UofC FortiClient VPN November 20, 2018

VPN provides a safe way to connect to the University of Calgary network from any off-campus location.

IT uses Fortinet technology for its VPN services. Fortinet provides FortiClient SSL VPN client software for Windows,
Macintosh, and Linux. IT distributes these clients free of charge to members of the university community.

Download and install


Depending on your operating system you will download the distribution file which is for your operating system

Windows Installation Instructions


Extract the files from the distribution file, open the extracted folder to find the install Windows Batch File. Run the install
script as Administrator (Right click install). You may be prompted to confirm the installation.

You can find the FortiClient (Green shield with a check mark) program In the Windows
notification area (Bottom right corner of task bar)

Click on the FortiClient icon can you can select to Connect to “Administrative VPN” to be used
with UC SecurID or Connect to “General VPN” for other UC access.

Mac OX Installation Instructions


Open the distribution file with DiskImageMounter application.

Locate and run the Install.mpkg

Follow the prompts through the Introduction,


License Agreement and Destination Select.

Click Install to install the FortiClient software.

You may be prompt to enter your Username and password to


Install Software.

When the installation is complete you can Close the window.

Look for the FortiClient icon at the top right of the Menu bar.

Click on the FortiClient icon can you can select to Connect to “Administrative VPN” to be used with UC SecurID or
Connect to “General VPN” for other UC access.

Troubleshooting the installation


 Make sure you have uninstalled any previous releases of the FortiClient

 You may need to restart your computer after the installation

 If you have problems accessing a shared drive check that you are not running third party security software which
may be blocking your connection.

Contact IT Support at 403-220-5555 or sign in to the IT Support portal https://ucalgary.service-now.com/it to submit a


request for assistance.
