Dimensions of HEIs
Instructional dimensions
Instructional strategies
Lecture as an instructional method Lecture methods usually designed to develop lower cognitive skills Lecture still holds - central position at many levels of education Lecture method is not particularly effective in achieving higher cognitive objectives. (helping students to apply basic facts and principles, analyze, synthesize, solve problems etc) Non-interactive - students are normally passive listeners
The most important uses of lectures: To provide a general introduction to a course To provide to broad overview of a new topic or subject area To deal in depth with a particularly important principle, law, theorem, method etc and its main applications To provide a detailed description of a key system or process To provide a detailed case study in an important area To present a critical comparative evaluation of processes / methods
Engaged learners
Multi-sensory perceptions of learners
Core thinking skills of learners
Multiple thinking processes
The outcomes of education A list of learners' abilities (Nightingale, Te Wiata, Toohey, Ryan Hughes and Magin, 1996) Thinking critically and making judgements Solving problems and developing plans Performing procedures and demonstrating techniques Managing and developing oneself Accessing and managing information Demonstrating knowledge and understanding Designing, creating, performing and Communicating
Train the mind to think As Albert Einstain once put it, "The true purpose of education is to train the mind to think" Essential skills of students' success Learning to think Learning to learn
Teaching – learning Process: Tools and techniques Teaching – learning process is an integral part of any educational system. Tools and techniques are essential ingredients of teaching – learning process In general tools and techniques can be broadly defined as the practical methods and skills applied to specific activities to enable improvements
Why visual literacy? 90% of all information that comes into our brain is VISUAL 40% of all nerve fibres connected to the brain are linked to the RETINA 36,000 visual images per hour may be registered by the EYES From Brain Based Learning - Eric Jensen, 1996
Applications of visual thinking Composing Designing Planning Authoring Process planning Time tabling Creativity and innovation Scenarios Team building Purposing Visioning Strategic diagrams Action planning
There are 4 benefits of using visual learning techniques V isual learning 1. Helps the students clarify thoughts and information 2. Reinforces understanding through connection 3. Helps the student integrate knowledge with prior learning 4. Helps the teacher identify students' misconceptions. " One seeing is better than a hundred times telling about" - Old Chinese proverb.
Why visual tools? Reasons 1 . Visual tools provide direction for thinking .Students find success as self- directed learners. 2 . Visual tools make it possible to reach higher - order thinking skills (HOTS). It can help visual learners more effectively organize their thinking
Qualities of visual tools Reflective Visual tools Consistent Integrative Developmental Flexible
Visual tools Physical models Mental pictures Pictures and pictographs Kinesthetic activity Visual maps Brainstorming webs Task-specific organizers Thinking - process maps
Visual tools Visual learning helps students to: Brainstorm ideas Develop, organize and communicate ideas See connections, patterns and relationships Assess and share prior knowledge Develop vocabulary Outline for writing process activities Highlight important ideas Clarify or categorize concepts, ideas and information Comprehend the events in a story or book Improve social interaction between students and facilitate group work and collaboration among peers Guide, review and study Improve reading comprehensive skills and strategies Facilitate recall and retention
