Charles Kingsford-Smith was a pioneering Australian aviator born in 1897 who joined the military during World War I. He shot down two planes, was wounded, and received military honors from King George V. After the war, he gave public joyrides and became one of the first pilots for Qantas, making the first commercial flight across Australia. In 1928, he made the first flight across the Pacific Ocean. However, in 1935 he disappeared without a trace while attempting to fly from England to Australia, and was never found.
