The Legal Services Authority Act of 1987 established the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to provide free legal services to weaker sections of Indian society and organize Lok Adalats for dispute resolution. NALSA is constituted by the Chief Justice of India, a Supreme Court justice, and other members. The Act also establishes State Legal Services Authorities, High Court Legal Services Committees, District Legal Services Authorities, and Taluk Legal Services Committees to facilitate free legal aid services nationwide, especially for Scheduled Castes, women, children, disabled people, and those below certain income thresholds.
