MH Across Cultures
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental health in multiple
ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own cultural
communities?
● That it doesn't exist… its just to grab attention
● that medication is toxic and all big pharma
● at times overlooked
● In my opinion people are more open about it but it's still misunderstood
● Just wanting attention
● I personally suffer from PTSD, severe anxiety, severe depression and ADHD.
I have had people who look at me like it's just me wanting attention. I have
been very fortunate to have an amazing counselor and psychiatrist who do
everything they came for me, but I feel like that it’s not the norm
● You just need something to do(usually labor related) and you will get over it
● it's difficult Talking about your struggles openly offend puts you in a
venerable position
● As a hispanic it’s sometimes problematic especially within family because
members have different views and opinions many times based on
generational upbringing
What is Stigma?

● Always negative
● Always untrue
● Can be internalized

How are you feeling after
watching this film?
How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Once you encounter it, it feels like everyone shares that stigma attitude
and it can make it hard to get out there and be yourself
● Held back.
● I think it can be damaging even though its widespread
● possibly lonely
● anxiety inducing
● Sometimes it may feel like everyone notices your struggles and it can
be overwhelming
● It feels like Being there while feeling invisible
● Fear of judgement.
● lack of resources
● not knowing where to turn to for help
● not getting the right help
● stubborn and do not want to seem like I'm helpless
What makes it difficult to reach out for
help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Feeling like a failure, so that fear comes into play again
● I feel like i don't have anybody that cares and feel like my problems are
unsolvable sometimes
● Feeling like help isn't working so they give up
● Sometimes not knowing what's actually wrong is a big struggle as well
because if you reach out for help but can’t really explain what's wrong
it can be difficult for other to know how to help

What did you think?
How did you feel?
● I felt inspired to persevere through my obstacles and find joy in the simple
things
● uplifting but bittersweet
● found it to be positive
● sweet but sad
● Her community of peers trying to understand her struggle
● I use to do dance so this hit home for me
● i also saw peer support
● I felt like the film highlighted internal conflict in a way and that made the
viewers feel somewhat identified and like they could get through what they
might going through similar to the person in the film
● I felt peaceful and saw the collaboration others had with the main
character
●
●
Let’s go deeper…
#Movies4MentalHealth
What are some practices that
help support
your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Counseling
● Reaching out and being vulnerable with trusted friends/family
● Yoga has been very beneficial to my wellbeing
● In the film the power of community is portrayed when it showed her with
other people who were in wheelchairs and enjoyed dance as well so
surrounding ourselves with people who we relate to and might be
struggling with similar things might help

● that was heavy
● the opening scene, i almost cried too
● I felt like she is so strong to survive what she did , both the sexual trauma and
that significant low. I thought that it was amazing when she came out and how
she felt afterwards.
● I definitely am so empathetic that i cry all the time for others. That scene at
the beginning reminds me of when i lost my mom and the darkest days of my
depression. It was very relatable
● The combination of the silent video and the slightly drowned out narration
built a sense of sorrow and inner conflict of wanting to be seen but also hide
parts of yourself at the same time which was very strong and provoked many
mixed emotion
#Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support ourselves
and others?
● Be there for the person to talk to. Really listen and ask how we can help. Ot just
reach out and help someone struggling before they have to ask
● Let them know that you are a safe person
● I think conversations and awareness surrounding support and recognition of
others would be really good especially starting in grade levels before middle
school and the self esteem shifts
