Ron Gardiner 2013 ID Project Description The target audience is elementary school teachers. After three hours of instruction they will learn how to use Smart Notebook 11 to create an original Smart Board activity appropriate for their content area and grade.
Learning Goal Given a Windows XP, 7 or 8, OS personal computer with SMART Notebook 11 software, Internet access, relevant curriculum references and resources, , learners will correctly create a functional multipage SMART Board lesson or activity containing 8 or more of the following 15 elements. 1. Prepare a blank page 2. Activity Builder element 3. Internet browser window 4. Text elements 5. Crayon drawing 6. Insert graphic 7. Irregular shape fill 8. Grouped objects 9. Custom Creative Pen drawing 10. Fading ink drawing 11. Table elements 12. Gallery item 13. SMART Response Title page 14. Smart Response question 15. Linking Type of Learning: Intellectual Skills: Anderson (1976) described this type of learning as procedural
knowledge. . . Procedural knowledge is knowing how, and declarative knowledge is knowing what (Smith & Ragan, 2005, p. 80).
Information Processing Analysis 1. Prepare the blank Smart Notebook file a. Turn on personal computer b. Locate Smart Notebook program c. Launch program d. Click File & Save As e. Name file First_Last_Notebook11 f. Change file location to My Documents/Documents g. From the menu bar, click View & Full Page Screen Border i. Select Full Screen (4:3) ii. Remember to keep all text and graphic elements above the bottom boarder h. From the View Screens icon in the toolbar, select Entire Page i. Save file i. Note: Save frequently and after all major changes and revisions 2. Create Activity Builder activity a. Discuss Activity builder b. From the menu bar, click View & Gallery c. In the search bar type elephant d. Select one of the elephant pictures and drag it from the Gallery to the blank page e. Right click the elephant picture. Locate locking, and select lock in place. f. Repeat the procedure, typing food in the search bar, and select three things that are healthy for an elephant would eat, such as apples or carrots. As well as three things that are unhealthy for an elephant to eat, such as candy and chocolate. Click and drag your choices to the page. g. Right click your food items, select the silver button in the lower right corner of the image, and resize the food images so that they are smaller than the elephant h. Do not lock the food images. i. Locate and click Add-ons tab j. Click Activity Builder icon from the side of the screen The activity builder icon looks like a piece of a puzzle k. Click the activity builder icon under the add-ons bar l. Click the how to build and activity link i. Follow the on screen directions. ii. When finished click done m. Click View and Page Sorter i. Test your activity by dragging items to the elephant.

ii. If all items function as expected proceed. iii. Click Edit and Reset. 1. Confirm by clicking the reset page button iv. If not return to step I and repeat the procedure. Add text to the page (Title) a. From the menu barm, click View & Page Sorter b. From the toolbar select the Text Tool c. Select a desired font (Elephant) and size (36) i. With the test tool selected position the curser near the top of the page and type What does an Elephant eat? d. Change the text tool back to the selection tool (Black Arrow) From the menu bar, click Insert and Blank page i. The blank page will appear in the page sort view Insert Internet Browser a. From the menu bar, click Insert and Internet browser b. The Internet browser will appear in the blank page i. If it does not return to 5.a and repeat the procedure. c. Using an external Internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Chrome Foxfire or Safari, search for an appropriate webpage on elephants. For example http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/animals/creaturefeature/africanelephant/ d. Copy and paste the URL from the web browser to the Internet browser in the Smart Notebook Internet Browser i. After you past the link into the SMART Notebook Internet Browser, click the pin so that this page loads every time you open the document. e. Save, close and, reopen the document to verify that this feature is working. i. If your webpage open is the SMART Internet browser, continue, if not repeat steps 5.c-e. Insert Attachment a. From the menu bar, click Insert and blank page. b. Insert Picture file i. Using an external Internet browser type the following url: http://goo.gl/A2PwX ii. Right click the elephant image. Change the file name to elephant_outline, and save the file the PC. iii. From the page sorter view, click Insert & Picture File iv. Locate the file elephant_outline and click open.
1. Part of the image is below the bottom screen page boarder, so the image will have to be resized. v. Locate the silver button on the lower right corner of the graphic. vi. Click and drag the shape until it is above the lower page border. vii. Right click the graphic and select locking & lock in place. viii. Save your work ix. Check your work by trying to move the elephant graphic. If the elephant does not move proceed to 7 Irregular Fill Shapes. If the elephant moves repeat steps 6.b.vii-ix. 7. Irregular shape fill a. From the menu bar, click insert and blank page. b. From the toolbar select the pen tool i. The pen tool looks like three crayons: red, blue and green. c. From the tool bar select the Pen Types tool. i. The pen tool looks like a silver and black crayon inside a red square. d. Select Pen. i. Select ink color of choice, but do not make a choice that has dotted or dashed lines. e. Using the Pen tool, draw a free hand elephant on the blank page. i. Take care to use a single stroke to draw the closed shape. f. After the drawing is complete, select the fill tool. i. The fill tool looks like a paint bucket being poured. g. Select a color of choice h. Fill in closed shapes with various colors. i. Any shapes that do not fill are 1. Either not closed 2. Drawn with more than one stroke. i. It is not necessary to redraw and refill any shapes that do not fill. 8. Group elements a. From the menu bar, click insert and blank page. b. Select the shapes tool i. The shapes tool has a blue circle and an orange square. c. To draw a shape, put the curser on the blank page and while holding the left mouse button, pull or push the mouse to make a shape of a desired size. d. On the blank page draw a star and a square. e. Change back to the select tool in order to resize and preposition the shapes so that the star fits inside the square.
f. Highlight both items by placing the select tool above and to the left of both shapes and drag the curse down and to the right until both shapes are highlighted. g. With both shapes highlighted, right click and select grouping & Group. h. Test by using the select tool to move the shapes. i. If the shapes move as one, they are properly grouped. Proceed to 9. Custom Creative Pen Drawing. If not, repeat steps 8.f-h. 9. Custom Creative Pen drawing a. From the menu bar, click insert and blank page. b. Select the pen tool and choose the Creative Pen c. From the menu bar, click view and properties i. Select use a custom stamp image. ii. Click Browse and search the computer for and image to be used d. Using the creative pen, draw on the blank page. The result should be a repetition of the selected images. If it is not, repeat step. 9. 10. Fading ink drawing (When using fading ink the ink fades away after several seconds.) a. From the menu bar, click insert and blank page. b. From the toolbar select pens. i. Choose a pen from Pen Types 1. The Magic Pen ink fades after 6 seconds, so do not select this one. c. From the menu bar, click view and properties d. Select the Fill Effects option e. Check the box next to Enable ink to fade after you write it. f. Use the pull down menu to select a fade time. g. Test by writing on the blank page and waiting until think disappears. i. If the ink disappears move to 11. Table Elements ii. If the ink remains repeat steps 10.b-g 11. Table elements a. From the menu bar, click insert and blank page. b. From the menu bar, click insert and table. c. In the insert table popup, select i. Number of columns: 5 ii. Number of rows: 4 iii. Check Make cells square d. Click ok. i. If the table is larger than screen view, from the menu bar, click view & zoom to adjust the size of the viewing area. e. Use the silver circle at the lower right corner of the table to change its size.
i. If the silver circle is not visible, highlight the table as discussed in step 8.f f. Using the select tool click into the upper left square. i. Ensure that the cell is highlighted before proceeding g. Write your first name in the first cell in the first row h. Write your last name in the second cell in the second row i. Write the month in the third cell in the third row j. Write the year in the last cell in the bottom row k. Highlight the table as described in step 8.f l. Continue using the select tool to i. Change the font to comic san serif ii. Change the font size to 16 iii. Justify the text to centered iv. Select the color tool 1. Fill color, light blue 2. Line color, black 3. Text color, red m. Select the more text options button to: (the more text options button is a red capital A with two horizontal lines on the right side i. Change the text to vertical ii. Add bullets n. Performed correctly, the table should have a blue background with black lines and red text. The text should be vertically aligned be bullitized. o. If incorrect, repeat steps as necessary to fix. p. The table may be locked in place or left unlocked at the users discretion 12. Insert a Gallery item a. From the menu bar select view and gallery b. Select Lesson Activity Toolkit c. From the Lesson activity toolkit select Interactive and Multimedia d. Scroll down to find dice-numbers (English) e. Drag two dice to the blank page f. Turn on computer speakers g. Click on the dice. Correctly inserted they should spin and a voice should call out the number as the spinning ends. 13. Insert SMART Response Title page a. From the menu bar, click insert and SMART Response Title page. b. Complete the Assessment Information pop up box c. Click add when complete d. When the title page appears Complete the Grade, Subject and Date fields 14. Insert SMART Response Question
a. Discuss how SMART Response questions must work with the available SMART Responder (clicker) i. Insert Yes or No question 1. Type question in field 2. Click next 3. Select the correct answer a. Yes b. No c. Opinion 4. Complete explanation field, if desired. ii. Click insert another, select multiple choice, and click next. 1. Type question, and click next. 2. Select number of choices (4) 3. Type in three incorrect choices and one randomly placed correct response 4. Click next and select the correct response. iii. Click insert another, select number, fraction or decimal, and click next. 1. Type the question in the blank and click next. 2. Type the correct answer and click insert another iv. Click insert and other, select true or false, and click next 1. Type the answer in the blank and click next 2. Select the correct answer: True, false, or opinion v. Click insert another, select multiple answer and click next 1. Type the question in the blank and click next 2. Select number of choices and enter a response in each blank, making one the correct response 3. Click next and select the correct answer 4. Click finish 15. Insert links a. From the menu bar, click insert and blank page. b. From the menu bar, click insert and link i. Webpage 1. Select Web page and type a url such as www.smarttech.com/training 2. Select corner icon or object depending on which you will use to launch the hyperlink 3. Click ok
4. Test the link by clicking on the corner icon or the object, depending on which you chose. 5. If successful continue, if not return to 18.b.i ii. Page in this file 1. Select a page from the available choices. 2. Select corner icon or object depending on which you will use to launch the hyperlink 3. Click ok 4. Test the link by clicking on the corner icon or the object, depending on which you chose. 5. If successful continue, if not return to 18.b.ii iii. File on this computer 1. Browse for a file on this computer 2. Select insert a copy of file 3. Select corner icon or object depending on which you will use to launch the hyperlink 4. Click ok 5. Test the link by clicking on the corner icon or the object, depending on which you chose. 6. If successful continue, if not return to 18.b.iii iv. Current attachment 1. Select current attachment 2. Select from one of the available files 3. Select corner icon or object depending on which you will use to launch the hyperlink 4. Click ok 5. Test the link by clicking on the corner icon or the object, depending on which you chose. 6. If successful you are ready to begin a project of your own, if not return to 18.b.iii
