The DataTank: an Open Data adapter with semantic output

Presentation for the CNI (Coalition for Networked Information) Fall Forum, December 2012. Describes Emory University Library’s first-hand experience in interlinking Civil War-related materials and other online resources by leveraging open linked data principles. The library has been actively evaluating linked data’s potential to replace current library processes and services (bibliographic services, finding aids, cataloging, and metadata work) as a more efficient and sustainable means, and one that could bring greater benefit to end users for research and learning. The Library’s initial focus was on workforce education and hands-on learning through real-time experiments: the Connections project was begun to prepare staff to work with linked data, a process that has culminated in a 3-month hands-on pilot to build and convert some data. The pilot introduced the concept to a wide range of staff, including subject liaisons, archivists, metadata librarians, and programmers. Emory’s “silos” of data were interlinked with other open data sources as a way to enhance user discovery and use of library materials on a very limited scale.

Meemoo manages a large quantity of mainly audiovisual material from more than 170 partners in cultural heritage and media. More than 6 million objects are currently stored, ranging from digitised newspapers, photos, videos, and audio. In addition, a number of access platforms make the digitised content available to specific target groups, including teachers, students, professional re-users, or the public. Metadata is a key element in all of meemoo’s processes. An important part of our activities is to collect, integrate, manage, and search a large variety of heterogeneous metadata across the archived content. The scale of this has increased enormously, so a good and integrated approach is needed to deal with the amount of metadata, its need for flexibility, and how easy it is to find. One of the specific challenges is modelling and storing data from machine learning algorithms (speech recognition, face detection and entity recognition) for reuse. In this talk, we will discuss the key points and lessons learned from implementing the new metadata roadmap at Meemoo, which is focused on a Knowledge Graph-based infrastructure. The goal of the roadmap is to establish a better data practice within the organization and offer application-independent, uniform access to (meta)data that is spread across various systems and formats.

Workflow composition is a crucial part of day-to-day automation, where many different parameters and facts need to be taken into account. In order to reach a given goal, a planner calculates the sequence of actions that need to be taken in the current context. Semantic technologies such as RDF annotation and reasoning can help improve this process by enabling more generic implementations, connect to more knowledge, an introduce more flexibility. However, it is currently difficult to express change in first order logic, semantic reasoning, and the proofs they produce. What if a change in the context invalidates the current plan? In this talk, I will introduce smart workflow composition method based on Weighted Transition Logic and implemented in Notation3 logic—a superset of RDF. Actions are described as changes to the RDF state, resulting in a more adaptive and change aware workflow composition process. After a basic introduction of the general concepts, I will discuss several applications in the healthcare, public services or transport domain.

It’s 2025. Internet of things has taken of, and both machines have joined humans on the Web and in society. What do they do, how do we cope, and more importantly, how did we end up here? User experience has a major peak in importance: digital devices are everywhere, users are utterly diverse, and technology is getting highly advanced. Inventing better ways to let people interact with such technology has been the challenge of the 21st century. UX expectations are through the roof: children grow up as digital natives and think any thing is science. However, that is not all. The user spectrum has some new participants: machines. The rise of digital assistants introduce new challenges about how to deal with these newcomers. But how are we handling the next-gen AI-driven machine players, as they are the real digital natives. In this talk, we go over interesting use cases, positions and developments on AI. Furthermore, we touch on some technical and ethical fallacies in existing systems such as IBM Watson or self-driving cars. Finally, we illustrate future prospects and raise some challenging ethical questions.

Time travelling through DBpediaMiel Vander Sande

Data on the World Wide Web changes at the speed of light—today’s facts are tomorrow’s history. This makes the ability to look back important: how do facts grow and change over time? It gets even more interesting when we zoom out beyond individual facts: how do answers to questions evolve when data ages? With Linked Data, we are used to query the latest version of information, because updating a sparql endpoint is easier than maintaining every historical version. With the lightweight Triple Pattern Fragments interface, it becomes very easy for a server to host multiple versions. Using the Memento framework to switch between versions based on a timestamp, your browser can evaluate sparql queries over any point in time. We tried this with dbpedia—and so can you!

Opportunistic Linked Data Querying through Approximate Membership MetadataMiel Vander Sande

Between uri dereferencing and the sparql protocol lies a largely unexplored axis of possible interfaces to Linked Data, eachwith its own combination of trade-offs. One of these interfaces is Triple Pattern Fragments, which allows clients to execute sparql queries against low-cost servers, at the cost of higher bandwidth. Increasing a client’s efficiency means lowering the number of requests, which can among others be achieved through additional metadata in responses. We noted that typical sparql query evaluations against Triple Pattern Fragments require a significant portion of membership subqueries, which check the presence of a specific triple, rather than a variable pattern. This paper studies the impact of providing approximate membership functions, i.e., Bloom filters and Golombcoded sets, as extra metadata. In addition to reducing http requests, such functions allow to achieve full result recall earlier when temporarily allowing lower precision. Half of the tested queries from aWatDiv benchmark test set could be executed with up to a third fewer http requests with only marginally higher server cost. Query times, however, did not improve, likely due to slower metadata generation and transfer. This indicates that approximate membership functions can partly improve the client-side query process with minimal impact on the server and its interface.

Publish data as Time Consistent Web API based on Provenance (WS-REST 2014)Miel Vander Sande
