Personal Statement - First Draft
Growing up and sitting around the TV as a family, I was completely unaware of the way I was subconsciously being fed information
which shaped me into who I am today as a person. The effects of digital media are ever-growing and mould our world into a more
entertaining and beguiling place to be. The media and its influence on our everyday lives hold a great fascination. I have found myself
recording parts of my life at different stages of the technological revolution, through Film and TV and have come to understand how
social media has evolved over a very short space of time - and has, over recent years, turned my personal uploads into artifacts and
recollections of moments in time.
My enjoyment of making short films, which later led to my admiration for the media industry as a whole, started from a young age
when I would spend hours alone in my room making bizarre short films on my parent's iPad. Looking back on these nostalgic
memories, I believe this led to my decision to study media GCSE which I succeeded at with ease. I currently study Creative Media
Production Extended Diploma Level 3 at college, and I have found it to be an excellent opportunity to acquire knowledge that will
prepare me for higher education. As my course is entirely coursework, I have been given the opportunity to develop so many skills
whilst contributing to my final grade such as web design, animation, photoshop, photography and evaluation skills. My tutors at
college have even previously praised my artistic skill and have said that I have an eye for design when submitting the practical
aspects of my college work. Studying Creative Media has provided me with experience in using Adobe Photoshop and advanced my
confidence in critiquing my own work so that I can strive to make my personal projects and designs outstanding.
My aptitude for communication and associated skills have been useful to myself and peers when working as a team on a group
project and has allowed me to encourage my teammates to succeed. I have further developed these skills through different part time
jobs. I currently work in retail, at Calvin Klein, which has taught me the rewards of hard work - another skill that I will benefit from in
higher education. Working in such an engaging and sometimes pressured environment has made me realise the way in which trends
come and go and the importance of catering to the needs of the target audience of the brand. This has also given me a front-line
view of selling products to consumers; therefore, I understand how an audience may react to different marketing strategies.
Considering my skills and interests, I would find fulfilment working in the creative industry as I have enjoyed my studies so far and
have hopefully developed enough skills that will grant me success in my chosen degree.
Choosing to study Digital Media is ideal for me as I can continue to master skills in research and my study of media and how it
infiltrates society. I am excited to take this opportunity to learn and additionally elevate my confidence in meeting new people. I will
bring my creativity and drive to the learning environment, and I hope to leave with great, new experiences that will open a door to so
many opportunities.

Final/sent Personal Statement
Throughout my current studies in Creative Media Production, I have begun to understand the nature of the enormous influence of
media technologies. Its ability to influence the behaviours and thoughts of people, and the culture we live in, understanding that the
media shapes the way we view the world and other people brings enormous ethical responsibility. The concept of imagination and the
ways the quality of creativity breed new unique ideas and opportunities for society holds great fascination for me. I believe the media
industry takes the crown for the most innovative field due to the way it constantly re-invents itself. As a relatively modern industry
opportunities to be involved in its evolution are ever-growing. I am captivated by how the art of media is conveyed to audiences,
generating concepts across various media and the way it influences each new generation.
Growing up, sitting around the TV as a family, I was completely unaware of how I was subconsciously being fed information that
shaped me into who I am. The effects of digital media mould our world into a more entertaining and beguiling place to be. I find
myself recalling parts of my life at different stages of the technological revolution. Through the influences of Film and TV, I have come
to understand how social media has evolved over a short space of time and has, over recent years, turned my personal uploads into
artefacts and my historical recollections. My passion for creativity in digital media, which led to my admiration for the industry, started
at a young age. I would spend hours alone in my room making bizarre short films on my parents' iPad. Looking back, this led to my
decision to study media GCSE. My current study has allowed me to explore future careers. I have found it to be an excellent
opportunity to acquire knowledge that will prepare me for university. As my course is entirely coursework, I have had the opportunity
to develop skills including website design, animation, photoshop, editing, advertising campaigns, and evaluation, contributing to my
final grade. Studying Creative Media has opened my eyes to new ways of exploring how other people view things and possibilities in
the world of digital design, marketing products to specific audiences, and exploring PR. An example of this would be how I explored
the layers of marketing a product when creating a perfume product and its ad campaign as my FMP for my first year in college.
Working on this allowed me to improve my skills as a whole, developing a greater understanding of the world of marketing as a
subject, to progressing my photography, videography, and editing skills.
My aptitude for communication and associated social skills have been useful in working as a team and has allowed me to encourage
others to succeed whilst taking different roles. This also involved final reflections and assessments of areas for development. I
currently work in retail, at Calvin Klein, which has taught me the rewards of hard work - another skill that I will benefit from later.
Working in an engaging, pressured environment has made me realise how trends come and go and the importance of catering to the
needs of brand target audiences. This gave me front-line view of selling to consumers; I understand how audiences react to different
marketing strategies.
Choosing to study the design, technology, and promotion of digital media is ideal for me. I hope to master research skills, the study of
print, social and graphic media, and how they infiltrate every aspect of society. I will benefit from your course as I aspire to pursue a
career in digital media where I can work in an artistic environment and create unique editorial products that inspire others. I am
excited to take this next opportunity to learn and elevate my confidence in meeting new people. I will bring creativity and drive to your
learning environment and hope to leave with experiences that will open doors to new opportunities.
Year 1 Review
Which projects have you
enjoyed most this year & why?
The project I have enjoyed the most this year was probably my Final
Major Project. This is because I felt as though I had full creative
responsibility throughout and I noticed the rewards of hard work a lot
more whilst working on this project than I had with any prior projects.
This is because the format of the whole product/design was
completely up to me and therefore seeing the final product, after all
the alterations and editing, felt rewarding and satisfying. Overall, I
liked the concept that I created for my FMP and had a lot of fun since
there were so many aspects that needed to be thought of when
designing a perfume brand and the tv advertisement that comes
along with it.
Which projects have you
least enjoyed [& why]?
The project I probably least enjoyed this year has got to
be the audio soundscape project. This is because I believe
that my creative skills lie mostly in the artistic design
element and obviously when working with audio, that
element doesn’t exist. Therefore, I lacked whilst
producing my soundscape as I felt bored throughout as I
was not applying the skills that I am used to and enjoy
most.
What is your biggest success
My biggest success of the year has been the result I got
for my FMP evaluation as it was the highest mark I had
received all year and at the start of year 1 I believed that
my evaluation skills were my biggest lack and never
would've thought that by the end of the year that would
be what elevated my grade, and to me, I would consider
that a success. Now, I have noticed the change in detail to
my writing and feel a sense of accomplishment after a
large amount.
What has been your biggest
mistake in coursework
The biggest mistake I have made this year is my lack of
effort at the start of the year. I did not put in 100% effort
and therefore brought down my grade average for year 1.
On top of this, my punctuality was not ideal and caused a
few mishaps in my projects due to falling behind slightly
and then having to spend extra time catching up on work.
I hope to fix both mistakes next year and start the year
with a fresh mindset and ensure I put in enough effort
into my college life.
Which skills do you think
you have developed most?
One skill that I have developed the most this year has got
to be my evaluation skill. This is because I have noticed a
huge change in my quality of writing and ability to
consciously take not of my mistakes and highlight how I
can improve the quality of my projects. I can also speak
widely about a product's target audience and the steps
taken to please the audience and the importance of
having a satisfied consumer – which is incredibly useful in
the whole media field.
Another skill that I have developed the most this year is
my editing skills on Adobe Photoshop. This is because I
now have a much deeper understanding of the software
and have picked up different techniques that help me to
produce an artistic design that fits my product.
What area are aiming to
specialise in during Year 2?
I am aiming to specialise in photography and design
moving forward next year as these are the two skills that I
want to master in media. I see myself working in the
media marketing field (hopefully for a fashion/lifestyle
brand) and therefore want to perfect the aesthetics of
different products and how to sell and advertise that
product to an audience.

Year 2 Review
Which projects have you
enjoyed most this year & why?
The project that I have enjoyed partaking in this year was definitely my
FMP. This is because I have never involved so much attention and thought
into a piece of work as I had done with my Final Major Project which led
me to feel an immense sense of fulfilment and self-assurance once I had
completed it. I believe that the excessive amounts of planning and
production played as a perfect stepping-stone into the realities of hard
work that I will have to face in the future. I am extremely proud of the
outcome of my hard work and how I managed to build a mock-up design
of a whole makeup brand in the space of time that I was given for my
FMP. In addition to this, the amount of positive feedback that I have
received from my peers at college and friends and family has allowed me
to feel confident in myself as I head towards working in a similar field at
University.
In addition to this, I really enjoyed the factual project that we took part in
as the second project of the year. I was granted the opportunity to think
of many ways to present our factual research on a person and/or subject
such as filming and directing a documentary, recording a podcast/ radio
Which projects have you
enjoyed most this year & why?
I chose to create a fanzine based off the world-famous fashion
designer and activist Vivienne Westwood. Producing a fanzine was
new territory to me and I was eager to explore the new territory and
boundaries that I could push in the design process. I believe that I
creatively applied my photoshop design skills in a unique way and the
praise and acclaim that I received from my tutors once I had
submitted my work was the perfect boost in confidence as I headed
into beginning my FMP.
Which projects have you
least enjoyed [& why]?
In all honesty, the project that I least enjoyed working on this year was the
first project which was the FutureYork Audience Presentation project. I believe
that I lacked in motivation as I was learning to get back into the groove of
college work after my long summer and therefore was short of efficiency and
overall effort. I think that the final product of design for the fanzine was okay
and creative in a sense, however the level of planning and research led me to
fall behind and not have a clear mindset as I began the production process.
The fanzine’ entirety consisted of only six pages in total, whereas, my
Vivienne Westwood fanzine consisted of sixteen. It is clear to see when my
motivation switched and I became much more eager to reach the grades that
I know I am capable of.

Working in such an engaging and sometimes pressured environment has made me realise the way in which trends come and go and the importance of catering to the needs of the target audience of the brand. This has also given me a front-line view of selling products to consumers; therefore, I understand how an audience may react to different marketing strategies. Considering my skills and interests, I would find fulfilment working in the creative industry as I have enjoyed my studies so far and have hopefully developed enough skills that will grant me success in my chosen degree. Choosing to study Digital Media is ideal for me as I can continue to master skills in research and my study of media and how it infiltrates society. I am excited to take this opportunity to learn and additionally elevate my confidence in meeting new people. I will bring my creativity and drive to the learning environment, and I hope to leave with great, new experiences that will open a door to so many opportunities. Olivia Day
  • 12. Final/sent Personal Statement Throughout my current studies in Creative Media Production, I have begun to understand the nature of the enormous influence of media technologies. Its ability to influence the behaviours and thoughts of people, and the culture we live in, understanding that the media shapes the way we view the world and other people brings enormous ethical responsibility. The concept of imagination and the ways the quality of creativity breed new unique ideas and opportunities for society holds great fascination for me. I believe the media industry takes the crown for the most innovative field due to the way it constantly re-invents itself. As a relatively modern industry opportunities to be involved in its evolution are ever-growing. I am captivated by how the art of media is conveyed to audiences, generating concepts across various media and the way it influences each new generation. Growing up, sitting around the TV as a family, I was completely unaware of how I was subconsciously being fed information that shaped me into who I am. The effects of digital media mould our world into a more entertaining and beguiling place to be. I find myself recalling parts of my life at different stages of the technological revolution. Through the influences of Film and TV, I have come to understand how social media has evolved over a short space of time and has, over recent years, turned my personal uploads into artefacts and my historical recollections. My passion for creativity in digital media, which led to my admiration for the industry, started at a young age. I would spend hours alone in my room making bizarre short films on my parents' iPad. Looking back, this led to my decision to study media GCSE. My current study has allowed me to explore future careers. I have found it to be an excellent opportunity to acquire knowledge that will prepare me for university. As my course is entirely coursework, I have had the opportunity to develop skills including website design, animation, photoshop, editing, advertising campaigns, and evaluation, contributing to my final grade. Studying Creative Media has opened my eyes to new ways of exploring how other people view things and possibilities in the world of digital design, marketing products to specific audiences, and exploring PR. An example of this would be how I explored the layers of marketing a product when creating a perfume product and its ad campaign as my FMP for my first year in college. Working on this allowed me to improve my skills as a whole, developing a greater understanding of the world of marketing as a subject, to progressing my photography, videography, and editing skills. My aptitude for communication and associated social skills have been useful in working as a team and has allowed me to encourage others to succeed whilst taking different roles. This also involved final reflections and assessments of areas for development. I currently work in retail, at Calvin Klein, which has taught me the rewards of hard work - another skill that I will benefit from later. Working in an engaging, pressured environment has made me realise how trends come and go and the importance of catering to the needs of brand target audiences. This gave me front-line view of selling to consumers; I understand how audiences react to different marketing strategies. Choosing to study the design, technology, and promotion of digital media is ideal for me. I hope to master research skills, the study of print, social and graphic media, and how they infiltrate every aspect of society. I will benefit from your course as I aspire to pursue a career in digital media where I can work in an artistic environment and create unique editorial products that inspire others. I am excited to take this next opportunity to learn and elevate my confidence in meeting new people. I will bring creativity and drive to your learning environment and hope to leave with experiences that will open doors to new opportunities.
  • 14. Which projects have you enjoyed most this year & why? The project I have enjoyed the most this year was probably my Final Major Project. This is because I felt as though I had full creative responsibility throughout and I noticed the rewards of hard work a lot more whilst working on this project than I had with any prior projects. This is because the format of the whole product/design was completely up to me and therefore seeing the final product, after all the alterations and editing, felt rewarding and satisfying. Overall, I liked the concept that I created for my FMP and had a lot of fun since there were so many aspects that needed to be thought of when designing a perfume brand and the tv advertisement that comes along with it.
  • 15. Which projects have you least enjoyed [& why]? The project I probably least enjoyed this year has got to be the audio soundscape project. This is because I believe that my creative skills lie mostly in the artistic design element and obviously when working with audio, that element doesn’t exist. Therefore, I lacked whilst producing my soundscape as I felt bored throughout as I was not applying the skills that I am used to and enjoy most.
  • 16. What is your biggest success My biggest success of the year has been the result I got for my FMP evaluation as it was the highest mark I had received all year and at the start of year 1 I believed that my evaluation skills were my biggest lack and never would've thought that by the end of the year that would be what elevated my grade, and to me, I would consider that a success. Now, I have noticed the change in detail to my writing and feel a sense of accomplishment after a large amount.
  • 17. What has been your biggest mistake in coursework The biggest mistake I have made this year is my lack of effort at the start of the year. I did not put in 100% effort and therefore brought down my grade average for year 1. On top of this, my punctuality was not ideal and caused a few mishaps in my projects due to falling behind slightly and then having to spend extra time catching up on work. I hope to fix both mistakes next year and start the year with a fresh mindset and ensure I put in enough effort into my college life.
  • 18. Which skills do you think you have developed most? One skill that I have developed the most this year has got to be my evaluation skill. This is because I have noticed a huge change in my quality of writing and ability to consciously take not of my mistakes and highlight how I can improve the quality of my projects. I can also speak widely about a product's target audience and the steps taken to please the audience and the importance of having a satisfied consumer – which is incredibly useful in the whole media field. Another skill that I have developed the most this year is my editing skills on Adobe Photoshop. This is because I now have a much deeper understanding of the software and have picked up different techniques that help me to produce an artistic design that fits my product.
  • 19. What area are aiming to specialise in during Year 2? I am aiming to specialise in photography and design moving forward next year as these are the two skills that I want to master in media. I see myself working in the media marketing field (hopefully for a fashion/lifestyle brand) and therefore want to perfect the aesthetics of different products and how to sell and advertise that product to an audience.

  • 22. Which projects have you enjoyed most this year & why? The project that I have enjoyed partaking in this year was definitely my FMP. This is because I have never involved so much attention and thought into a piece of work as I had done with my Final Major Project which led me to feel an immense sense of fulfilment and self-assurance once I had completed it. I believe that the excessive amounts of planning and production played as a perfect stepping-stone into the realities of hard work that I will have to face in the future. I am extremely proud of the outcome of my hard work and how I managed to build a mock-up design of a whole makeup brand in the space of time that I was given for my FMP. In addition to this, the amount of positive feedback that I have received from my peers at college and friends and family has allowed me to feel confident in myself as I head towards working in a similar field at University. In addition to this, I really enjoyed the factual project that we took part in as the second project of the year. I was granted the opportunity to think of many ways to present our factual research on a person and/or subject such as filming and directing a documentary, recording a podcast/ radio
  • 23. Which projects have you enjoyed most this year & why? I chose to create a fanzine based off the world-famous fashion designer and activist Vivienne Westwood. Producing a fanzine was new territory to me and I was eager to explore the new territory and boundaries that I could push in the design process. I believe that I creatively applied my photoshop design skills in a unique way and the praise and acclaim that I received from my tutors once I had submitted my work was the perfect boost in confidence as I headed into beginning my FMP.
  • 24. Which projects have you least enjoyed [& why]? In all honesty, the project that I least enjoyed working on this year was the first project which was the FutureYork Audience Presentation project. I believe that I lacked in motivation as I was learning to get back into the groove of college work after my long summer and therefore was short of efficiency and overall effort. I think that the final product of design for the fanzine was okay and creative in a sense, however the level of planning and research led me to fall behind and not have a clear mindset as I began the production process. The fanzine’ entirety consisted of only six pages in total, whereas, my Vivienne Westwood fanzine consisted of sixteen. It is clear to see when my motivation switched and I became much more eager to reach the grades that I know I am capable of.
