• MANILA, Philippines -- Stakeholders of Philippine
basketball have committed their full support to
the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) in its
bid to put together the best national team
possible for next year's FIBA Basketball World
Cup.
• This, after an SBP board meeting on Monday led
by chairman Senator Sonny Angara, where
federation president Al Panlilio presented the
plans for the staging of the World Cup to
representatives from the PBA, UAAP, NCAA, and
other major basketball organizations in the
country.
• During the meeting, Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot
Reyes also presented his roadmap in building the
men's basketball team for the coming months.

• He identified the best players from the PBA, UAAP,
NCAA, and professional leagues overseas with the
aim of performing in the FIBA World Cup Asian
qualifiers, reclaiming the gold medal in the
Southeast Asian Games, and competing against
the world's best in the World Cup next year.
• The PBA has previously confirmed that it will only
hold two conferences next season to give way for
the national team's preparation for the World
Cup. This will give the players three months to
build chemistry and familiarity.

Boxing: Vargas survives
knockdown to dethrone Magsayo
A knockdown in the ninth round was not enough as Mark Magsayo
ceded his WBC featherweight title to Mexican challenger Rey Vargas
in a 12-round scrap, Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Alamodome
in San Antonio, Texas.
Magsayo was making the first defense of the title that he won last
January against Gary Russell Jr., and his reign proved to be a short
one.
Vargas, 31, emerged as the winner via split decision, with 2 judges
scoring the bout 115-112 in his favor. The other judge scored the
bout 114-113 for Magsayo.
The Mexican is now a two-division world champion, having
previously won the WBC super bantamweight championship before
moving up in weight. Vargas also remains unbeaten, improving to
36-0 in his professional career.

Jalalon plays hero as Magnolia
survives NLEX in OT, sets semis date

MANILA, Philippines – Jio Jalalon delivered the big hits
in overtime as Magnolia turned back NLEX, 112-106, to
reach the semifinals of the PBA Philippine Cup at the
Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, July 31.
Jalalon scored 7 of his 16 points in the extra period
and finished with 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals to
help the Hotshots survive the pesky Road Warriors in
their do-or-die quarterfinal clash.
Magnolia will face TNT in a best-of-seven semifinals – a
rematch of the All-Filipino finals last year.

Filipinos celebrated the historic victory of the
Philippine National Women’s Football team as they

Sunday and outlasted NLEX with a 112-106 overtime victory to
gain a semifinal seat in the PBA Philippine Cup at Mall of Asia
Arena.
