This document provides background information on initiatives by the European Union and World Health Organization related to breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices. It summarizes data from 47 documents identified on rates of breastfeeding and complementary feeding by socioeconomic status in European countries. The key findings show that while EU national datasets on these practices by socioeconomic status do exist, they are often only available in national reports and languages. The document recommends several actions for the European Commission, including collecting and comparing existing EU member state data, conducting literature reviews to identify successful interventions and recommendations, and further research on improving practices among lower socioeconomic groups and teenage mothers. The overarching goal is to help reduce health inequalities by informing policies that support breastfeeding and complementary feeding.
