In this workshop we will present an overview of the current state of the art of leveraging open source tools to build a novel intrusion detection system inside the enterprise. In this new landscape, sharing threat intelligence has become a key component to mitigate cyber-attacks.
In this session we will define what Threat Intelligence is and discuss how to collect and integrate threat intelligence from public sources. In addition, we’ll demonstrate how to build your own Threat Intelligence data using Open Source tools such as sandboxes, honeypots, sinkholes and other publicly available tools.
The industry’s reticence to share information about attack vectors gives the adversary a huge advantage. Using Threat Intelligence we can reduce this advantage and enable preventative response. We will guide you through the different standards (OpenIOC, STIX, MAEC, OTX, IODEF…) to describe and share cyber intelligence, as well as Open Source Frameworks such as CIF (Collective Intelligence Framework) that allows you to combine different threat sources.
One of the biggest problems with Threat Intelligence is finding out how to take advantage of the data you have to actually improve the detection/prevention capabilities in your environment. We will describe how to leverage Threat Intelligence to detect threats and provide defenses, and we will focus on how to use Open Source Tools (Suricata, OSSIM, OSSEC, Bro, Yara…) to get the most of your Threat Intelligence.

Alessio Bosca: Linked Data for Content Analytics in CELImbruemmer Alessio Bosca (CELI) presented how CELI is exploiting linked data. Their focus is on speech applications, semantic search, text analytics, opinion mining and social media intelligence. The core technology used encompasses language processes such as language identification, morphological analyses and semantic analysis. CELI exploits the linked data in the LOD cloud a) as a user by making use of for NER, and b) as a provider for internal use and for crafting RDF artifacts. Two projects were addressed: a book project for the digital humanities and the Homer project for multilingual interfaces to assessing data from different public administration. From the work with linked open data the the LOD cloud community is advised to put more emphasis on truly linking of the datasets. With regard to the public sectors it is suggested that more data should be published as linked open data and that international standards should be used. The issue of publishing companies’ linked data under an open license was also addressed. The speaker made the point that besides the resistance to sharing, because of valid competitive concerns, company data is generally over-fitted to their solutions and clients. In other words, companies need to be able to manage ‘micro-domains’ which are regarded as less useful in general. Compromisingly it was suggested by the audience that companies should not answer the question why they do not publish their linked data, but what they could publish.

Alessio Bosca: Linked Data for Content Analytics in CELI
Alessio Bosca: Linked Data for Content Analytics in CELImbruemmer Alessio Bosca (CELI) presented how CELI is exploiting linked data. Their focus is on speech applications, semantic search, text analytics, opinion mining and social media intelligence. The core technology used encompasses language processes such as language identification, morphological analyses and semantic analysis. CELI exploits the linked data in the LOD cloud a) as a user by making use of for NER, and b) as a provider for internal use and for crafting RDF artifacts. Two projects were addressed: a book project for the digital humanities and the Homer project for multilingual interfaces to assessing data from different public administration. From the work with linked open data the the LOD cloud community is advised to put more emphasis on truly linking of the datasets. With regard to the public sectors it is suggested that more data should be published as linked open data and that international standards should be used. The issue of publishing companies’ linked data under an open license was also addressed. The speaker made the point that besides the resistance to sharing, because of valid competitive concerns, company data is generally over-fitted to their solutions and clients. In other words, companies need to be able to manage ‘micro-domains’ which are regarded as less useful in general. Compromisingly it was suggested by the audience that companies should not answer the question why they do not publish their linked data, but what they could publish.

How community software supports language documentation and data analysisPeter Bouda Field linguists have increasingly adopted the latest technologies and tools for language documentation. Their needs have led to remarkable developments in software and archiving, exemplified by work at the MPI in Nijmegen, which leads the innovation cycles that take place in the digital working environments of field linguists. The next step in research is now the analysis and theoretical exploitation of the huge amount of data that has been collected in numerous language documentation projects that use these environments. This research will also rely on computer-based strategies, as data is instantly available in digital formats.
In this talk I will introduce some of the lesser known tools and software packages for annotation and analysis tasks. Some of these tools were created within DOBES projects and/or as community projects by small teams; they can be combined with well-known tools like ELAN or Toolbox to give researchers access to their data. I will focus on how a combination of simple, special purpose tools makes researchers more productive and how existing software libraries allow scientific projects to create their own, task-specific software tools that they can tailor to their own needs.

Is AI just another technology, or does it fundamentally change the way we live and think?
Every technology has a direct impact with micro-ethical consequences, some good, some bad. However more profound are the ways in which some technologies reshape the very fabric of society with macro-ethical impacts. The invention of the stirrup revolutionised mounted combat, but as a side effect gave rise to the feudal system, which still shapes politics today. The internal combustion engine offers personal freedom and creates pollution, but has also transformed the nature of urban planning and international trade. When we look at AI the micro-ethical issues, such as bias, are most obvious, but the macro-ethical challenges may be greater.
At a micro-ethical level AI has the potential to deepen social, ethnic and gender bias, issues I have warned about since the early 1990s! It is also being used increasingly on the battlefield. However, it also offers amazing opportunities in health and educations, as the recent Nobel prizes for the developers of AlphaFold illustrate. More radically, the need to encode ethics acts as a mirror to surface essential ethical problems and conflicts.
At the macro-ethical level, by the early 2000s digital technology had already begun to undermine sovereignty (e.g. gambling), market economics (through network effects and emergent monopolies), and the very meaning of money. Modern AI is the child of big data, big computation and ultimately big business, intensifying the inherent tendency of digital technology to concentrate power. AI is already unravelling the fundamentals of the social, political and economic world around us, but this is a world that needs radical reimagining to overcome the global environmental and human challenges that confront us. Our challenge is whether to let the threads fall as they may, or to use them to weave a better future.
