression techniques and chunk sizes on real-world datasets. Chronix outperformed other time series databases in storage needs, query speed, and memory usage in their tests.

Even though we had abandoned the Cassandra in all our products, we would like to share our works here. Why we abandoned the Cassandra in our products?
