Spirituality is the quality of being concerned with
the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or
physical things.
Introduction
 Spiritual health is evolving as an important
complementary tool in the day-to-day medical
practice in the modern era……
 Many medical and social scientists have attempted to
demystify spirituality and spiritual health.
 Clarity of spiritual health attributes has helped in
developing learning modules for its training and
development.
 Integration of spiritual health approach in clinical
care can definitely augment conventional medical
management and helps in early recuperation.
Defining Health
 The disease and health are not only matter of body, but
also mind and spirit.
“WHO defines Health as “ a state of complete physical,
mental, social well being and not merely of the absence of
disease or infirmity.”
This emphasis we should look beyond bio-medical to attain
mental, social, well-being including spiritual aspect
Meaning of Spirituality
The word “spirit” is derived from the Latin words “spiritus” (meaning
breath, courage, vigor, or soul) and the word “spirare” (meaning to breathe) .
“Spirituality is the act of using our inner resources of
peace, love, positivity and compassion for the benefits
and healing of ourselves and others”
DEFINING “SPIRITUAL HEALTH”
MEANING AND
PURPOSE OF LIFE
CONNECTING TO GOD
What is Spirituality: Reflection of Values
Values such as
 compassion, humility, tolerance, love, silence
 co-operation,
 Discipline, Respect,passion, responsiblity
 peacefulness, and
 self-care,
Encourages participants to explore using them in their
personal lives and professional practice , not a substitute for
medical science or clinical skill and resources, but it can
enable a more integrated approach to healthcare
Dimensions of Spiritual Health
1.Religious Dimension: “Spiritual health means to move toward
God”.
2Individualistic Dimension: Having good moral character and decent beliefs.
“A person who enjoys spiritual health does not have negative moral
characteristics and wrong beliefs”
3.Material World-Oriented Dimension:
Well-wishing, helping others without expecting them to return favors,
feeling of closeness and harmony with the universe, and human connection
with himself, others and the nature based on moral virtues.
Spiritual well being has two components
 Religious Well-being –refers to the connection with God or
higher being
 Existential Well-being, which pertains to the meaning and
purpose of life
Community wellbeing
 Community wellbeing is the combination of social,
economic, environmental, cultural, and political conditions
identified by individuals and their communities as essential
for them to flourish and fulfill their potential.”
 When we look at community as a whole, we find three
attributes that play a large role in wellbeing:
 connectedness,
 liveability, and
 equity.
Four Dimensions: Literature review showed
spiritual health unites the physical , mental,
and social dimensions
Why do we go for spirituality?
 When medical care becomes unaffordable for the
patients suffering from the chronic illness or some
diseases or death or loss in the family ask the
question ?
 Why is with me? Why not with others?
 What sin they did ? Consequences of that Sin….
 Where is a God? Not listened faith and believe
The basic characteristics of spiritual health
 Spiritual lifestyle,
 Connection with the self , others, God, and nature
 Asking about the meaning and purpose of life,
 Transcendence
 What nature has created is best.
 Changes made by man are worst.
Mental Health
 I love you. Not for what you are.
 But for what I am when I am
with you.
