THOR Tech Update
• Partner integrations
• Work Identifier Types
• Event Data
• Auto Update
Partner Integrations
• CERN - High Energy Physics
• Integration into a complex ecosystem of services, including linking
Inspire author profiles and HEPData
• PANGAEA - Earth sciences
• Showcases a “non-member” approach to ORCID integration, based on
Datacite Auto Update
• EBI / EMBL - Life sciences
• Created an ORCID middleware hub to ease integration in their multi-
database and value added service environment
• Full details on the THOR blog
ORCID Work Identifier types
• ORCID supports over 30 work types
• But they were inconsistently referenced
in our API and schema
• …and what if yours is not on the list?
• We rationalized external identifiers in our v2.0 API, making it easier for
developers to understand
• And added the ability for members to request new work types!
• Protein Data Bank (PDB) identifiers requested by EBI coming soon
Event Data
• Datacite have started to integrate Event Data
• Collaborating with Crossref, OpenAire, Pangaea, Elsevier and others in
the Scholix framework
• Examples of events include references to related data, data citations in
journal articles, and new versions of a work
• Includes Claiming by and ORCID record via Datacite search and link,
enabling datacentres to see who is claiming their research objects
• £ million links and counting!
• Available through their existing Search and APIs
10
ORCID Auto-Update
• Whenever a publication or a
dataset receives a DOI and its
metadata contains ORCID iDs, the
ORCID record of the author(s) can
be updated automatically.
• Authors receive a notification in
their ORCID inbox.
• They can configure to accept
updates automatically in future.

THOR Future
Where next for THOR?
THOR runs until November 30 2017
In the next 13 months we have plans for:
• Communications activities
• More PID integrations
• R&D for ‘missing PIDs’
We will also be running a major research
project on PID adoption across disciplines
and borders, and exploring ways to
enhance the sustainability of PID
providers and services
Communications activities
We have a huge array of communications activities coming
up in the last few months of 2016 and throughout 2017:
• Three bootcamps
• A workshop on data publishing workflows
• Disciplinary workshops (Humanities and Social Sciences,
Physics, Geoscience, Biomedical)
• Focus groups
• Project events
As well as conference presentations,
webinars, workshops at other events
PIDapalooza and more!
More PID integrations
We will build on the work we’ve already done to integrate
PIDs into production services:
• EBI will integrate ORCID IDs into many more
databases, and push more identifiers to ORCID
records
• We are working with Open Access platforms in the
humanities to integrate and promote ORCID IDs
• The CERN Analysis and Preservation platform is
being rolled out with PIDs baked in
We will also extend cross-linking of identifier
systems (tackling versioning, claiming,
creating links) and improve Data Citation
‘Missing PIDs’
We are building on our initial work on Organisation Identifiers
and we will be publishing two documents (one on the current
state of ORG ID provision, and another on governance
models for a community-backed ORG ID initiative) in the
coming months
We will be publishing white papers to start
seeking a community-led solution to the
challenges of Project IDs and Grant IDs –
these are key gaps in the PID landscape
that need to be filled if we want to link
‘people, places and things’
