USAID is providing valuable assistance to Madagascar by increasing access to contraception and reducing maternal mortality. Following a 2009 coup, health services deteriorated for the poor and rural populations. USAID funds NGOs like Marie Stopes Madagascar to ensure continued access to voluntary contraceptive services, especially long-acting and permanent methods. With USAID support, Marie Stopes Madagascar provides contraceptive services and outreach to remote communities, reaching an estimated 436,000 people and averting over 900 maternal deaths between 2010-2014. USAID also helps strengthen private and public health sectors to expand contraceptive choice and availability across Madagascar.
