Supporting (UKRI) OA monographs at
Salford
Wendy Taylor (Open Research Coordinator)
• Salford has small number of UKRI funded researchers & most publish articles
• All researchers with UKRI projects within the timescale & any new awards notified
of requirements
• Sessions held to answer questions and explain requirements – poor attendance
• Website updated but we don’t have an application form. Key message is to notify
us early & we’ll work with you
• Budget arrangements still in progress, but discussions held with finance officer
• Have received two enquiries
• one a chapter, already being published OA
• a couple of books being planned, but early days
Support for UKRI funded authors
Cost: We support sustainable, equitable and cost-effective OA monograph
business models over costly Book Processing Charges (BPC).
Equitable Access: We champion universal access to knowledge, removing
geographical and financial barriers.
Academic Excellence: We advocate for diverse, quality-driven scholarship through
OA monographs that encourage interdisciplinary cooperation and wider scholarly
engagement.
Transparency and Accountability: By openly sharing research outputs, we
contribute to a transparent research environment that encourages peer review,
accountability, collaboration, and public engagement.

resources/salfordauthors
Session to provide staff with knowledge on OA books
& relate to their own teams & roles
Discussion starters:
• We don’t purchase open access books for the library, so
we don’t need to include them in our catalogue
• Open access books are no different to the ebooks we
buy
• Open access books are freely available, so we don’t
need to pay for them
“Things you don't know about open access
books (but should!)” - session for all Library
staff
“Choosing a book publisher” workshop
As well as providing information about open access publishing models and benefits,
session provides examples of ebooks crisis to highlight issues with current publishing
& licencing models and benefits of open content models
• Reading list title
• Print: £49 per copy
• eBook: Only available
as a 1-user licence for
£397.
• Salford Author.
• Print: £16.99 per
copy.
• eBook: Not available.
