In 2020, life expectancy in the US decreased by 1.87 years, over eight times the average decrease in peer high-income countries, widening the gap in life expectancy to 4.69 years. Disproportionate declines were seen among Hispanic and Black populations, with life expectancy reductions of 3.88 and 3.25 years respectively, reversing previous progress in racial equity. The findings indicate a significant health disadvantage in the US exacerbated by systemic issues and policies, leading to pronounced mortality impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic.
