 Two types of Stigma. Stigma
Public Stigma:
Society collectively reinforces negative
stereotypes about mental illness.
Self-stigma:
when individuals accept the negative attitudes of
society and come to believe they are less worthy
of respect than others due to their illness.

threatening and uncomfortable.
 These attitudes frequently foster stigma and discrimination towards people with
mental health problems.
 Such reactions are common when people are brave enough to admit they have a mental
health problem.
 They can often lead on to various forms of exclusion or discrimination – either within social
circles or within the workplace.

 Person with mental health problem can’t be recovered. Actually, mentally ill people can get
better.
 Therapy is a wastage of time when you can get a pill. But it depends on individual, treatment
might include therapy, medication or both.
 Friends and family can’t do anything for person suffering from mental health issues. But the
fact is that loved ones can be important influences to help someone get treatment and service
they need.
 Another myth regarding mental illness is that prevention doesn’t works. In fact it is possible to
prevent mental illness.

Why hard to talk about mental health?
 Shame, stigma and the fear of weak.
 It's just so easy, and tempting, to say nothing.
 Fear of not being understood.
 Fear of making things worse.
How this stigma interfere with mental health care?
 People don’t seek for mental health care to avoid the label of mental illness.
 It diminishes self-esteem and robs people of social opportunities.
 Stigma makes a person unacceptable in the society that leads to worsen
mental health condition.
 Feeling shame would resist disclosure which would result in no treatment.

 Talk openly about mental health.
 Educate yourself and others about mental health.
 Be conscious to not use stigmatizing words.
 Be conscious to not use stigmatizing words.
 Encourage equality in how people perceive mental illness.
 Show empathy towards people with a mental illness.
 Governmental supervision of this issue for taking standard measures to control.
