StackSync is an open source personal cloud that aims to provide interoperability, privacy and user control over data by integrating with the OpenStack Swift object storage platform. It allows users to share, store and synchronize files across devices through a desktop client that communicates with a StackSync server, which interacts with Swift for data storage and a metadata database. Key features include file versioning, sharing, and synchronization conflicts are resolved based on which user most recently modified a file. An API allows communication between the StackSync server and other clients.

Abstract: Cloud Computing has had phenomenal growth over the past year and continues to entrench itself in all facets of IT. Cloud Computing is definitely more than just a buzz word or a passing trend. Now the heavy weights like IBM, HP and SAP are ready lock horns with existing players like Amazon, Salesforce and Microsoft whose offerings have matured over a period of time. Besides these big players, a lot of start ups are coming up with innovative offerings in this space.
The talk is about the current state of affairs in the cloud computing. It will cover the products, services and offerings that have been making a lot of noise in the cloud computing space.
Following are the main points that will be covered in the talk:
1. New Players: A lot of enterprise market giants are now coming to the cloud party offering infrastructure and platform services. IBM has come out with its SmartCloud for private as well as public clouds. Oracle has released its Cloud-in-a-box solution. The talk will cover all the new offerings by these enterprise giants.
2. Old Players, New offerings – Amazon being the leader in the Cloud Infrastructure space has rolled out a lot of new products and services, strengthening its hold in the market and expanding into the PaaS segment. Amazon Beanstalk, Amazon CloudFormation and EC2 Dedicated instances most notably have the power to be game changers. Building High-Throughput, Low-Latency Pipelines in Kafkaconfluent William Hill is one of the UK’s largest, most well-established gaming companies with a global presence across 9 countries with over 16,000 employees. In recent years the gaming industry and in particular sports betting, has been revolutionised by technology. Customers now demand a wide range of events and markets to bet on both pre-game and in-play 24/7. This has driven out a business need to process more data, provide more updates and offer more markets and prices in real time.
At William Hill, we have invested in a completely new trading platform using Apache Kafka. We process vast quantities of data from a variety of feeds, this data is fed through a variety of odds compilation models, before being piped out to UI apps for use by our trading teams to provide events, markets and pricing data out to various end points across the whole of William Hill. We deal with thousands of sporting events, each with sometimes hundreds of betting markets, each market receiving hundreds of updates. This scales up to vast numbers of messages flowing through our system. We have to process, transform and route that data in real time. Using Apache Kafka, we have built a high throughput, low latency pipeline, based on Cloud hosted Microservices. When we started, we were on a steep learning curve with Kafka, Microservices and associated technologies. This led to fast learnings and fast failings.
In this session, we will tell the story of what we built, what went well, what didn’t go so well and what we learnt. This is a story of how a team of developers learnt (and are still learning) how to use Kafka. We hope that you will be able to take away lessons and learnings of how to build a data processing pipeline with Apache Kafka.

Building High-Throughput, Low-Latency Pipelines in Kafkaconfluent William Hill is one of the UK’s largest, most well-established gaming companies with a global presence across 9 countries with over 16,000 employees. In recent years the gaming industry and in particular sports betting, has been revolutionised by technology. Customers now demand a wide range of events and markets to bet on both pre-game and in-play 24/7. This has driven out a business need to process more data, provide more updates and offer more markets and prices in real time.
At William Hill, we have invested in a completely new trading platform using Apache Kafka. We process vast quantities of data from a variety of feeds, this data is fed through a variety of odds compilation models, before being piped out to UI apps for use by our trading teams to provide events, markets and pricing data out to various end points across the whole of William Hill. We deal with thousands of sporting events, each with sometimes hundreds of betting markets, each market receiving hundreds of updates. This scales up to vast numbers of messages flowing through our system. We have to process, transform and route that data in real time. Using Apache Kafka, we have built a high throughput, low latency pipeline, based on Cloud hosted Microservices. When we started, we were on a steep learning curve with Kafka, Microservices and associated technologies. This led to fast learnings and fast failings.
In this session, we will tell the story of what we built, what went well, what didn’t go so well and what we learnt. This is a story of how a team of developers learnt (and are still learning) how to use Kafka. We hope that you will be able to take away lessons and learnings of how to build a data processing pipeline with Apache Kafka.
