MH Across Cultures
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental health in
multiple ways. In just a few words, please share: How have you experienced the concept
of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?
● I thought it meant you have a serious problem if you are in therapy
● No such thing as mental health
● not real
● Unaccepted
● Keep it together - do not share
● Latinx "cursed"
● not talked about, pretending its not there
● does not exist in "our culture"
● Therapy is for White people
● Men can't show emotions

● "You don't have to hurt yourself for people to love you"
● I felt mad at society and just so sad
● I felt the pain
● Tears, sadness, and anger towards society. Compassion for
him.
● Very sad
● I felt multiple emotions
● Everyone deserves love first
● Hurt that people have to hide themselves to be accepted
● upset that society is still this way today for people of color
● 4th x seeing it. I ADORE it. Haunts me. My heart is bursting
with love.

judgement is so toxic.

● So proud of the protagonists!
● felt sad that these individuals couldnt be who they wanted to
be
● I felt upset that there is so much judgment
● Witnessing the incredible strength and power of people who
are truly themselves.
● People shouldn't have to struggle for presenting themselves
as who they are
● hopeful and inspired by the power of drag and community
● Inspired by their courage 🌷
● I thought: where can I get a copy of this? EVERYONE needs to
watch this! I felt so warm and loving.
How can we support
ourselves and others?
● With love
● Check in
● spread awareness on the issue
● spread love and kindness to all
● validating feelings
● Kindness
● Always being questioned is just another form of marginalizing who we are as individuals.
● stop judging
● With support & compassion
● normalize this as a society
● love and validation
● Being there for them
● offer a shoulder or helping to hand to others
● Tolerance is not enough. Acceptance and Love are the only choice
● Support them!
● listening to people when they need to vent and not judging
● listening with an intent to understand
● simply listening
● try to be understanding and never NEVER invalidate anything they are feeling
● don't try to fix what they are feeling
● Listening & being present.
● try to only offer advice when asked for it
● LIsten and don't try to fix their feelings.
● stop harassment and or bullying
● be empathetic and be able to understand the struggles and challenges people face
● stand up for others who can't
● Validate and normalize their experiences.
● don't force them to seek help when they are not ready it may do more harm then good unless
they are in extreme crisis or danger

In just a few words, please share: How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own cultural communities? ● I thought it meant you have a serious problem if you are in therapy ● No such thing as mental health ● not real ● Unaccepted ● Keep it together - do not share ● Latinx "cursed" ● not talked about, pretending its not there ● does not exist in "our culture" ● Therapy is for White people ● Men can't show emotions ● Defined as "Crazy" ● therapy = crazy ● Weak ● "it's a phase" ● pray it away. ● being looked down on for self-expression ● no one believes its real into you do something drastic ● overreacting ● therapy means accepting you think something is wrong with you ● attention seeking ● suicide is "a tragedy" but suicidal is "attention seeking" ● Oh my god the attention seeking thing makes me mad but yes ● therapy=crying for attention ● deal with it by yourself not really brought up

The one who everyone goes to for help

What did you feel? ● "You don't have to hurt yourself for people to love you" ● I felt mad at society and just so sad ● I felt the pain ● Tears, sadness, and anger towards society. Compassion for him. ● Very sad ● I felt multiple emotions ● Everyone deserves love first ● Hurt that people have to hide themselves to be accepted ● upset that society is still this way today for people of color ● 4th x seeing it. I ADORE it. Haunts me. My heart is bursting with love. ● So powerful! So sad & anger by the unfairness and how judgement is so toxic. ● my whole chest feels heavy and tight from it

What are some practices that help support your wellness? ● recognizing and validating my feelings ● spreading awareness ● daily affirmations ● singing ● mindfulness and meditation ● writing, music, spending time with my child ● My Higher Power/Higher Purpose ● disconnect from phone, journaling ● Same for me, the ocean is so powerful. Time with other womxn. ● Loving yourself by self affirmation. ● I burn sage ● writing how i feel ● again, my cat :) ● I have really poor coping mechanisms but using art can be quite relaxing for me ● nala my dog ● Working on my gardening - pulling weeds ● massage! ● YES! I try to visit the ocean 1x per week. Meditation in the morning to start my day. Talking with emotionally safe and supportive people, painting. ● relaxing baths ● Reading a poem a day & gardening 💜 ● reading daily devotion and reflecting and appreciating everything I am blessed with ● spending quality time with people whos energy i can vibe with ● Aromatherapy candles in every room!!! 💜 ● I love candles

EVERYONE needs to watch this! I felt so warm and loving.

How can we support ourselves and others? ● With love ● Check in ● spread awareness on the issue ● spread love and kindness to all ● validating feelings ● Kindness ● Always being questioned is just another form of marginalizing who we are as individuals. ● stop judging ● With support & compassion ● normalize this as a society ● love and validation ● Being there for them ● offer a shoulder or helping to hand to others ● Tolerance is not enough. Acceptance and Love are the only choice ● Support them! ● listening to people when they need to vent and not judging ● listening with an intent to understand ● simply listening ● try to be understanding and never NEVER invalidate anything they are feeling ● don't try to fix what they are feeling ● Listening & being present. ● try to only offer advice when asked for it ● LIsten and don't try to fix their feelings. ● stop harassment and or bullying ● be empathetic and be able to understand the struggles and challenges people face ● stand up for others who can't ● Validate and normalize their experiences. ● don't force them to seek help when they are not ready it may do more harm then good unless they are in extreme crisis or danger
