ANALYZING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PRIMARY SOURCES
TO THE HISTORY OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

This module emphasizes the importance of familiarizing oneself about the different kinds of
historical sources. The historian’s primary tool of understanding and interpreting the past is the
historical sources. Historical sources ascertain historical facts. Such facts are then analyzed and
interpreted by the historian to weave historical narrative.
Specifically, historians who study certain historical subjects and events need to make use of
various primary sources in order to weave the narrative. Primary sources as discussed are consist of
document, memoir, accounts, and other materials that were produced at the period of the event or
subject being studied.

SECTION 7: PHILIPPINE CARTOONS: POLITICAL CARICATURES OF THE AMERICAN ERA

OBJECTIVE:

Though the Philippines was in a better condition under the Americans compared to the
Spaniards, freedom was not immediately accorded to the Filipinos. Some Americans and Filipinos used
political cartoons to illustrate the changing mores and times under the American rule. The use of these
cartoons was a subtle way of expressing discontent with the American rule.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of this module, the students are expected to:

1. Identify the significance of political cartoons during the American period


2. Use political cartoons as a reform of political expression
3. Explain the importance of political cartoons to the grand narrative of Philippine history

A. On the Use of Caricatures

Instructions: cartoons made during the time of the American Colonization were classified
according to their purpose: economic, political, and socio-cultural. From the compilation of
caricatures made by Alfred McCoy and Alfredo Roces, provide an example for each of the
following classifications of caricatures and explain the message being conveyed to the readers.

1. Economic

Dramatic increase in Manila’s population resulted to rising of rent and high food prices.
ANALYSIS Harrison’s solution to the problem was band aid solution rather than
implementing fundamental reform like public housing construction. The Filipino elite were
favoured for their loyalty to the government.

Filipinos have been historically divided. 1. Landlord vs tenants 2. Christians vs NonChristians
3. Pro vs the antis.

Americans introduced a free and more democratic educational system in the Philippines
ANALYSIS Both editorials depict the results of the introduction of American Education in the
Philippine system. 1. Gender equality in education 2. Accessibility of Education.

B. Time to Sketch

Instructions: Make your own caricature depicting any present political, economic, or socio-
cultural situation in the Philippines. Provide a short explanation for the
symbolisms that you used.

C. Funny Komiks
Instructions: Aside from caricature, comic strips are widely used to serve as political
commentaries. In 2014, the website Dead Balagtas became popular because of its online
comic strip series called Komiks, Kasaysayan at Katatawanan which humorously
presented the different valuable points in Philippine History.

Create your own comic strip with at least scenes depicting any present political,
economical, social, and cultural issue in the Philippines. Make sure that it is humorous.
