The concept of sustainable tourism has grown out
of the concept of sustainable development (SD),
whose most popular definition has arisen from the
World Commission on Environment and
Development(the Brundtland Commission).
Their 1986 report (Our Common Future) defined SD
as: development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainable Development
Sustainable Development is an old concept.
"Sustainable development is development that meets
the needs of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own
needs." [UNEP, 1987]

Sustainable Development Principles
Four basic principles are crucial to the concept of
sustainability:
1. The idea of holistic planning, cross- sectoral
planning and strategy making
2. The importance of preserving essential ecological
processes
3. The need to protect both human heritage and
biodiversity
4. The requirement that development should be
carried out so that productivity does not deplete
resources for the long term and future generations

present and future generations, ethically and Socially
just and culturally adapted, ecologically viable and

Principles of Sustainable Tourism
The concept of sustainability as a resource
development and management philosophy is
permeating all levels of policy and practice relating
to tourism, from local to global.
Sustainable tourism can fulfil economic, social, and
aesthetic needs while maintaining cultural integrity
and ecological processes.
10/12/2014
15
AP.KISHOR JAHAN
It can provide for today’s hosts and guests while
protecting and enhancing the same opportunity for
the future.
sustainable tourism involves making hard political
choices based on complex social, economic, and
environmental trade-offs.
10/12/2014
16
AP.KISHOR JAHAN
Tourism should be planned and managed in a
sustainable manner, with due regard for the
protection and appropriate economic uses of the
natural and human environment in host areas.
Tourism should be undertaken with equity in mind
to distribute fairly benefits and costs among tourism
promoters and host peoples and areas.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND THE SOCIO-CULTURAL
IMPACTS
The sustainable development approach is
particularly important when applying socio-cultural
impacts.
Because this sector depends mostly on tourist
attractions and activities that are related to both the
natural environment, historic and cultural heritage
of an area.
10/12/2014
25
AP.KISHOR JAHAN
If these resources are degraded or destroyed, then
tourism cannot thrive.
Maintaining the desirable aspects of cultural
traditions and ethnic identities is another important
element of conserving the cultural heritage of an
area.

Conclusion
If tourism is to be sustainable it must move away
from its traditional growth-oriented model to one
concerned with a sustainable set of goals and
principles.
Sustainable tourism must be seen as a goal in
tourism development.
