Early Church Fathers on Baptism
FIRST 200 YEARS

Col 2:9-15
9 For in Christ all the fullness of the
Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and you have
been given fullness in Christ, who is the
head over every power and authority.
11 In him you were also circumcised, in the
putting off of the sinful nature, not with
a circumcision done by the hands of men but
with the circumcision done by Christ, 12
having been buried with him in baptism and
raised with him through your faith in the
power of God, who raised him from the dead.
13 When you were dead in your sins and in
the uncircumcision of your sinful nature,
God made you alive with Christ. He forgave
us all our sins, 14 having canceled the
written code, with its regulations, that
was against us and that stood opposed to
us; he took it away, nailing it to the
cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers
and authorities, he made a public spectacle
of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
 Baptism is likened to
Circumcision.
 Circumcision is removal of the
foreskin.
 It’s the sign of the covenant
between God and Abraham. – Gen.
17:11
 Circumcision is what makes one a
Jew.
 Non Jews are called
“Uncircumcised”. – Eph. 2:11
 The circumcision in Baptism is
done by God.
 Baptismal Circumcision happens
during our “burial” in Baptism

1 Peter 3:18-22
18 For Christ died for sins once for
all, the righteous for the
unrighteous, to bring you to God. He
was put to death in the body but
made alive by the Spirit, 19 through
whom also he went and preached to
the spirits in prison 20 who
disobeyed long ago when God waited
patiently in the days of Noah while
the ark was being built. In it only
a few people, eight in all, were
saved through water, 21 and this
water symbolizes baptism that now
saves you also — not the removal of
dirt from the body but the pledge of
a good conscience toward God. It
saves you by the resurrection of
Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into
heaven and is at God's right hand —
with angels, authorities and powers
 Baptism is compared to the Flood
waters of Genesis.
 Noah and his family were saved
through Water.
 The flood water symbolizes
Baptism, not the other way round.
 Circumcision is what makes one a
Jew.
 We are saved at Baptism.
 Baptism is not the removal of
dirt from the body (Bath)
 We pledge a good conscience at
Baptism.
 Baptism has no effect if Christ
didn’t resurrect from the dead.

1 Cor 15:29-32
29 Now if there is no resurrection,
what will those do who are baptized
for the dead? If the dead are not
raised at all, why are people
baptized for them?
30 And as for us, why do we endanger
ourselves every hour? 31 I die every
day — I mean that, brothers — just
as surely as I glory over you in
Christ Jesus our Lord.
32 If I fought wild beasts in
Ephesus for merely human reasons,
what have I gained? If the dead are
not raised,
"Let us eat and drink,
for tomorrow we die."

 Baptism is Linked with the
Resurrection of the Saints.
 Because of the link to the
Resurrection, a heretical
doctrine of “baptism by proxy”
developed in the Corinthian
church.
 The Mormon Church (Latter Day
Saints) practice proxy baptism.
 Note: Heresies usually develop
around the essentials.
 Question: Why would such heresy
develop if there was not strong
emphasis on baptism and the
Resurrection of the dead?
1 Cor 15:16-19
16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has
not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been
raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your
sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in

us who were baptized into Christ

 In Baptism, We are able to
Participate in THREE Events
predicted about Jesus’ Mission.
 Baptism is INTO Christ. This is how
we Enter.
 Baptism is Participating in Jesus’
DEATH.
BURIAL.
RESURRECTION.
 We’re RAISED in Baptism to live a
NEW Life.
 New Life Begins after Baptism, not
Before.
 It is linked with the final
Resurrection.

1 Cor 10:1-5
1 For I do not want you to be
ignorant of the fact,
brothers, that our forefathers
were all under the cloud and
that they all passed through
the sea.
2 They were all baptized into
Moses in the cloud and in the
sea.
3 They all ate the same
spiritual food 4 and drank the
same spiritual drink; for they
drank from the spiritual rock
that accompanied them, and
 The redemption of Israel from
Egypt was not complete until
they had Crossed the Red Sea.
 Moses was a type of Messiah.
 They were Baptised into Moses.
 They Became obedient to Moses.
 We can see similarities
between Israel’s Salvation and
their journey of faith with
that of the Christian.

2 Kings 5:1-14
Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great
man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him
the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had
leprosy.
2 Now bands from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from
Israel, and she served Naaman's wife. 3 She said to her mistress, "If only
my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of
his leprosy."
4 Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had
said. 5 "By all means, go," the king of Aram replied. "I will send a
letter to the king of Israel." So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents
of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten sets of clothing. 6 The
letter that he took to the king of Israel read: "With this letter I am
sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy."
7 As soon as the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his robes and
said, "Am I God? Can I kill and bring back to life? Why does this fellow
send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to
pick a quarrel with me!"

8 When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his
robes, he sent him this message: "Why have you torn your robes? Have the
man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel." 9 So
Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of
Elisha's house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, "Go, wash
yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and
you will be cleansed."
11 But Naaman went away angry and said, "I thought that he would surely
come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave
his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12 Are not Abana and
Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel?
Couldn't I wash in them and be cleansed?" So he turned and went off in a
rage.
13 Naaman's servants went to him and said, "My father, if the prophet had
told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much
more, then, when he tells you, 'Wash and be cleansed'!" 14 So he went down
and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told
him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.
