The Right Tools for IoT Developers – Dan Gross @ Eclipse IoT Day ThingMonk 2016

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Thingful is a website that tracks IoT devices globally. The different colors represent things for Environment, Transportation, Home, and Flora and Fauna. Ocean dots are everything from weather stations to buoys to barges. There are even hammerhead sharks and sea turtles being tracked. So, even animals can be things.
  • #4: But building solutions for IoT are not easy. We are dealing with new and highly specialized skill sets. Knowledge of new connectivity protocols, radios and the ability to manage power, performance and size tradeoffs for embedded devices which may operate remotely or underground With IoT, Things must talk to each other, even though they were never designed to work together. Legacy devices must work with new controllers. And lets not forget, the really big issue that is hanging over IoT, When you are running factories and power plants, security failures are not an option. I will talk about this in more detail
  • #5: Topology for IoT can have n number of edge nodes and gateways
  • #6: Based on our research… Assuming that you have the right internal resources, it takes approximately 2 years to develop a reliable product for IoT. In that time, 10% of the companies will drop from the S&P listing, to be replaced by innovative new companies…. Hopefully, that won’t be you.
  • #7: That is why we have been working hard to develop and launch ARTIK An end to end platform for IoT – for developers, makers and manufacturers   The ARTIK Platform includes: Hardware, Software, Operational System, Cloud, End-to-end security, Developer Tools, and an ever-growing Ecosystem It is the first end to end enablement platform for the IOT market with ease of implementation and frictionless pairing
  • #8: ARTIK can reduce Time to Productize from 24 months to as little as 6-9 months with smaller, less specialized teams and much smaller investments. We currently experience this while working with our customers – they give us positive feedback So, you can concentrate your internal resources on doing what you do best – adding value to your business and your customers
  • #9: Samsung is the 2nd largest Semiconductor manufacturer in the world ….. Samsung ships roughly 2 million products per day Investment – Samsung will commit $1.2 Billion in US-centered investments and R&D around the Internet of Things (IoT) over the next 4 years; (to be led by Samsung’s Strategy and Innovation Center, Global Innovation Center, and Samsung Research America (all based in the US))
  • #10: Let’s briefly talk about the hardware.   We bring together an entire system-onto-module, ...including an application processor, memory, DRAM and flash – and the required connectivity radios  Because of the broad needs for IoT, ...we brought out three different packages. From the very small ARTIK 1 which is ideal for end nodes, ...to the octo-core, ARTIK 10, using Samsung’s powerful Exynos processor, 16GB of flash memory, 2 GB of DRAM, plus on-module support for camera input and displays. It integrates Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and ZigBee radios all in the size of an SD memory card. (HOLD UP CARD)   Getting all of this capability into such a small form factor takes incredible engineering. # And, I can promise you, this is only the beginning ….. We will continue to release new versions of ARTIK Modules that meet your requirements in terms of size, cost and processing power ….
  • #11: Building blocks for IoT Samsung cannot do it alone Familiar technologies
  • #12: A Boeing 787 Dreamliner generates ½ terabyte (500 gigabytes) of data per flight.
  • #21: .
  • #26: Even more features
  • #27: Security – we take this very serious ARTIK provides end-end security With hardware embedded secure element, and certificates issued by a trusted certificate authority Secure Device Registration, apps and user interactions Open Internet standards based authentication and authorization Data Encryption and Privacy Management including Built-in identity and permissions management These are developments that take time, resources and money to create value for YOU – the users of IOT and creators of new business models You want data security for the success of your company and for your customers
  • #29: This is just the beginning.
