Tissues are groups of similar cells that perform common functions. Meristematic tissue is a living tissue found in growing plant regions capable of cell division. There are two types of meristematic tissue: apical meristem found at the tips of shoots and roots responsible for increasing plant length, and intercalary meristem located between mature tissues enabling growth in width.

Tissues

A group of cells that are similar in structure and perform common

function is called tissues.

1
Meristematic Tissue
● These are living tissues capable of division.

● Found in growing regions of plant.

● Responsible for growth in length and width of the plant.

Types (On the basis of location)

2
Characteristics of Meristematic Tissues

Cells of these tissues are commonly called Meristem
tissue.

They have very small and few vacuoles.

Meristematic Tissue is living and thin walled.

Meristematic Tissue heals wounds of an injured plant.

Cells of meristematic tissue are young and immature.

3
Apical Meristem

It is present in the growing tips of shoots and roots.

They are responsible for increase in length of shoot and root.

4
Some Facts !

Apical meristem are region of cells capable of division and
growth in the root and shoot tips in plants.

Apical meristems give rise to the primary plant body and
are responsible for the extension of the roots and shoots.

Unlike most animals, plants continue to grow throughout
their entire life span because of the unlimited division of
these and other meristems.
