The Surat Municipal Corporation in India has started an aquifer mapping study along the Tapi River, making it the first urban local body in India to undertake such a study. The study involves using helicopter surveys over a 268 square kilometer area along the river to identify and locate confined and saturated aquifers up to 500 meters beneath the riverbed. The data collected will help locate wells and plan future water supply projects.
