Afghanistan was first used as a gateway to India by Alexander the Great and Darius 1. In
th
the 19 century it was made into a battlefield for the czarist Russia and British for control of
central Asia. Three Anglo-Afghan wars ended with out conclusion. In 1926 Emir Amanullah
founded the Afghan monarchy. Afghanistan is now a multi party republic, before then it was
controlled by the influence of the Islamic Taliban. Afghanistan is approximately the size of
Texas, it is bordered by Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. The country is split east and
west by the Hindu Kush Mountains. Afghanistan is in a state of limited water, and earthquakes
are common.

Afghanistan education was based on religion but now it is following the styles of western
schools. Twelve years of primary and secondary school was expected. In the mid 1980
Afghanistan had 800 hundred primary schools. A civil war broke out recently in Afghanistan,
because of lack of education. In Afghanistan the main religion is Islam. Almost everything in
Afghanistan is based on religion. They pray five times a day everyday. About eighty four percent
of muslims in Afghanistan are Sunnites and fifteen are Shiites. An important figure in Afghan
life is the Mullah or the religious leader.
