Q: Which objects in Cognos are mapped to which dimensions in Tableau when using the Senturus Analytics Connector? A: The package maps to “Database,” the namespaces map to “Schema” and the query subjects map to “Tables.” Q: Are all Framework Manager objects e.g calcs, filters, data and object level security available in Tableau via the Connector? A: Any security applied in the package is respected. Q: When the joins are created in Cognos does the Senturus Analytics Connector import them when pulled into Tableau? A: No, the joins in Tableau are dummy joins. We pass the query back to Cognos/MSTR and let it figure out the underlying query based on the model logic.

Q: Does the Senturus Analytics Connector use calculations and their associated aggregation rules defined in Cognos? A: Yes. Q: Is it possible to use the Senturus Analytics Connector if I have one Tableau Desktop? A: You would need to have multiple Tableau Desktop users, but typically in most environments companies are creating extracts on Tableau Desktop using the Connector. These are then pushed to a larger population on the Server, which would require a group of licenses. Q: If we're running Cognos BI 10.2.2, can we use the Senturus Analytics Connector? A: Yes, Cognos BI is supported.

Q: Do we need to be connected to the Framework Manager model and already published to the server to use the Senturus Analytics Connector? A: Yes. The Connector doesn’t connect to the Framework Manager client, we connect to the server via the Cognos dispatcher and retrieve package metadata that way, so the package needs to be published to be accessed. Q: What is the difference between a multi-year package and a subscription? A: The multi-year package is perpetual so you only continue to pay for maintenance and upgrades. It’s also typically a capital expense. Subscription renews on a yearly basis – basically you don’t’ own the software you “rent” it. It’s also typically an operating expense, so sometimes more palatable from a procurement perspective.

A: The Connector has not been tested against an in-memory cube, but if it’s exposed via the project it would likely be available. We would want to test this in a POC. Q: Does the Senturus Analytics Connector work when Tableau is in AWS while MicroStrategy in on-premise? If so, what protocol and ports need to be opened? A: If you have your firewall set up such that the two environments can see each other you should be able to do this. Q: Will the Senturus Analytics Connector support BOBJ universe metadata models in future releases? A: It’s on the Connector’s roadmap.

We use folder level security; how would we manage that in Tableau? A: The Connector only supports package based security. It doesn’t access the Cognos portal so those attributes aren’t seen. Q: Is there a restriction on the type of reports the Senturus Analytics Connector uses in MicroStrategy, such as document, cube reports, FFSQL reports. A: The Connector does not access reports, only metrics and attributes. Reports are created on the fly and are executed in MSTR.

Q: What kind of additional security roles should be in place for the Senturus Analytics Connector to access packages from the server? A: Nothing special is required. The Connector works with your existing roles. Q: We do heavy joins in Report Studio in Cognos. Is there a way we can work with the Report Studio xml and pass that into Tableau using the Senturus Analytics Connector? How do we implement the same in Tableau? A: The Connector does not support connecting to reports at this point.
