Connecting R to the Sensor WebDaniel Nüst Interoperable data exchange and reproducibility are increasingly important for modern scientific research. This paper shows how three open source projects work together to realize this: (i) the R project, providing the lingua franca for statistical analysis, (ii) the Open Geospatial Consortium's Sensor Observation Service (SOS), a standardized data warehouse service for storing and retrieving sensor measurements, and (iii) sos4R, a new project that connects the former two. We show how sos4R can bridge the gap be-tween two communities in science: spatial statistical analysis and visuali-zation on one side, and the Sensor Web community on the other. sos4R enables R users to integrate (near real-time) sensor observations directly into R. Finally, we evaluate the functionality of sos4R. The software en-capsulates the service's complexity with typical R function calls in a com-mon analysis workflow, but still gives users full flexibility to handle in-teroperability issues. We conclude that it is able to close the gap between R and the sensor web.

The IPTC, a consortium of the world's major news agencies, news publishers and news industry vendors, recently released rNews, a semantic standard for on-line news. rNews uses RDFa to annotate HTML documents with news-specific metadata, to help with search, ad placement, aggregation and the sharing of on-line news. Jayson Lorenzen, a software engineer with Business Wire and one of the IPTC Member organization delegates working on rNews, will give an overview of the IPTC, the rNews standard, why rNews is needed and how the standard was eventually created. The talk will include use cases and live demonstrations of rNews and will end with a call to action for you to participate; rNews is currently at version 0.5 and the IPTC is looking for feedback on how to improve the standard.

Machine Data Is EVERYWHERE: Use It for TestingTechWell As more applications are hosted on servers, they produce immense quantities of logging data. Quality engineers should verify that apps are producing log data that is existent, correct, consumable, and complete. Otherwise, apps in production are not easily monitored, have issues that are difficult to detect, and cannot be corrected quickly. Tom Chavez presents the four steps that quality engineers should include in every test plan for apps that produce log output or other machine data. First, test that the data is being created. Second, ensure that the entries are correctly formatted and complete. Third, make sure the data can be consumed by your company’s log analysis tools. And fourth, verify that the app will create all possible log entries from the test data that is supplied. Join Tom as he presents demos including free tools. The IPTC, a consortium of the world's major news agencies, news publishers and news industry vendors, recently released rNews, a semantic standard for on-line news. rNews uses RDFa to annotate HTML documents with news-specific metadata, to help with search, ad placement, aggregation and the sharing of on-line news. Jayson Lorenzen, a software engineer with Business Wire and one of the IPTC Member organization delegates working on rNews, will give an overview of the IPTC, the rNews standard, why rNews is needed and how the standard was eventually created. The talk will include use cases and live demonstrations of rNews and will end with a call to action for you to participate; rNews is currently at version 0.5 and the IPTC is looking for feedback on how to improve the standard.
