- 2. Common Mistakes I have seen the words they’re, their, and there misused many times but they are easily confused, especially when typing or writing in a hurry. Hopefully, if you’ve had trouble remembering which is which, you will have no troubles after the presentation is over. The words are not interchangeable even though they are pronounced the same way.
- 3. They’re They’re is short for “they are” Never use the word “they’re” in formal letters, it should always be expanded to “they are” If you cannot replace “they’re” with “they are” in the sentence, don’t use it!
- 4. They’re Examples Mom and dad’s flight has been delayed so they’re stuck at the airport overnight. The company is doing so well that they’re thinking of buying a new building. Wrong- They’re bags are red. Put that bag over they’re.
- 5. Their Their is used to show possession, a good way to remember the usage and spelling is to pick out the word ‘heir’ which put simply means a person who inherits something. In most cases you can replace “their” with “our” in a sentence, and if it still makes sense then, “their” is probably correct.
- 6. Their Examples Their family room is enormous! Their bags are red. Their guests have brought gifts. Wrong- Their doing a good job in school. The money is over their.
- 7. There There represents a place (specified or unspecified) or that something exists. You can easily remember to use “there” by remembering the word “here.” You can often interchange the two words and if the sentence makes sense, then “there” is almost always correct.
- 8. There Examples There is something you don’t see everyday. Put the cup over there please. The hat goes right there on your head. Wrong- There having all kinds of fun in the pool. The bowls in there kitchen are orange.
- 9. Combination They’re putting their coats over there on the coat rack. There must have been a reason they’re taking their computer back. There are two of their books on the table.
