7. Features of Open Learning :
Learner- centric

Freedom to choose subjects, according to one’s need, interests and
abilities.
Credit accumulation facility over a period of 5 years.
Continuous assessment through tutor marked assignment.
Opportunity to continue education using ICT and modern
communication.
Learning support through Personal Contact Programme [PCPs].
Provision of re- admission after 5 years.
Transfer of credits from CBSE and State Open School students upto 2
subjects.
8. Courses and Programmes :
ELEMENTARY :
Open Basic Education [OBE] at A level, B level, C level equivalent to class
3, 5, 8 respectively of formal education offered in association with
registered voluntary organization/ non- government organizations
known as accredited agencies.
Learners under OBE are 6-14 years and above 14 years.
SECONDARY :
Leading to secondary school certificate
Apart from Hindi and English medium the course if offered in Urdu,

9. SENIOR- SECONDARY :
Leading to Senior Secondary Certificate
Apart from Hindi and English medium, the course is offered in Urdu

11. Facilitating PWDs :
To cater to the special need of people who are physically, mentally challenged,
socially and geographically isolated marginalized and are from disadvantaged
sections such as street children, working children, rural women NIOS has special
accredited institutions called Special Accredited Institutions for Education of the
disadvantaged [SAIED].
There are 84 such SAIED study centres all over India.
There is fee concession to the extent of 50% for PWDs.
Study centres are taken as examination centres so that a candidate with disability may
appear in a familiar environment .
General and specific relaxations [Disability wise] during NIOS examinations.
Disability wise Amanuensis are given at the time of examination.
