• #4: Impact on developersWhen you think devices, understandably most people think about their phone. The connectivity and computing power in a smartphone enables you to carry the equivalent of a number of other devices in your pocket: camera, gps, dvd player, cd player, radio, game console . . .Landlines were passed by mobiles in 2002 (peaking at 1.3B). By 2009, 4.7B mobile subscribers. (Meeker/ International Telecomunications Union 2012)400M mobile phones in China. 25M only read books on their phone.But thinking of “devices” as just mobile phones and tablets is short sighted. In our everyday lives we are surrounded by sensors and computing devices that are connected to the Internet: From devices that can tweet when a potted plant needs water to the FitBit or Nike Fuel sensor you wear to monitor your own activities, to the smart lightbulbs and interactive T-shirts to medical devices that help save lives daily.The number of devices connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people on earth in 2008. • #5: What will drive and power this explosion of devices? Services. Connected-software that can do everything from provide simple content updates to amazing experiences driven by mechanical learning taking place in a server farm half a world away.Services provides a means for personalizing an app, for adapting an experience over time and for enabling new business models.By year-end 2013, consumer cloud services for accessing content will be integrated into 90% of all connected devices.(Gartner, Nov 2011)IDC, a tech research firm, recently estimated that revenue from public cloud services exceeded $30.5 billion in 2011 and will grow to a staggering $72.9 billion in 2015. This growth is approximately four times faster than the IT market as a whole.According to Forrester, 46 million Americans used cloud computing services in 2010. Nearly 10 million in that group used paid services. The new high tech machine encouraged passing shoppers to demonstrate their break dance moves and rewarded the best efforts with free Cokes.As shoppers stroll through the mall, they are quickly challenged by the machine to emulate the dance moves of South Korea’s ultra popular boy band, 2 PM. When a brave soul accepts the invitation, they are instructed to step on the bright red circle painted on the floor, and the magical machine begins the fun. . . Some of the less technology friendly members of the audience might think there was a person hidden inside the double sized vending machine, but in reality, the crowd friendly soda dispenser makes use of Microsoft’s Kinect technology. Sensors read the dancers body moves and when they copy the dance step correctly, out pops a bottle of Coke. • #9: Developers paying attention to the business end of things more than ever beforeWith good reason … lots of devices out there, and you need to pick the ones that matterUpdates – 90+ days since GAEarlier in January, we shared that Windows 8 had sold over 60 million licenses. In our earnings announcement on Jan 24, we posted revenue of $5.88B. That included $783M of revenue from Windows 8 pre-sales. We also shared we were seeing a YOY gain compared to the same quarter last year of 24%; after adjusting for the Upgrade Offer deferral of revenue it’s still up 11%. During the three months ended December 31, 2012, we recognized a net $622 million of revenue related to the Windows Deferral, We expect to recognize $1.1B of the deferred revenue. Non OEM revenue grew more than 40% due to upgrades, Surface sales and volume licensing – outperforming the X86 PC market. Commercial sales outpaced consumer sales due to constraints on touch devices in the market. The question you might ask is how does that compare? To put things into perspective:Over 60 million licenses sold matches the record setting pace we saw for Windows 7 when it first released. We have almost doubled the number of Windows 8 certified systems since GA at the end of October. This includes laptops with touch, ultramobiles, all in ones, RT tablets, convertibles and more. There are more than 1800 certified systems for Windows 8 and Windows RT.
• #10: Another way of evaluating impact is the work going on with developers, and we’ve seen strong growth in developers building for Windows 8: GA marked the global grand opening of the Windows Store worldwide. Since then, we’ve seen great strides in the number of apps available – since GA the number of apps has more than quadrupled (4x)In fact, the majority of the top apps are in the Store or in the pipeline now. Of course there may be this or that app that isn't in the Store yet, but we are engaged with the right App Builders.Some examples of some new apps that just came into the Store recently include:CNNAudibleComparing top apps, our app catalog is growing significantly faster than the iPad catalog grew when that product was released. Developers are taking advantage of our unique business model opportunities –being able to use their own commerce engines and keep up to 100% of their profits for in app sales. App builders who are taking advantage of this include: Amazon, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Zinio, and Magzster. PayPal also announced plans to release an SDK so that developers could use their service for in app purchases as well.         App downloads: We passed the 100M app download mark – just two months after GA. In the first two months of the iPad launch they were at the 35M download mark.A number of developers have hit the one million, two million, and even three million dollar mark in terms of app downloads.Our industry leading business terms once an app reaches $25K has already allowed app makers like Rovio, Halfbrick Studios, and Artifex Mundi to make more off of every Windows Store app download than they were making on iOS or Android. Others who have passed the $25K mark include Cut the Rope (Zeptolabs) and MS Studios (for some Xbox gaming titles).We have seen double digit growth in people visiting the Windows Store week over week since October. In December alone, we saw nearly 200 people going to the Windows Store per minute. On Christmas Day alone, we saw the number of unique new users visiting the Store increase 267% compared to the norm in December.App downloads on Christmas Day likewise increased by more than 150%.That’s more than any other platform saw in terms of app download increases from the holiday. (iPad was 140%; App downloads for iOS in general averaged an 87% increase on that day)

• #14: One of the cornerstones of this new experience of Windows is touch. We believe touch is the future. Over time all devices will be touch. Touch is the future and Windows 8 delivers. Touch will be everywhere – it’s just a matter of time before all devices will be touch.Windows 8 delivers an immersive touch experience…from tablets to all in ones to even laptops…touch is fast becoming a must-have. Customers want touch.Demand is high. In fact, demand far outpaced supply in the last few months of 2012 but we’ve been working with our partners and across the entire supple chain to address this. Together, we’ve made progress and the trajectory of touch devices continues to grow. However, this wont happen overnight and will take a number of selling seasons to resolve completely. That said, our partners are on board and are dramatically increasing the touch assortment they offer. Our own telemetry data is clear evidence that customers with a touch device do more. With a touch device:Customers use SEARCH two times more oftenCustomers use SHARE 2.5x more oftenCustomers snap apps to multitask 2.5 more often Customers spend 4.5x more times in Windows Store apps on a touch device

Fast on IE but slow fps on other browsers; decided to convert that code to native apis of HTML5 <canvas>. After that optimization, the game felt “too fast” to Zepto and they slowed it down. Basically there is a drawing loop for all animations that loop every 16ms; in IE9+, we are consuming only 4-6ms for loop (to execute JS and display on screen) and we stay on hold other 10ms or skip some drawing loop in order to make game slower. If we wanted, we could go faster and more complex. Denis agreed in the past to say he was the developer at Zepto that told us “slow it down, it’s too fast [compared to other platforms]”. Tools: they optimized JS performance using JavaScript Profiler of IE9 (awesome to detect slow code path!). They developed using Visual studio and smart JS intellisense. • #16: Enterprise customers from around the world are adopting Windows 8 in key scenarios, and finding ways to improve experiences for employees and customers. Windows 8 innovations offer customers immediate business benefits, while high compatibility with Windows 7 allows them to adopt Windows 8 devices side by side with Windows 7 and integrate them into customers’ existing management infrastructure. Some early adopters include …  British Telecom, who was looking for a way for their field-based engineers to pick up and update job information securely while on the go. They have now deployed about 5,000 Windows 8 devices to their field, and said they have seen an immediate productivity boost. Seton Hall University is standardizing on Windows to help reduce its IT support and reduce ongoing maintenance costs, while also providing comprehensive security, reliability and management across thousands of devices. Seton Hall has deployed 1,600 Windows 8 seats on Samsung Series 7 tablet and Series 5 laptops to incoming freshman, juniors and their faculty. And several companies have shared how they’re building new Windows apps to improve experiences for employees, customers and consumers.PCL Construction, a major construction company in North America and Australia, developed a Windows 8 line-of-business app called the Safety Management Center that allows its field staff to record observations while on the construction site and simultaneously fill out inspection forms remotely — helping employees address potential incidents on the job site before they occur. More importantly, Safety Management Center is helping PCL deliver on its ongoing goal of zero safety incidents.Toyota Racing Developmentworked with us to design anapp that serves as the centerpiece of their strategy to improve car performance to ultimately win races. TRDs Trackside app, running on Windows 8-powered tablets, helps them deliver efficient trackside information exchanges at the track and improves the speed and accuracy of communications between the race car driver and racing team crew chief. Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, one of the largest dealers of television and film worldwide, needed a simple, yet effective method for broadcasters to securely screen its products and download their marketing assets on the go – a new Windows 8 app by Fox provided that solution.Emirates airline developed an in-flight app that allows airline pursers and crew to provide exceptional service to customers in flight  with light  and sleek HP  tablet that is fully integrated with Emirates’ IT  environment. And Bank of America and Johnson & Johnson are two great examples of businesses developing Windows Store apps to reach consumers.The United States Department of Defense recently announced a $617M contract for the Army, the Navy and the Defense Information Systems Agency to run a host of the latest Microsoft products including Windows 8.So as you can see from these examples, there is a wide variety of uses for Windows 8 and new apps and our enterprise customers are taking advantage of all of them.

• #18: Since we launched in November last year, the progress and the momentum around the product has been very promising. So where has this got us? We’re in the game. What does that mean, well these great stats tell you exactly. 3x more consumers walk into retail asking for Windows Phone4x as many RSPs recommend Windows Phone. 2x as many RSPs carry a Windows Phone – this is huge. 4 out of 5 RSPs say that Windows Phone has upward Brand Momentum. We have overtaken BlackBerry in 26 Major Markets. We have higher share than APPLE in 7 markets. We have higher than 10% share in 4 markets. And in terms of sales we are selling 4X as many Windows Phones as last year. Incredible achievement.

• #20: Developers are pretty vocal about what they need to build great apps. Well, we heard you – and the phone team delivered it in Windows Phone 8
• #21: You asked us to make it easier to build fast and fluid UI. We delivered by adding new controls and improving the performance of some of the most important controls. Now when you use things lists and grids and panoramas, your apps will be noticeably faster.
• #22: You asked for the ability to do more with Live Tiles. We delivered, and the platform gives you live tiles in three sizes. Beyond that, you will be able to show notifications on the lock screen and even to update the phone’s wallpaper.
• #23: You asked for better speech integration. We delivered with a full-featured speech platform. It is now possible not only to launch your apps using speech commands but you can have full conversations with your apps.
• #24: You asked us to improve our Dev Center and StoreWe delivered and our new Dev Center makes you more efficient and our Store makes you more money.
• #25: You asked for deeper integration with the phone experiencesWe delivered. We’ve opened up our camera to allow you to create integrated lens apps.
• #26: You asked us to improve multitasking.We delivered, and you can now write apps that will track location in the background, as well as video chatting apps like Skype.
• #27: You asked for richer and more advanced networking support. We’ve heard your requests for Bluetooth data transfer, peer networking using Wifi or Bluetooth, and proximity connections using NFC. Our response is done, done, and done.
