What Bible Verses Are About Easter?
Easter is the most important celebration in the Christian faith. It commemorates the
resurrection of Jesus Christ, an event that defines Christianity. The resurrection is a
victory over sin and death, offering believers eternal life. Easter is not just a holiday—
it’s a reminder of God‘s love for humanity, and it connects deeply to the core message
of the Bible.
In this article, we will look at several Bible verses related to Easter. These verses
highlight the significance of Christ’s resurrection, the hope it brings, and the victory
over death. We will also explore how these verses encourage and strengthen the faith
of Christians around the world.
The Significance of Easter in the Bible
Before diving into the Bible verses themselves, it’s important to understand why
Easter is significant. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Christian
faith. The Apostle Paul explains this in 1 Corinthians 15:17:
“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in
your sins.”
The resurrection shows that Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the world. It
proves that He has conquered death and offers eternal life to those who believe in
Him. Easter is more than a celebration of an event; it is a celebration of hope,
forgiveness, and new life.
Bible Verses That Tell About Jesus’ Death and
Resurrection
Easter is closely tied to Jesus’ death on the cross. Without His death, the resurrection
would not have been possible. Several Bible passages describe the events of Jesus’
death and resurrection in detail. Here are some of the most important verses:
1. Matthew 28:5-7 – The Angel’s Announcement
In the Gospel of Matthew, we read about the moment when the women visited Jesus’
tomb and were greeted by an angel:
“The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you
are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen,
just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Then go quickly
and tell His disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead
of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ Now I have told you.'”
This passage tells us that Jesus’ resurrection was not just an event, but a promise
fulfilled. The angel assures the women that Jesus is no longer dead—He is alive!
2. Luke 24:6-7 – Remembering Jesus’ Words
In the Gospel of Luke, the resurrection is also described in great detail. In this
passage, two angels speak to the women who arrived at the tomb:
“He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you, while He
was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over
to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised
again.'”
This verse is important because it shows how Jesus had already prepared His
followers for His death and resurrection. His resurrection was not a surprise to Him,
nor should it have been to His disciples. He had spoken about it many times.
3. John 20:19-20 – Jesus Appears to His Disciples
The Gospel of John provides an intimate look at Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances.
After His resurrection, He first appears to His disciples:
“On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were
together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus
came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ After He
said this, He showed them His hands and side. The disciples were
overjoyed when they saw the Lord.”
This moment is significant because it shows that Jesus conquered death. His disciples
were afraid and uncertain, but when Jesus appeared to them, He brought peace and
joy. His resurrection assured them that He was alive and would continue to guide
them.
4. Mark 16:6 – The Angel’s Message
Mark also records the moment of the resurrection, where an angel tells the women
who visit the tomb that Jesus has risen:
“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene,
who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where
they laid Him.”
The angel’s message is clear—Jesus is no longer in the tomb. His body is not there.
He has risen, just as He promised.
Old Testament Prophecies of the Resurrection
Easter is not just a New Testament event; the resurrection was also foretold in the Old
Testament. These prophecies point toward the coming of the Messiah and His
ultimate victory over death. Here are some key Old Testament prophecies related to
the resurrection:
1. Psalm 16:10 – A Prophecy of the Resurrection
In the Book of Psalms, David writes about the resurrection:
“Because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will
you let your faithful one see decay.”
This verse is a prophecy of the resurrection of Jesus. It speaks of God’s promise to not
let His faithful servant see decay, pointing forward to Jesus’ body not decaying in the
grave but being resurrected.
2. Isaiah 53:3-5 – The Suffering Servant
Isaiah 53 is one of the clearest prophecies about the coming Messiah, His suffering,
and His ultimate victory. It describes how the Messiah would be rejected, suffer, and
die for the sins of humanity. While it does not directly mention the resurrection, it
lays the foundation for understanding why Jesus had to die and what would follow:
“He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and
familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces, He
was despised, and we held Him in low esteem. Surely He took up our
pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered Him punished by God,
stricken by Him, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our
transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that
brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds, we are healed.”
Jesus’ resurrection is the proof that His suffering and death were not in vain. His
death was the payment for our sins, and His resurrection is the declaration that God
accepted the sacrifice and that sin and death were defeated.
The Purpose of Jesus’ Resurrection
The resurrection of Jesus serves many purposes in the life of a believer. Here are a
few important points to understand about why Jesus rose from the dead:
1. To Prove That Jesus is the Son of God
In Romans 1:4, Paul writes:
“Who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in
power by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The resurrection affirms that Jesus is indeed the Son of God. It confirms His divinity
and that He was sent to fulfill God’s will on earth.
2. To Give Believers Hope
The resurrection of Jesus gives Christians hope for their own future resurrection. In 1
Corinthians 15:20-22, Paul writes:
“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of
those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the
resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all
die, so in Christ all will be made alive.”
Because Jesus rose from the dead, believers know that they too will be resurrected
when Christ returns. This gives Christians hope, especially in times of grief or
suffering.
3. To Declare Victory Over Sin and Death
Jesus’ resurrection proves that sin and death no longer have the final say. In 1
Corinthians 15:55-57, Paul triumphantly declares:
“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The
sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to
God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The resurrection shows that death does not have the final word. Jesus’ victory over
death means that believers can live with the assurance of eternal life.
Conclusion
Easter is a powerful reminder of what Jesus did for us. Through His death and
resurrection, He conquered sin, death, and the grave. The Bible gives us many verses
that speak about the significance of the resurrection, from the angel’s announcement
in Matthew to the Old Testament prophecies that point to Jesus’ coming. These verses
show us that Jesus is the Son of God, the Savior of the world, and the hope of eternal
life.
As Christians celebrate Easter, they are reminded of the victory Jesus won for them.
His resurrection brings new life, peace, and hope to all who believe in Him. Let us
remember and rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, for it is through Him that we
have eternal life.
