MIGRATION PATH
What is the Migration Path to SQL 2012?
Direct Upgrade:Upgrade Directly to SQL 2012
• SQL Server 2005:SP4 is required.
• SQL Server 2008:SP2 is required.
• SQL Server 2008 R2:SP1 is required.
In-Direct Upgrade:Upgrade to SQL 2005 or 2008 then to SQL 2012
• SQL Server 2000:SP4 is required.

MIGRATION STRATEGIES
In-place:Using the SQL Server Setup program to directly upgrade an
instance of SQL Server 2000,2005,2008 to SQL Server 2012.The older
instance of SQL Server is replaced.
Side-by-side:Using steps to move all or some data data from an
insatance of SQL Server(2000,2005,2008) to a separate instance of
SQL Server 2012.There are two main variations of the side-by-side
upgrade strategy:
• One server:The new instance exists on the same server as the
target instance.
• Two servers:The new instance exists on a different server than the
target instance.

MIGRATION METHODS
• Backup/Restore
• Detach/Attach
• Manual schema rebuild and data export/import
• Log shipping
• Copy Database Wizard

APPLICATION RECONFIGURATION
• All applications need to be tested and verified to work against new
SQL Server databases.
• Check with vendor if the software version is certified to work with
new SQL Server and get assurance for their continued support.

MIGRATION BACKUP
• Take backup before upgrade.
• Take backup after upgrade before any configuration or changes.

UPGRADING VERY LARGE
DATABASES(VLDBS)
• Time and Hard disk Space constraint.
• Databases in TBs can take days to copy over a network
• VLDBs critical for business and tolerate very little downtime.
• What happens if the Migration of a VLDB takes more time than the
Maintenance Window?

PRE-MIGRATION TASKS
• Rollup needed Service Packs,Updates & Hotfixes.
• Run DBCC CHECKDB on all databases to make sure that they are
in a consistent state.
• Backup all System & User Databases
• Run the Upgrade Advisory Tool
• Check for Best Practices

POST-MIGRATION TASKS
After the completion of the upgrade tasks,below steps are required:
• Integrate the new SQL Server instance into the Application and
database server environment.
• Determine whether the upgrade was successful.
• Decommission and Uninstall.

CONSIDERATIONS
• What criteria would qualify the upgrade as successful?
• Do you have a tester or a team of testers who can verify that the
applications that depend on SQL Server work correctly after

Automating Data Quality Processes at ReckittDatabricks

Reckitt is a fast-moving consumer goods company with a portfolio of famous brands and over 30k employees worldwide. With that scale small projects can quickly grow into big datasets, and processing and cleaning all that data can become a challenge. To solve that challenge we have created a metadata driven ETL framework for orchestrating data transformations through parametrised SQL scripts. It allows us to create various paths for our data as well as easily version control them. The approach of standardising incoming datasets and creating reusable SQL processes has proven to be a winning formula. It has helped simplify complicated landing/stage/merge processes and allowed them to be self-documenting. But this is only half the battle, we also want to create data products. Documented, quality assured data sets that are intuitive to use. As we move to a CI/CD approach, increasing the frequency of deployments, the demand of keeping documentation and data quality assessments up to date becomes increasingly challenging. To solve this problem, we have expanded our ETL framework to include SQL processes that automate data quality activities. Using the Hive metastore as a starting point, we have leveraged this framework to automate the maintenance of a data dictionary and reduce documenting, model refinement, testing data quality and filtering out bad data to a box filling exercise. In this talk we discuss our approach to maintaining high quality data products and share examples of how we automate data quality processes.

4. MIGRATION PATH What is the Migration Path to SQL 2012? Direct Upgrade:Upgrade Directly to SQL 2012 • SQL Server 2005:SP4 is required. • SQL Server 2008:SP2 is required. • SQL Server 2008 R2:SP1 is required. In-Direct Upgrade:Upgrade to SQL 2005 or 2008 then to SQL 2012 • SQL Server 2000:SP4 is required.

5. MIGRATION STRATEGIES In-place:Using the SQL Server Setup program to directly upgrade an instance of SQL Server 2000,2005,2008 to SQL Server 2012.The older instance of SQL Server is replaced. Side-by-side:Using steps to move all or some data data from an insatance of SQL Server(2000,2005,2008) to a separate instance of SQL Server 2012.There are two main variations of the side-by-side upgrade strategy: • One server:The new instance exists on the same server as the target instance. • Two servers:The new instance exists on a different server than the target instance.

18. APPLICATION RECONFIGURATION • All applications need to be tested and verified to work against new SQL Server databases. • Check with vendor if the software version is certified to work with new SQL Server and get assurance for their continued support.

20. MIGRATION BACKUP • Take backup before upgrade. • Take backup after upgrade before any configuration or changes.

21. UPGRADING VERY LARGE DATABASES(VLDBS) • Time and Hard disk Space constraint. • Databases in TBs can take days to copy over a network • VLDBs critical for business and tolerate very little downtime. • What happens if the Migration of a VLDB takes more time than the Maintenance Window?

22. PRE-MIGRATION TASKS • Rollup needed Service Packs,Updates & Hotfixes. • Run DBCC CHECKDB on all databases to make sure that they are in a consistent state. • Backup all System & User Databases • Run the Upgrade Advisory Tool • Check for Best Practices

23. POST-MIGRATION TASKS After the completion of the upgrade tasks,below steps are required: • Integrate the new SQL Server instance into the Application and database server environment. • Determine whether the upgrade was successful. • Decommission and Uninstall.

CONSIDERATIONS • What criteria would qualify the upgrade as successful? • Do you have a tester or a team of testers who can verify that the applications that depend on SQL Server work correctly after upgrade? • Downtime & Maintenance Window? • Different SQL Server Editions(Standard,Enterprise,Web,Datacenter…etc)
