THE PRESENT TENSE SIMPLE

1. The Form:
1.1 Affirmative:

+ -s, -es

+ verb

Subiect

example:

(3rd person
singular)

I eat meat.
She eats vegetables.

Obs. The spelling of the 3rd person singular


a) the normal rule : add s to the base
form of the verb:
wants
eats
helps
drives

c) add es to the base form of the verbs


that end in y :

b) add es to the base form of the verbs


that end in s, z, ss, sh, ch, x, and o :
he kisses
she washes
he watches
she fixes
it goes

1.2 Negative:

consonant + y = ies
carry it carries
hurry she hurries
fly it flies

example: We dont know that man.


Mary doesnt read newspapers.

1.3 Interrogative:

Do/
Does

+ subiect

example: Do I know you?

2. The Use. The present simple is used in several ways:


2.1 to describe both habits and or routines (habitual aspect)
I eat supper every evening at 6:30.
2.2 to express general facts or the truth
The earth revolves around the sun.
2.3 to present thoughts, feelings, and other unchanging states
I think so. I like it. It is hot.
2.4 to indicate scheduled events in the near future
I take the bus tomorrow at 6:00.
2.5 to indicate events at any time in the future in a dependent clause
Ill retire when I reach age 65.
2.6 to provide narratives such as instructional narratives
Now I mix the ingredients; now I put the pan in the oven.
