1 INTRODUCTION
Desktop virtualization has realized significant growth in the last few years and is poised to grow even
further as more and more organizations prepare to transform their desktop computing and existing

1.1

DIFFERENT DESKTOP USE CASES

Different types of workers across the enterprise have various performance and personalization
requirements. Some require simplicity and standardization, while others need high performance or a fully
personalized desktop. IT administrators can deliver every type of virtual desktop, hosted or local, physical
or virtual—each specifically tailored to meet the performance, security, and flexibility requirements of each
individual user—with NetApp storage and Citrix desktop virtualization products. Table 1 lists these various
user scenarios.

PURPOSE

This technical report provides a step-by-step guide and best practices for deploying hosted shared
®
®
desktops and on-demand applications with Citrix XenDesktop on VMware vSphere using NetApp
storage. This document can be used as a stand-alone example of a XenApp deployment or as an
additional layer in a XenDesktop deployment. The example deployment consists of 51 XenApp servers
using Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS) 5.6 SP1 and NetApp Virtual Storage Console (VSC) 2.1.1. The
first server in the farm will be created using VSC but maintained through traditional methods, according to
Citrix best practices. More information can be found at the Citrix Product Documentation Library under the
Preparing for XenApp 6 Imaging and Provisioning section.
Table 2 provides details regarding the deployment scenario demonstrated in this document.

HIGH-LEVEL ARCHITECTURE AND COMPONENTS

In the following architecture, 51 XenApp servers used streaming application technology with Microsoft
Office 2010 to deliver 2,000 user desktops. The XenApp servers are hosted on VMware vSphere. Figure
1 demonstrates a complete Citrix desktop and application solution; the portions highlighted in green are
the focus of this paper. For more information on deploying Citrix XenDesktop or PVS, see the Citrix

Citrix PVS and NetApp VSC simplify the deployment and maintenance of the Citrix XenApp servers by
providing a replication and deployment methodology where only one server image must be maintained.

This guide does not focus on the scalability of application delivery from XenApp. Instead, this guide
focuses on the methodology needed to deploy the given scenario in a step-by-step approach. The
methodology demonstrated in this guide can be scaled up for larger deployments and down for smaller
deployments. A sizing exercise should be performed for each virtual desktop environment as part of the
planning phase of the overall XenDesktop deployment.
Figure 1 illustrates a high-level overview of the solution after a complete VDI environment is implemented.
Steps highlighted in green are the XenApp server and NetApp storage, the focus of this document.

2 NETAPP SOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS
NetApp provides a scalable, unified storage and data management solution for Citrix XenApp. The unique
benefits of the NetApp solution are:
Storage efficiency. Significant cost savings with multiple levels of storage efficiency for all the VM
data components.
Performance. Enhanced user experience with Virtual Storage Tiering and write I/O optimization that
strongly complements NetApp’s storage efficiency capabilities.
Operational agility. Enhanced solution management with tight partner integration.
Data protection. Enhanced protection of both the virtual desktop OS data and the user data, with
very low overhead for both cost and operations.

2.1

SINGLE SCALABLE UNIFIED ARCHITECTURE

The NetApp Unified Storage Architecture provides customers with an agile and scalable storage platform.
NetApp’s innovative storage solutions provide customers new alternatives and expanded possibilities
®
over traditional storage vendors. All NetApp storage systems use the Data ONTAP operating system to
provide SAN (FCoE, FC, iSCSI), NAS (CIFS, NFS), primary storage, and secondary storage within a
single unified platform so that all virtual desktop data components can be hosted on the same storage
array. A single process for activities such as installation, provisioning, mirroring, backup, and upgrading is
used throughout the entire product line from the entry level to enterprise-class controllers. Having a single
set of software and processes brings great simplicity to even the most complex enterprise data
management challenges. Unifying storage and data management software and processes reduces the
complexity of data ownership, enables companies to adapt to their changing business needs without
interruption, and results in a dramatic reduction in total cost of ownership.
For large, scalable Citrix XenApp environments, the NetApp solution provides the following unique
benefits:

2.2

STORAGE EFFICIENCY
®

Thin provisioning, data deduplication, and FlexClone are the critical components of the NetApp solution
and offer multiple levels of storage efficiency across the solution. This helps customers save on average
50% to 90% on the cost associated with shared storage (based on existing customer deployments and
NetApp solutions lab validation). NetApp is the only storage vendor that offers block-level data
deduplication for live virtual machines without any negative tradeoffs.
THIN PROVISIONING
Thin provisioning is a way of logically presenting more storage to hosts than is physically available. With
thin provisioning, the storage administrator can utilize a pool of physical disks (known as an aggregate)
and create logical volumes for different applications to use without preallocating space to those volumes.
The space gets allocated only when the host needs it. The unused aggregate space is available for the
existing thin-provisioned volumes to expand or for use in creation of new volumes. For more details on
thin provisioning, review NetApp TR-3563: NetApp Thin Provisioning.

NETAPP DEDUPLICATION
NetApp deduplication saves space on primary storage by removing redundant copies of blocks within a
volume hosting XenApp servers. This process is transparent to the application and user and can be
enabled and disabled on the fly. In a Citrix XenApp environment, deduplication provides significant space
savings, given that each VM is an identical copy of the OS, applications, and patches. For more
information on NetApp deduplication, refer to NetApp TR-3505: NetApp Deduplication for FAS,
Deployment and Implementation Guide.
FLEXCLONE
NetApp FlexClone technology involves hardware-assisted rapid creation of space-efficient, writable,
point-in-time images of individual files, LUNs, or flexible volumes. The use of FlexClone technology in
Citrix XenApp deployments provides high levels of scalability and significant cost, space, and time
™
savings. Both file-level cloning and volume-level cloning are tightly integrated with the VMware vCenter
Server using the NetApp Virtual Storage Console (VSC) Provisioning and Cloning vCenter plug-in. The
VSC provides the flexibility to provision and redeploy thousands of VMs rapidly with hundreds of VMs in
each datastore. Note that from a scalability and manageability perspective, this allows for very few
datastores to provision and manage as compared to other solutions, which might require one datastore
per VM.
FlexClone adds a new level of agility and efficiency to storage operations. FlexClone volumes take only
®
seconds to create and are nondisruptive to the parent FlexVol volume or VM. FlexClone copies share
the same physical data space as the source and occupy negligible space (metadata) on the storage
system. FlexClone file-level or volume-level clones use space very efficiently, leveraging the Data ONTAP
architecture to store only data that changes between the source and clone. In addition to all these
benefits, file-level or volume-level FlexClone volumes have the same high performance as other FlexVol
volumes or files hosted on the volumes. Also, FlexClone technology provides significant benefits for
disaster recovery (DR) testing. DR testing with FlexClone is safe, risk free, and can be done during
operational hours at any time. For more information on FlexClone technology concepts, see NetApp TR3347: FlexClone Volumes: A Thorough Introduction.

2.3

PERFORMANCE

Another hurdle to centralized application management is potential performance issues associated with a
large influx of simultaneous I/O as users access applications in a central location. With physical desktops,
this was not a problem because each machine had its own copy of the application along with its own
disks, and I/O was contained within a single desktop. With Citrix XenApp using a shared storage
infrastructure, performance issues might arise during the use of these applications. This essentially
means the solution would require a large number of additional spindles to meet the performance
requirements, resulting in increased overall solution cost.
To solve this problem, the NetApp solution contains Virtual Storage Tiering. Virtual Storage Tiering is a
core component of Data ONTAP and is extended with Flash Cache (formerly PAM II). These solution
components save customers money by:
Requiring far fewer disks and less cache
Not requiring tiers of SSD disks
Serving read data from cache, freeing up disk I/O to perform writes
Providing better throughput and system utilization
Providing faster response times and a better overall end-user experience

VIRTUAL STORAGE TIERING
Virtual Storage Tiering (VST) allows customers to benefit from NetApp’s storage efficiency and at the
same time significantly increase I/O performance. VST is natively built into the Data ONTAP operating
system and works by leveraging block-sharing technologies such as NetApp primary storage
deduplication and file/volume FlexClone to reduce the amount of cache required and eliminate duplicate
disk reads. Only one instance of any duplicate block is read into cache, thus requiring less cache than
traditional storage solutions.
FLASH CACHE
NetApp Flash Cache is a hardware device that extends the native Data ONTAP VST capabilities. Flash
Cache increases the amount of available cache, which helps reduce potential high read latency. For more

FLEXIBLE VOLUMES AND AGGREGATES
Flexible volumes (also known as FlexVol volumes) and aggregates provide pools of storage. This storage
virtualization allows the performance and capacity to be shared by all desktops in the volume or
aggregate. Much like the way that VMware virtualizes computing resources, NetApp virtualizes the
storage resources.

2.4

OPERATIONAL AGILITY

Implementation and management complexities associated with deploying a Citrix XenApp solution are
another potential barrier to centralized application management. The NetApp management solution is
operationally agile and provides tight integration with VMware vCenter for rapidly provisioning, managing,
configuring, redeploying, and backing up XenApp servers created with VSC. This section discusses the
components of the NetApp plug-in framework for vSphere, the Virtual Storage Console.
VIRTUAL STORAGE CONSOLE 2.1.1 (VSC)
The NetApp Virtual Storage Console 2.1.1 (VSC) for VMware vSphere enables administrators to manage
®
™
ESX and ESXi servers connected to NetApp storage systems. VSC is a plug-in to the VMware vCenter
that is available to all vSphere clients that connect to the vCenter server. The core functionality of the
VSC provides VMware administrators the ability to:
Configure best practice HBA/CNA timeout values
Configure MPIO and NFS settings
Monitor storage capacity and deduplication savings
Collect troubleshooting data

PROVISIONING, CLONING, AND REDEPLOYING
The NetApp VSC Provisioning and Cloning plug-in provides customers with the ability to rapidly provision,
manage, import, and reclaim space of thin-provisioned VMs and to redeploy thousands of VMs. Before
cloning virtual machines, VSC checks the template virtual machine to confirm that it is configured
according to NetApp and VMware best practices for VM file system alignment. This plug-in leverages file
and volume FlexClone technologies, discussed earlier, to create hardware-assisted clones. It is tightly
integrated into VMware vCenter as a module of the NetApp VSC 2.1.1. Redeployment of a master
baseline XenApp server offers quick and flexible administration to multiple XenApp servers after patches
and changes have been made to the baseline server. The plug-in also enables VMware administrators to:
Initiate, view, and control deduplication
Configure and provision new datastores for NFS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, and FCoE protocols
Resize existing NFS datastores
Destroy datastores
The provisioning and cloning capability also allows datastore remote replication. This feature gives large
enterprises or companies with multiple locations the ability to easily distribute template virtual machines
®
across environments by using NetApp SnapMirror . With the provisioning and cloning capabilities of VSC
2.1.1, customers are able to achieve the desired storage efficiency, rapid provisioning, and patch
management associated with both dedicated and floating user assignment and persistent and
nonpersistent desktops and still be able to achieve performance acceleration with VST.

3 NETWORK SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
®

For the purposes of this deployment guide, we used a network design with two Cisco Nexus 7000
switches and two Cisco Nexus 5020 switches. Because of the complexity and variety of each
organization’s network environment, providing one general method to set up and configure all networks is
problematic. For more detailed information on additional network configuration options, refer to TR-3749:
NetApp and VMware vSphere Storage Best Practices and TR-3732: Citrix XenServer and NetApp
Storage Best Practices.
The following sections describe the steps used to create the network layout for the NetApp storage
controllers and for each vSphere and XenServer host in the environment.

3.1

NETWORK SETUP OF CISCO NEXUS NETWORK SERIES
®

We followed Cisco best practices to set up the Cisco Nexus environment. For more information on
configuring a Cisco Nexus environment, visit www.cisco.com.
The goal in using a Cisco Nexus environment for networking is to integrate its capabilities to logically
separate public IP traffic from storage IP traffic. Using this method mitigates the chance of issues
developing when changes are made to a portion of the network.
The Cisco Nexus 5020 switches used in this configuration support virtual PortChannels (vPCs), and the
Cisco Nexus 7000 switches are configured with a VDC specifically for storage traffic; therefore, the logical
separation of the storage network from the rest of the network is achieved while providing a high level of

redundancy, fault tolerance, and security. The vPC provides multipathing, which allows for redundancy by
enabling multiple parallel paths between nodes and load balancing traffic where alternate paths exist.
Alternatively, you can use two Cisco Nexus 5020s instead of using two Cisco Nexus 7000s. When you
use this configuration, the vPCs can also be configured for network segmentation using VLANs. This
configuration reduces the network cost significantly but does not allow VDC network segmentation.
Figure 4 shows a 10GbE environment.
Perform the following configuration steps on the Cisco Nexus network:
1. Set up a Peer Keep Alive Link as a management interface between the two Cisco Nexus 7000
switches.
2. Create a separate VDC on the Cisco Nexus 7000 switches for NFS traffic to isolate and secure the
NFS traffic.
3. Assign ports to this VDC and configure these ports for a private, nonroutable VLAN.
Note:

This is an optional configuration. If you do not use this configuration or do not have this option
available, create an additional private, nonroutable VLAN.

4. Perform the following steps for VMware vSphere:
a. On the default VDC on the Cisco Nexus 7000 switches, enable a management VLAN for the
service console; a public VLAN for the virtual machine network; and a private, nonroutable VLAN
®
or VMotion instance.
b. Create virtual PortChannels between the Cisco Nexus 5020 switches for the public VLAN, the
service console VLAN, the NFS VLAN, and the vMotion VLAN.

3.2

STORAGE VLAN FOR NFS

Best Practice
Have at least two physical Ethernet switches for proper network redundancy in your environment.
Carefully plan the network layout for your environment. Develop detailed visual diagrams that include the
connections for each port.
If you use VDCs on the Cisco Nexus 7000s, configure a nonroutable VLAN on a separate VDC for the
NFS storage traffic to pass to and from the NetApp storage controllers to the vSphere hosts. With this
setup, the NFS traffic is kept completely contained, and security is more tightly controlled.

3.3

VIRTUAL MACHINE NETWORK

When creating a VM environment that contains several hundred or several thousand VMs, create a large
enough DHCP scope to cover the number of IP addresses that the client needs. Plan this step before the
implementation.

3.4

NETWORK SETUP OF NETAPP STORAGE CONTROLLER

A virtual network interface (VIF) is a mechanism that supports aggregation of network interfaces into one
logical interface unit. Once created, a VIF is indistinguishable from a physical network interface. VIFs are
used to provide fault tolerance of the network connection and in some cases higher throughput to the
storage device.
Best Practice
The storage controllers should have two or more target ports to provide available redundant paths
between the NetApp storage system and the hypervisor servers.
For optimal performance, maximize the number of Ethernet links for both controllers in the NetApp
active-active controller configuration.
Table 3 contains the steps for setting up the network for both storage controllers.

Configure the cabling for the FAS storage controller (see Figure 4).
For 10GbE connections, make sure that one interface from each of the two dual-port NICs separates
the Cisco Nexus 5020 switches. In total, two connections should go to Cisco Nexus 5020 A and two
should go to Cisco Nexus 5020 B.

Following are the steps to configure the NFS VIF.
1. Connect to the NetApp storage controllers using System Manager.

4 NETAPP STORAGE CONTROLLER SETUP
The following sections cover the NetApp storage controller setup for VMware vSphere 5.

4.1

NETAPP CONTROLLER PHYSICAL CONFIGURATION EXAMPLE

Table 4 shows an example of a NetApp storage configuration for a 2,000-VM deployment with 12 IOPs
per VM along with 51 XenApp server VMs. This number varies according to environment, for different
user types and applications streamed through XenApp. For more details on sizing practices, contact your
NetApp sales engineer and refer to TR-3902: Guidelines for Virtual Desktop Storage Profiling and Sizing.

4.2

ACTIVE-ACTIVE NETAPP CONTROLLER

When you design a shared storage environment for XenApp, the solution must be highly available.
NetApp uses an active-active controller design to provide data availability in business-critical
environments, such as XenApp environments. Active-active controllers provide simple, automatic, and
transparent failover to deliver enterprise-class availability. Providing the highest level of availability of the
shared storage is critical because all servers depend on it. For more information, see NetApp Technical
Report 3450i, “Active/Active Controller Configuration Overview and Best Practice Guidelines.”
Best Practice
Use active-active storage configurations to improve overall system availability by eliminating a single
point of failure.

Figure 5 shows the disk layout for production data on both of the NetApp storage controllers. Aggr0 is
only used for the root file system and is typically three drives. To meet the performance and capacity
needs of this configuration, each controller has one data aggregate (Aggr1 for hosting production VMs)
with the required number of spindles and enough spare disks so that they can be easily added later to the
aggregates to deal with unforeseen situations.

4.3

OVERVIEW OF THE LOGICAL STORAGE CONFIGURATION

Figure 6 shows an example of the logical storage layout for a scalable 2,000-seat VDI configuration along
with 51 XenApp virtual machines, which stream applications to the virtual desktops:
Controller A and B host 1,026 VMs created using NetApp VSC 2.1.1, with a maximum of 250 VMs per
volume.
Controller A and B host 1,025 virtual machines’ write-back cache files. The virtual desktops are
configured with a 2GB write-back cache file per VM and 7GB for each XenApp VM. This configuration
spreads the IOPs to two heads. This NFS volume may be thin-provisioned, and thus NetApp
recommends setting the autogrow options.
The virtual machine swap file (vswap) datastore on storage controller A hosts the virtual machine
swap file for all 2,051 virtual machines. This is done to separate transient data from production data.
Backup and replication of data are beyond the scope of this document.
Controller A hosts infrastructure virtual machines such as domain controllers, DHCP servers, and
XenDesktop. NetApp recommends redundancy for the infrastructure VMs.
Controller A hosts the read-only iSCSI LUN for PVS’s vDisk images.

desktops and the profile files created through XenApp for application streaming.

4.4

STORAGE SIZING FORMULAS

To allocate the proper computing resources for the number of users and types of workloads, some critical
pieces of information should first be gathered. The daily work activities of the most common users should
be looked to as a model when designing a XenApp and XenDesktop environment. Factors such as the
use of resource-intensive applications, log-on and log-off behavior, and work hours must be documented.
Storage sizing has two parts—space and performance.
Best Practice
Desktop workloads vary in different environments. Fully assess your current environment to
successfully plan and design your infrastructure for its next generation. For example, use Liquidware
Lab Stratusphere's comprehensive VDI Fit analyzer and detailed reports to assess your organization's
current network, user, and application usage. Contact a NetApp sales engineer to get a better
understanding of your storage needs.
SPACE CALCULATION
Volumes for hosting the write-back cache:
Storage required per VM * number of VMs per datastore + 5% free space
2 * 250 + 5% = 525GB (VDI)
7 * 25 + 5% / 2 = 92GB (XenApp)
2GB is used in this example for the write-back cache for VDI and 7GB for the XenApp servers, since they
need more resources. Since NFS is thin-provisioned by default, only the space currently used by the
virtual machine is consumed on the NetApp storage. If iSCSI or FCP is used, N * xGB would be
consumed as soon as a new virtual machine is created.
VDISK SIZE ESTIMATES
The size of the vDisk depends greatly on the operating system and the number of applications to be
installed on the vDisk. It is a best practice to create vDisks larger than are initially needed to leave room
for any necessary additional application installations or patches. In this report, both VDI and XenApp
servers use a vDisk of 50GB equaling a total of 100GB.
Each organization should individually determine the space requirements for its vDisk images.
Volume for hosting NetApp VSC-based clones:
(Number of virtual machines in a datastore * storage required by new writes per virtual machine * dedupe
savings) + 5% free space, includes dedupe metadata and some free buffer space in the NetApp
FlexClone volumes
(250 * 5GB * 0.4) + 5% free space = 525GB (VDI)
(26 * 10GB * 0.4) + 5% free space / 2 = 55GB (XenApp)
For these examples, a 40% dedupe savings is used, which is a conservative amount. Certain
assumptions based on commonality of the OS and non-OS data must be examined when figuring an
approximate deduplication percentage. This number varies by environment, and NetApp highly
recommends that a proper sizing be performed to determine storage savings in each environment.
Volume for hosting CIFS user data:
Considering 2GB per user and assuming 30% storage savings with NetApp deduplication and 5% free
space:
2 * 2,000 * 0.7 * 1.05 = 2940GB (VDI)

Space required for the XenApp profiles greatly depends upon what applications will be used. This
information should be examined before beginning an implementation.
Performance calculation:
Flash Cache is used in the calculation of this sizing. Eight IOPS per VM with 80% write and 20% read are
estimated in steady state. It can be varied based on the users’ environment. Contact NetApp partners or
a sales engineer to use the NetApp VDI sizer and get the storage recommendation.

4.5

INTELLIGENT READ CACHING, FLASH CACHE, AND FLEXSCALE

NetApp intelligent caching is available natively in the Data ONTAP 7.3.1 operating system, increasing
overall performance in the environment and decreasing overall storage solution costs.
For a large-scale deployment, Flash Cache can also be used along with intelligent read caching. Flash
Cache is an intelligent read cache that reduces storage latency and increases I/O throughput by
optimizing performance of random read-intensive workloads. As a result, disk performance is increased,
and the amount of storage needed is decreased. Boot storms, log-in storms, and virus scan storms can
all further increase the read-intensive and burst-prone nature of a virtual desktop environment.
FlexScale™ software is the tunable software component of Flash Cache. It is a licensed feature of Data
ONTAP 7.3 or greater. FlexScale allows different caching modes to be used based on the type of
workload. The different modes of caching are metadata only, normal user data, and low-priority blocks.
Perform the steps shown in Table 5 for both storage controllers.

4.6

CONFIGURE AGGREGATE
®

NetApp RAID-DP technology is an advanced RAID technology that provides the default RAID level on all
storage systems. RAID-DP protects against the simultaneous loss of two drives in a single RAID group. It
is very economical to deploy; the overhead with default RAID groups is a mere 12.5%. This level of
resiliency and storage efficiency makes data residing on RAID-DP safer than data residing on RAID 5
while the system is more cost effective than RAID 10.
Best Practice
Use RAID-DP, the NetApp high-performance implementation of RAID 6, for better data protection on all
RAID groups that store virtual disks for the Hyper-V™ VMs. Data aggregates should have a RAID
group size of no less than 12. A NetApp best practice is to create as large an aggregate as possible.
For both storage controllers, perform the following steps.

2. Configure Snapshot copies: Highlight the Xen_Infra volume, right-click, select Snapshot, and click
Configure.

3. Set the Snapshot reserve (%) to 0 and clear the Enable scheduled snapshots option. Click Apply and
then click OK to return to the System Manager main screen.

4.11 CONFIGURE LOCATION OF VIRTUAL SWAP FILE DATASTORE
ESXi servers create a VMkernel swap or vswap file for every running VM. The sizes of these files are
considerable; by default the vswap is equal to the amount of memory configured for each VM. This data is
transient in nature and is not needed to recover a VM from either a backup copy or by using Site
Recovery Manager. For this reason NetApp recommends relocating the VMkernel swap file for every
virtual machine from the VM home directory to a datastore on a separate NetApp volume dedicated to
storing VMkernel swap files. For more information, refer to TR-3749: NetApp and VMware vSphere
Storage Best Practices and vSphere Virtual Machine Administration Guide.

4.12 DEDUPLICATION SETUP
NetApp deduplication saves space on the primary storage by removing redundant copies of blocks within
a volume. This process is transparent to the application and can be enabled and disabled on the fly. In a
Citrix XenApp environment, deduplication provides great value because all of the servers are virtually
identical. For more information, refer to NetApp TR-3505: NetApp Deduplication for FAS, Deployment and
Implementation Guide.
Follow the steps in Table 8 to enable deduplication.

5 CITRIX XENAPP SETUP
5.1

CREATE AND CONFIGURE ACTIVE DIRECTORY FOR XENDESKTOP

The steps regarding XenDesktop are not required to run XenApp, but are necessary for the architecture
in this document since virtualized XenApp servers will be created using the XenDesktop functionality
within Citrix PVS. A key infrastructure component used when registering target devices with the desktop
delivery controller (DDC) is the existing Domain Name System (DNS) environment. When a target VM
begins the registration process, the DDC performs a DNS query and tries to communicate with the target
device using the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the registering machine. The target devices,
which typically obtain their IP addresses through DHCP, must be able to dynamically update their host (A)
records in DNS. NetApp also recommends that the DDCs be able to update their own DNS records
should additional DDCs be brought online, changed, moved, or added to the environment.
®

To create and configure Active Directory for XenDesktop:
1. Create and configure Active Directory on the domain controller VM.
2. Create a DNS server to have both forward and reverse look-up zones.
3. Create a DHCP server and specify a DHCP scope for PVS boot service.
Make sure that the DHCP scope is large enough to accommodate the provisioning and reprovisioning
of desktops and XenApp servers. Scope size can vary from environment to environment, but three
times the number of VMs might be necessary depending on your environment.
Enable option 066 Boot Server Hostname or IP of Provisioning Server.
Enable option 067 Bootfile Name and specify the corresponding value as ARDBP32.BIN.

4. Create an organization unit at the root level to store the desktop delivery controller farm configuration.

CONFIGURE A CITRIX LICENSING SERVER

Install the license server and/or licenses for all Citrix products. The license server must be installed and

INSTALL AND CONFIGURE MICROSOFT SQL SERVER
®

Install SQL Server for the PVS and XenApp databases. This database is a highly critical component and
must be available at all times for serving target devices; it therefore requires proper backup. NetApp
®
recommends using NetApp SnapManager for SQL Server software to back up the database.

5.4

INSTALL ESXI AND VCENTER 5.0

For information on the installation and configuration of vSphere, refer to the vSphere Installation and
Setup Guide published by VMware and TR-3749: NetApp and VMware vSphere Storage Best Practices.

5.5

CREATE A CUSTOMIZATION SPECIFICATION

Create a customization specification for use with deployment of the VMs. The customization specification
creates the information necessary for sysprep to successfully customize a guest OS from the VMware
vCenter Server. It includes information on hostname, network configuration, license information, domain
membership, and other information necessary to customize a guest OS. This procedure can be found in
the vSphere Virtual Machine Administration Guide on page 49. This customization specification can be
used by VSC 2.1.1 to personalize each VM.
Note:

For Windows 2008 R2, the system preparation tools are built into the operating system and do
not have to be downloaded. See Sysprep file locations and versions located on the VMware Web
site for more information and operating systems other than Windows 2008 R2.

Note:

When creating the customization specification, do not use the following characters: &, <, > “, ‘.
VSC 2.1.1 might not successfully customize the new desktops if any of these characters are
used.

INSTALL AND CONFIGURE XENDESKTOP 5

XenDesktop is not required to run XenApp, but is necessary for the architecture in this document since
virtualized XenApp servers will be created using the XenDesktop functionality within Citrix PVS. For
detailed steps on the installation and configuration of XenDesktop 5, see the Citrix Product
Documentation Library and TR-3915: Deployment Guide for Citrix XenDesktop 5 on VMware vSphere
and Citrix XenServer on NetApp Storage, section 5.3.

5.7

INSTALL AND CONFIGURE PROVISIONING SERVICES (PVS)

Although PVS is not required to run XenApp, 25 of the 51 XenApp servers in this document will be
created using PVS for simple management and server administration. This guide does not detail the
storage creation and addition of the vDisk or write cache to a server. For detailed steps on the installation
and configuration of Provisioning Services (PVS), see the Citrix Product Documentation Library and TR3795: Deployment Guide for Citrix XenDesktop 5, Provisioning Services, XenServer, and VMware
vSphere on NetApp Storage.

5.8

INSTALL AND CONFIGURE XENAPP

Citrix XenApp is a feature of XenDesktop; it is the de facto standard for delivering Windows applications.
XenApp delivers applications on demand to both physical and virtual desktops and also determines and
provides the best method of delivery. XenApp offers these three methods for delivering applications to
user devices, servers, and virtual desktops:
Server-side application virtualization. Applications run inside the data center. XenApp presents
each application interface on the user device and relays user actions from the device, such as
keystrokes and mouse actions, back to the application.
Client-side application virtualization. XenApp streams applications on demand to the user device
from the data center and runs the application on the user device.
VM hosted application virtualization. Problematic applications or those requiring specific operating
systems run inside a desktop in the data center. XenApp presents each application interface on the
user device and relays user actions from the device, such as keystrokes and mouse actions, back to
the application.
This paper focuses on the single use case of delivering Microsoft Office 2010 as a server-side
application. For more details regarding the delivery of XenApp applications, see the Citrix Product
Documentation Library.
Complete the following steps to install XenApp. Steps 1 and 2 should be performed before the XenApp
installation.
1. Before installing Citrix XenApp, two Microsoft features must be enabled within Server Manager on the
XenApp server. Navigate to Server Manager and select Add Features. XenApp will not install properly
if these two features have not been installed.

2. Select .NET Framework 3.5.1 Features and Remote Server Administration Tools. Select Next and
follow the onscreen instructions to complete the features’ installation.

3. After the features have been installed, run either the XenApp Server Role Manager or

interface. Reboot the servers and make sure they join the previously created farm.
CREATING XENAPP SERVERS WITH NETAPP VSC
This chapter demonstrates the steps involved in creating 25 XenApp servers utilizing NetApp Virtual
Storage Console (VSC) provisioning and cloning capability. VSC allows XenApp administrators to
leverage the power of NetApp FlexClone (both file and volume) and to redeploy XenApp servers after
patching or software updates. VSC also allows thin provisioning and deduplication management
capabilities directly from the VMware vCenter GUI. VSC utilizes both the NetApp and VMware application
programming interfaces (APIs) to create a robust, fully supported solution. No end-user customization or
scripting is required. This section demonstrates how to properly configure the XenApp server template
and deploy 25 virtual servers from the VMware vCenter interface.
VSC 2.1.1 supports Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 2003, and Windows 2008. More details on
supported operating systems can be found in the NetApp Provisioning and Cloning Administration Guide.
Take the following steps to create 25 XenApp servers using NetApp VSC:

1. Run the Citrix XenApp Server Role Manager on the second XenApp server and select Edit
Configuration.

2. Select Leave the current server farm.

UPDATING XENAPP SERVERS WITH NETAPP VSC
NetApp VSC gives administrators the ability to patch or update the template XenApp server and to
redeploy all other XenApp servers based off the original template. When the XenApp server template is
deployed for the first time, VSC tracks and maintains the relationship between the virtual machines. When
updates are made to the original template, the administrator can redeploy the clones that were originally
created from the baseline.
This model of deployment and redeployment works only when streamed applications are not stored on
the local drives of the cloned XenApp servers, since any data unique to the clone will be lost when the
redeploy is performed.
Follow these steps to redeploy the 25 XenApp servers when a change is needed on the template XenApp
server.
1. Power on the template XenApp server and make the necessary changes, patch updates, and so forth
to the template. Run the Citrix XenApp Server Role Manager and choose to leave the farm. Once the
template has left the farm, run the Server Role Manager and choose to join the farm. After joining,
gracefully shut down the template server and the 25 NetApp XenApp server clones.
2. Log in to vCenter and select the NetApp logo at the home screen. Select the Redeploy option.

3. Select the name of the template XenApp server from which the 25 clones have been produced.

4. Select the clones to redeploy. Clones not selected will not have the updates applied to them.

5. Select to apply new settings, power on, and select the customization specification that will prepare
the new clones.

6. Verify the summary and click Apply to begin the redeployment. When the machines are finished
redeploying and customizing, they will power on with the changes that were made to the XenApp
template.

CREATING XENAPP SERVERS WITH CITRIX PROVISIONING SERVICES (PVS)
This section demonstrates the steps involved in creating 25 XenApp servers utilizing Citrix PVS. The
Provisioning Services infrastructure is based on software-streaming technology. This technology allows
computers to be provisioned and reprovisioned in real time from a single shared-disk image. By using this
technology, administrators can completely eliminate the need to manage and patch individual XenApp

servers. Instead, all server management is done on the master template. The local hard disk drive of
each system may be used for runtime data caching or, in some scenarios, removed from the system
entirely, which reduces power usage, system failure rates, and security risks.
Using Provisioning Services, administrators prepare a device (master target device) to be imaged by
installing an operating system and any required software on that device. A virtual disk (vDisk) image is
then created from the master target device’s hard drive and saved to the network (on Provisioning
Services or a back-end storage device). Once the vDisk is available from the network, a target device no
longer needs its local hard drive to operate, because it boots directly from the network. Provisioning
Services streams the contents of the vDisk to the target device on demand, in real time. The target device
behaves as if it is running from its local drive. Unlike thin-client technology, processing takes place on the
target device.

Product Documentation Library and TR-3795: Deployment Guide for Citrix XenDesktop 5, Provisioning
Services, XenServer, and VMware vSphere on NetApp Storage.
The following steps to create 25 XenApp servers using NetApp VSC should be performed before the PVS
installation.
1. On the second template server, verify that a write-back cache has been created and has been made
available to the template. NetApp recommends using NFS for the write-back cache, since NFS is
thin-provisioned by default; only the space currently used by the virtual machine is consumed on the
NetApp storage. If iSCSI or FCP is used, N x 7GB is consumed as soon as a new virtual machine is
created.
Make sure a vDisk has been created to copy the C: drive of the second template.

2. Run the XenApp Server Role Manager and select Edit Configuration.

vDisk Maintenance with NetApp
A NetApp LUN clone can be used to quickly and easily update and distribute changes made to the vDisk
between provisioning servers.
Use one vDisk LUN as the master image LUN and make the change. After updating, use the following
procedure at the NetApp CLI to clone the master LUN and map the clone to each PVS in the
environment.

After presenting the LUN to PVS, use the same drive letter for the vDisk LUN; it provides high availability
if one PVS fails.
PROFILING AND STREAMING MICROSOFT OFFICE 2010 WITH XENAPP ON NETAPP
In the following section a XenApp profile for Microsoft Office 2010 is created and stored on a NetApp
CIFS share for ease of storage, maintenance, and accessibility. Detailed instructions can be found at
http://support.citrix.com, How to Profile Microsoft Office 2010 for XenApp Application Streaming.
A profile is an application packaged for streaming using the Citrix Streaming Profiler. A profile can contain
a single application or suite of applications. To create profiles, you must install the Streaming Profiler on a
clean, independent computer, which is called the profiler workstation. The profiling wizard records the

installation of applications and the metadata needed to stream the profiled applications. The profiler
bundles files and configuration settings in what becomes the application profile.
The following steps demonstrate how to create a CIFS share to store the application profile and how to
create and publish the profiled application.
1. Follow the steps in section 4.8, Volume Creation, to create a new volume that houses the application
profile.
2. In System Manager, select Shared Folders, right click Shares/Exports, and select Create.
3. Enter the name of the volume to share.

4. Select CIFS and deselect NFS. Give the share a name and a description if desired.

6. Right click the new share and select Edit. Click the Share permissions tab and select the permissions
appropriate for each of the 51 XenApp servers to have access to this share.

product activation using the Office Software Protection Platform (OSPP) and KMS or MAK licenses.
The product activation component included in the kit runs as a local service on either the client or
server computer depending upon where the applications are streamed. Running the licensing

component locally eliminates the need to run the OSPP service in the isolated environment where it

when they log into XenApp and a description if desired.

6 SUMMARY
XenDesktop includes all the on-demand app delivery capabilities of XenApp, which is the central software
component of the Citrix Windows Application Delivery Infrastructure. The goal of XenDesktop is to deliver
on-demand applications to both physical and virtual desktops and to determine and provide the best
method of delivery. Through XenDesktop, XenApp offers three methods for delivering applications to user
devices, servers, and virtual desktops: server-side application virtualization, client-side application
virtualization, and VM-hosted application virtualization.
