2. LESSON OBJECTIVES
AT THE END OF THIS
MODULE YOU ARE
EXPECTED TO:
1. Define development
and explain sustainable
development;
2. Examine the agenda
of Sustainable
Development Goals;
4. • Development is
defined as a process,
system, or procedure.
• Oxford defines
development as “a
process and an event
constituting a new
stage in a changing
situation”.
DEFINING DEVELOPMENT:
5. • Development of the
other parts of the
system could be
unfavourable to the
development of other
thus creating conflicts
structurally and
systematically.
DEFINING DEVELOPMENT:
6. • However, critics of
global development
argued that not all
countries equally gain
from globalization.
DEFINING DEVELOPMENT:
7. The condition in which the
developing and less
developed countries suffer
from the downside effects
of development and
change is called
"MALDEVELOPMENT"
11. WHAT IS
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT?
• Described by Bruntland
Commission as “development that
meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet
their own needs”.
12. THE CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IS
CONSTRUCTED ON SIX DIFFERENT DEFINITIONS FROM THE LENS
OF THE ECONOMIST PAUL STREETEN (1991) AND GOULET (2000).
1. The maintenance and replacement of different assets
2. Maintaining the environmental conditions for the benefit of all
3. Resiliency or ability to adjust and cope with the changes and crises
4. The avoidance of internal and external debts in the future
5. Fiscal and political sustainability
6. The ability to hand over programs and projects to the decision and
control of the citizens
13. S U S TA I N A B L E D E V E L O P M E N T
G O A L S ( S D G )
14. • The idea is to mobilize the effort of the member-
countries of UN, rich or poor, developed or developing
in addressing the global problems of poverty,
inequality and impacts of climate change in the next
fifteen years.

EMPHASIZING SGD
21. CRITICISMS ON
SDG
There are only 34 out
169 targets from the
17 goals are
quantifiable.
Reduction efforts should
be replaced by
elimination on the
problem of poverty and
unemployment.
Since this is a global goal
every nation, including the
richest and developing
economies must make its
own targets and agenda.
FAR WIDER SCOPE GOING FOR ZERO UNIVERSALITY
22. CRITICISMS ON
SDG
Aside from inequality
attentions should be
given too to other global
concerns.
High focus on sustainable
development on air,
consumption and
environmental problems
A balance of
responsibilities. Intensify
domestic policies with the
support of international
bodies.
LEAVE NO ONE
BEHIND
FOCUSED BALANCED
23. 1. According to Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations, the
development has four dimensions and these are economic development, human
development, territorial development and sustainable development.
2. The principle of sustainable development is that development is a need that
must be practiced based on the needs of human and environment. Hence,
development efforts must consider the welfare of the future generation including
the ecological conditions.
3. For SDGs to materialize by 2030, higher level of commitments and active
participation is essential. Although fulfilling SDGs is a global partnership among
states, national governments have the ownership and authority to make and
implement national policies adhering to the objectives of SDGs.
4. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals as part of the agency’s flagship
goal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The mantra of “leaving no one
behind” is considered in establishing these 17 goals.
5. The SDGs was criticized for being highly demanding and transformational in
several ways.
