THE BRANCHES OF
PHILOSOPHY
 Is really an extension of a
fundamental and necessary drive
in every human to know what is
real
A. Metaphysics
First the question, Where am I? By the time
we reached adulthood we believe
we know the answer to this question. In fact
we believed that the answer is obvious
that we don’t bother to look closely at the
question itself. Where am I? Well let’s say
I’m in Manila. You don’t need philosophy to
answer that one. But if you ask a
series of where questions (Where is Manila?
Where is the Philippines? etc.) which at
first seems childish you eventually end up with
the universe.
What kind of place is the universe? Is
it governed by laws? If so what laws?
The study of the universe as a whole
is the province of metaphysics.
 How do we tell good from evil or right from
wrong?
 Is a branch of philosophy that explores the
nature of moral virtue and evaluates human
actions.
 Generally it is the study of moral judgements
VIRTUE(morally good behavior/character)
MORAL (concerning/relating to what is right
and wrong in human behavior)
B. Ethics
What then is ethics or morality?
According to Ayn Rand ethics or morality
is a branch of philosophy that provides a
human being with a “code of values to
guide man’s choices and actions -
SOCRATES
 “to be happy, a person has to live a
virtuous life”.
 Virtue is not something to be taught
or acquired through education, but
rather, it is merely an awakening of
the seeds of good deeds that lay in
the mind and heart of a person
PHILOSOPHER
 Deals with nature, sources,
limitations and validity of knowledge
 defined as the “branch of philosophy that
studies the nature and means of human
knowledge.” We need epistemology to
guide us in knowing since we make
mistakes from time to time.
C. Epistemology
 Comes from the greek word “logike”
and was coined by ZENO
 Reasoning is the concern of the
logician.
 This could be reasoning in science
and medicine, in ethics and law, in
politics, in sports and games and in
affairs of everyday living
D. Logic
 is the science of the beautiful in its various
manifestations including sublime, comic,
pathetic and ugly
 aesthetics studies the nature of art. It is concerned with
the nature and the objective judgement of beauty
 SUBLIME ( amazing, fabulous) very beautiful
 COMIC (funny)
 PATHETIC (causing feelings of sadness)
E. Aesthetics
1. It values our knowledge
2. It helps us to live more
deeply and richly
3. It bring us in touch with our
culture
