TEXT 1

The Importance of Education

Education is important because it trains the human mind, opens people to the

rest of the world, and helps people find solutions to many of the world's problems.

Education trains the human mind to make the right decisions. From learning about past

decisions and mistakes, we can figure out what the best path to take is in certain

situations. Education helps people make the right decisions because it encourages

them to be thinkers. An educated person can think of the positive and negative effects

of every decision that they make and, more likely than not, they will make better

decisions than an uneducated person who does not know how to reason would. All

humans have some reasoning ability, but only the educated can reason and make

decisions in the most efficient way. This is because their reasoning skills have been fine

tuned. For example, an educated person may use his or her knowledge of science to fix

a chair or to determine why their metal baseball bat is rusting. For another problem, an

educated person might draw on their knowledge of English and logic to help them form

an argument. For an educated person, these tasks would be very simple. But, for an

uneducated person, these tasks would prove very difficult, if not impossible for some.

An uneducated person will have many difficulties in his or her life because he or she

does not possess the ability to reason as well as educated people can. The training of

6
the human mind is one of the most important values of education.

Education opens our minds to the outside world. It allows us to gain knowledge of other

cultures and to learn more about our own culture. An uneducated person is shut off from

the outside world. Because he or she can not read or write, the uneducated person can

not gain wisdom or insight from books, magazines, or other mediums. Someone who is

uneducated will not have knowledge of current events and will become isolated. On the

other hand, an educated person will gain knowledge of the outside world and will be

able to apply this knowledge to events in his or her own life. Instead of being isolated,

an educated person will be opened to new ideas.

Education helps to solve many of the world's problems. It is a simple fact that

countries with higher literacy rates generally have higher standards of living. Why is this

so? It is because the countries with higher literacy rates have citizens who are better

educated than the countries with lower literacy rates. One of the greatest sayings

dealing with education is this, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a

man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." This quote can be applied to

education. For example, if we make small donations to troubled countries, then in reality

we are really not helping them out very much. But, if we help to establish a strong

education system, then the citizens will gain reasoning skills, be opened to the rest of

the world, and ultimately will have a higher standard of living. Educated people can help

society in many different ways. An educated people will be able to communicate ideas

with each other better because they will know how to read and write. Also, the

knowledge gained from education will help everyone in their careers because they will

7
better understand what they are doing. Furthermore, education helps society because

an educated people will be able to help improve the society they currently live in by

applying their knowledge to the problems that they encounter. Education is necessary to

increase the economic, political, and social development of any country.

a) WH- questions.

i) What are the difficulties an uneducated people will face in their life?

ii) Where an educated person will apply their knowledge?

iii)Who can make better decision?

iv)When did this education is being so meaningful?

v) How did education helps people?

vi) Why education is so important?

TEXT 2

Love is any of a number of emotions related to a sense of strong affection and

attachment. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and

attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal

attraction ("I love my wife"). This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the

complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define,

even compared to other emotional states.

As an abstract concept, love usually refers to a deep, ineffable feeling of tenderly

caring for another person. Even this limited conception of love, however, encompasses

a wealth of different feelings, from the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love

to the nonsexual emotional closeness of familial and platonic love to the profound

oneness or devotion of religious love. Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator

of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one

of the most common themes in the creative arts.

a) Yes / No questions

i. Is it true there is variety of love?

ii. Does love is an abstract feeling?

iii. Are you agreeing with the statement ‘love is blind’?

iv. Do every single human need a love to live happily ever after?

v. Do you ever falling in love?

TEXT 3

There are many factors to consider before a study group can be formed. First of

all, it is important to decide how big a group is because the group size will determine

where the group meets for its study sessions. Any place that is conducive for discussion

is suitable; it could be a quiet corner in the school or someone’s home.

Beside that, the size of the group is important because it will determine how

effective the group is. Ideally, a study group must be small enough to ensure that

everyone gets a chance to speak up but large enough so that many ideas can be

brought up.

Lastly, the members of the same group must understand their goal and what they

are there to accomplish so that everyone will be focused and work towards that goal

and not regard the sessions as opportunities for socializing.

b) Tag questions

i. Study group is good, isn’t?

ii. We don’t need a large group for study group, do we?

iii. The size of the group is important, isn’t?

iv. We must understand what we are discussing, aren’t we?

JOURNAL REFLECTION

12
English Language Proficiency course had changed my expectations to English

Language world. Learning ELP gave me a very interesting experience especially in

the class. For this semester, I really enjoy learning this subject especially when my

friend and I were exposed by Pn. Aisah Bee to the phonetic symbols. I admitted,

before this I never know how to read the phonetic symbols in dictionary. I always

take it as easy till I know there are a lot of terms that I pronounce it incorrectly.

Besides, a enjoy learning ELP because the technique used by Pn. Aisah Bee in

classroom is interesting and attract us. She always approaches us by activities in

class such as quiz, games, conversation and group presentation. So that, we are not

bored and sleepy in classroom. I really love the way Pn. Aisah Bee attract us and it

is easier to understand what she is trying to tell us.

After I got the coursework, I felt excited to start it because the task is in different

form from the other task I got before. During the process to finish the assignment, I

learnt a lot of new things that I never know before. Beside the determination and

struggle, I also learnt how to complete the task correctly according to the theme

given. I should understand the main ideas of the topic to complete every single task

given. It eases me to solve the task because it is divided into a section. I also gain a

lot of knowledge about how to construct sentences and also how to read the word

using the phonetic symbols.
