The layperson's guide to software architectureThoughtworks
The document provides an overview of software architecture concepts for laypersons. It defines an architect as someone who investigates problems, partitions systems, makes plans while considering the big picture, decides tradeoffs, grows team skills, and manages technical debt. Software architecture is described as significant design decisions that shape a system based on cost of change. Key aspects of design thinking discussed are preserving ambiguity, recognizing that all design requires redesign, making designs tangible, and designing for humans. The document also covers who makes decisions, with architects accountable for quality attributes and risk, and discusses investing optimal time in architecture upfront to reduce long-term rework costs.

Presentation from Agile Base Camp 2 conference (Kiev, may 2010) about major activities to do before starting iterative development with one of the Agile methodologies.
As a tech leader at ThoughtWorks, a large part of my job involves recommending practices to our clients so they can build and deliver good quality software faster. In doing so repeatedly for many clients I have created a toolkit that contains practical advice from being on the ground. This is what we do, we know it works. When Julius Caesar entered Rome with his army by crossing the river Rubicon, he did something that couldn’t be undone ever again. In your journey as a leader, avoid mistakes that are difficult to correct later. Here are a set of practices that you want to adopt as soon as possible.

As Allen Brown admitted in my August 2013 Forbes article on TOGAF, “EA needs to catch up with the agile approach, not ‘Agile as such’.” This confusion over the word “agile” is actually one of the challenges with EA today. Brown continued: “‘Agile’ is a loaded term and largely associated with building solutions rather than the Enterprise Architecture.”
So, what does "agile" -- or in some quarters, "Agile" -- mean today, and how do we apply Agile to architecture? Most people use the phrase "Agile Architecture" to refer to software architecture appropriate for Agile software development projects -- not EA at all.
Nevertheless, there is a growing Agile EA movement that extends the core principles of the Agile manifesto to EA more broadly. This approach deemphasizes the role of frameworks and other artifacts, and instead treats the enterprise as a complex adaptive system.
Agile EA thus leverages complex systems theory, including the role of emergent properties, to rethink how organizations innovate and otherwise deal with change within the context of market and regulatory constraints.

This document discusses agile leadership dynamics and motivation. It introduces Dan Pink's motivational drive model, which describes three types of motivation: biological, rewards/punishments, and intrinsic motivation. Type X behavior is fueled by extrinsic rewards, while Type I behavior deals with inherent satisfaction from an activity itself. The document suggests moving from a Type X to a Type I culture. It also discusses how autonomy, mastery, and purpose from Daniel Pink's book can drive motivation. Finally, it outlines the roles of agile coach, product owner, and chapter lead, and suggests questions each role should ask to focus on autonomy, mastery, and purpose.
Continuous Delivery - The ING Story: Improving time to market with DevOps and...CA Technologies
ING Bank implemented continuous delivery and DevOps practices to improve their software delivery cycle. This allowed them to reduce time to market from over 20 weeks to just 4 days by automating testing, deployments, and enabling developers and operations teams to work together. Some challenges included changing organizational culture and mindsets, acquiring talent with continuous delivery skills, and ensuring supplier alignment with more frequent releases. Continuous delivery provided business benefits like increased release frequency, fewer outages, and improved customer experiences, but risks like security need ongoing attention for systems handling financial services.
The document discusses principles of continuous improvement known as Kaizen and the "Fish! Philosophy" for building great teams and winning consistently. Some key points covered include identifying waste, choosing a positive attitude, making others' day, and being present. It also promotes participating in an India Agile Adoption Survey to help the community and offers Agile consulting services. Contact information is provided for assistance.

Experiencing a large Agile Transformation by Hendrik Esser Agile ME
Leading a several thousand people organization towards Agile is not an easy task. It is a complex challenge where there is a very low predictability of success of your change initiatives. In this talk I will give you some theoretical background on how to successfully approach change in your company. I will exemplify this with the story of our agile change at Ericsson, one of the world’s largest SW companies. I will talk about our change initiatives, the desired and undesired things that emerged from them and how we acted upon them. This will help you understand the nature of an organizational change towards Agile and how to successfully approach it yourself.
Standard Bank: Agile, DevOps, Engineering Transformation and the Role of AppD...AppDynamics
Standard Bank's goal is to be the leading financial services organization in, for, and across Africa. We are investing heavily in a global digital strategy oriented around omni-channel capability delivered through self-service channels.
This strategy requires that we frequently deliver new functionality to customers across countries, channels, and business domains. To support this we must adopt sound engineering practices such as DevOps, test-driven development, and Agile.
In this session, we will highlight some of the key Agile engineering practices that support the journey and the role that AppDynamics has played in enabling these practices.
Key takeaways:
o How AppDynamics unblocks delivery and help to deliver quality software to our customers
o AppDynamics as a DevOps enabler, helping bridge the gap between operations and development
o Scenarios in which AppDynamics has prevented outages and reduced the amount of time it would take to restore service

DOES 15 - Jan-Joost Bouwman and Ingrid Algra - ITIL and DevOps Can Be Friends Gene Kim
Jan-Joost Bouwman, Enterprise Process Owner Change Management, ING
Ingrid Algra, IT Chapter lead, ING
ING is a worldwide financial institution, based in the Netherlands. The IT department of the Netherlands manages a mix of off the shelf applications and in house built software. Traditionally development was governed by CMMi and IT Servicemanagement by ITIL processes. Three years ago the developers started working in Agile/Scrum teams, dropping CMMi. The next step was to involve Operations as well and transform to an DevOps organisation, striving for Continuous Delivery.
In a lot of Agile organisation ITIL is considered the evil soul sucking epiphany of bureaucracy. But is it really? If we look at the tasks you perform in the ITIL processes Incident management, Problem management and Change management, you will find that a lot of those you still need to perform in an Agile/Scrum way of work. And that there actually is a lot of value in making some rules on how we want to interact in these processes between teams. But we may call the task differently than we were used to in ITIL. And we may choose to use different tools to handle parts of the process. We call this adaptation of ITIL Agile ITSM.
This talk focuses on the adaptations we have made to our ITSM processes to accommodate the requirements of an Agile/Scrum way of work. Proving that there is still value in a lot of the things we used to do in ITIL And that there is no real conflict between Agile and ITIL.

Bill is called by the CEO of Parts Unlimited and given an ultimatum - fix the massively over budget and late Phoenix Project IT initiative within 90 days or have his entire department outsourced. With the help of a board member, Bill starts implementing agile and DevOps practices like limiting work in progress, establishing consistent feedback loops, and creating a culture of continuous learning. This leads to breakthroughs like identifying too much reliance on one engineer, improving flow through development and operations, and bringing critical supplier resources in-house. The novel is used to effectively demonstrate these concepts through an entertaining narrative.
UX STRAT USA 2019: Richard Baker, GE TransportationUX STRAT

Due Date: Week 5 – Monday 5:00 pm
Weight: 10%
This is an individual assignment. There is an expectation that no two submissions will be the same.
Objectives
This assessment task relates to the following course objectives:
Observe real world information technology problems and apply project management
principles and techniques to solve these problems;
Employ a systems thinking approach to identify critical roles and stakeholders in
information technology projects;
Demonstrate decision-making processes to solve a range of information technology
project issues;
Utilise a range of organisational and self-management skills, emulating real world
practice of information technology project managers.
value the importance of effective communication to solve problems on information
technology projects
Task
During the Project Initiation phase, an important artefact is the Project Charter. This artefact clearly indicates
for the project team and all stakeholders the project objectives, scope and vision. In this assignment, you are
provided with a case study project description below. You will create a Project Charter for this project that
will be managed following the adaptive methodology of Agile Scrum. In a project managed using
traditional project management methodologies, the Charter would be a document of just a few pages (around
4) formally outlining the key objectives, schedule and stakeholders. In an Agile project, this artefact would
be displayed in the project team room.
Background
After top management determines which projects to pursue, then it becomes important to notify the organisation
about the projects. The Project Charter is used to authorise the project and nominate the project manager. The
Project Charter formally recognises the project and provides a summary of the details of the project.

Introduction to Design Thinking & Correlation to ScrumJeff ANGAMA
The document discusses how design thinking and agile frameworks like Scrum can be combined to deliver user-centered solutions. Some key points:
- Design thinking focuses on empathy, defining problems from the user's perspective, ideating solutions, prototyping, and testing iteratively.
- Scrum is an agile framework that uses sprints, daily stand-ups, backlogs and retrospectives for iterative delivery.
- Design thinking can be incorporated into Scrum through techniques like backlog grooming to understand user needs, prototyping solutions, and testing with users after each sprint.
- This approach ensures solutions are designed and delivered with a focus on the user experience through collaborative feedback loops.
Every company eventually encounters that “do-or-die” moment when the product cycle reaches the maturity stage and it’s necessary to pursue innovations. Borys Pratsiuk, Ph.D., Head of R&D Engineering at Ciklum describes how companies across all sectors and industries can use Research and Development as a Service to update and improve their products or services.

This document discusses Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS). CQRS separates commands and queries in an application by using different models for reading and writing data. This improves separation of concerns and allows for greater scalability. While CQRS requires upfront work to set up the infrastructure, it results in simpler domain models and a complete rebuild of application state is possible through event sourcing. The document provides examples of how to implement CQRS and addresses some common misconceptions.

Influence of Career Development on Retention of Employees in Private Univers...publication11
Retention of employees in universities is paramount for producing quantity and quality of human capital for
economic development of a country. Turnover has persistently remained high in private universities despite
employee attrition by institutions, which can disrupt organizational stability, quality of education and reputation.
Objectives of the study included performance appraisal, staff training and promotion practices on retention of
employees. Correlational research design and quantitative research were adopted. Total population was 85 with a
sample of 70 which was selected through simple random sampling. Data collection was through questionnaire and
analysed using multiple linear regression with help of SPSS. Results showed that both performance appraisal
(t=1.813, P=.076, P>.05) and staff training practices (t=-1.887, P=.065, P>.05) were statistical insignificant while
promotion practices (t=3.804, P=.000, P<.05) was statistically significantly influenced retention of employees.
The study concluded that performance appraisal and staff training has little relationship with employee retention
whereas promotion practices affect employee retention in private universities. Therefore, it was recommended
that organizations renovate performance appraisal and staff training practices while promoting employees
annually, review salary structure, ensure there is no biasness and promotion practices should be based on meritocracy. The findings could benefit management of private universities, Government and researchers.

#17: Here I explain that computer programming was too anarchistic and software engineering was too ordered.Agile is the middle road: it aligns nicely with the complex area of systems, in between order and chaos. This is often not understood correctly: Agile was not only a reaction against bureaucracy, it was also a reaction against anarchy.
#27: Why do we forget those things so easily in our daily work? How can we decrease delay’s? How can we fasten our feedback loops?make clear that almost everything developers do, they do it for the first time, i.e. the code doesn't exists and has to be discovered
