Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Project Background

The COVID-19 outbreak, known as corona was first confirmed in Wuhan City, Hubei Province,
China, in December 2019. This virus has swiftly spread around the world caused many deaths
(Azhari and Fajri, 2021). The disease has a rapid impact on all aspects of human life. The Covid-
19 pandemic has resulted In Unexpected damage to the global education system, and also
various measurable economic impacts in long and short term. To reduce the number of Covid-19
cases, the Minister of Education issued a circular on 24th March, 2020; controls the execution of
education during the emergency spread of Covid-19, as is also done by many countries (Budi
Hermanto and Agustini Srimulyani, 2021). It has an impact on over 290 million students. The
majority of the students are from China (Girik Allo, 2020). As a precautionary step against its
spread, many countries have decided to close schools, colleges, and institution. According to the
United Nation (UN), education is one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic (Putri,
Purwanto, Pramono and Asbari, 2020). Many institutes of higher education shifted classes to
online platforms as a result of the suspension of face-to-face classes (Kaisara and Bwalya,
2021).

As suspension of face-to-face classes, students were forced to study through online learning by
the development of information and communication technology (Adnan and Anwar, 2020). This
is one of the alternative forms of learning that was implemented during Covid-19 emergency.
This policy applies at the schools, colleges, and institution levels. This step is considered to be
necessary to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the schools or campus environment. Even if
schools or colleges are closed, online learning may be an efficient way to reactivate classrooms
(Budi Hermanto and Agustini Srimulyani, 2021). Online learning is defined as learning that
occurs via the use of internet networks and includes accessibility, connectivity, flexibility, and
the capacity to conduct various types of learning interactions (Nadeak, 2020). They include
elements like whiteboards, chat rooms, polls, quizzes, discussion forums, and surveys that
enable instructors and students to connect online while also sharing course information (Mukhtar
and Javed, 2020). Current technological developments allow online learning to be implemented
well and Several countries encounter several challenges and limitations in the process of
distance learning, For example Most schools in Indonesia, however, do not have such a privilege
in terms of online learning materials and facilities (Putri, Purwanto, Pramono and Asbari, 2020).

Chapter 2: Literature Review
2.1 Negative Consequences of online learning
According to the findings of my investigation, students are undergoing various type of
challenges through online learning. (Mukhtar, K. and Javed, K., 2020) have said that students
are unable to learn practically to understand more. Having a practical learning approach is one of
the most effective ways to understand a difficult concept. Another researcher (Mehmet Kara)
state that students having overload work, financial problem, lack of organizational support, and
limited time to study. Moreover, after investigating numerus article, most common problem
students facing was availability of internet access. (Azhari, B. and Fajri,) stated that many
students do not have reliable internet connection. The most important need for online learning is
internet connectivity; without it, no student would be able to view any materials that the lecturer
has posted. Many additional articles demonstrate that internet access is a big issue for students.
Finally, many parents are worried about the health risks of their children spending so much time
looking at a screen. One of the most severe problems and problems of online education is the in-
screen time. Students who learn online must sit in a specific position in order to concentrate on
their studies, and as a result, they acquire terrible posture and other physical problems as a result
of being hunched in front of a computer (Mehmet Kara 2019)

2.2 Positive Consequences of online learning

Moving on to the advantages of online learning. Based on the investigation, The benefit of
online education is that students may take classes from any place of their choosing. It also
enables institutions to reach out to a larger network of students rather than being limited by
physical presence. Online lectures can also be recorded, stored, and shared for future reference.
This enables students to access the learning material at their convenience. Secondly, advantage
of online learning is that it saves money. When compared to traditional schooling, online
education is considerably more inexpensive. This is due to the fact that online learning reduces
the costs of student transportation and food expenses. Moreover, online learning also helps
students to improve attendance. Because online classes may be attended from home or any other
location, students are less likely to miss out on sessions (Putri, Purwanto, Pramono and Asbari,
2020).

Chapter 3: Research Methodology
3.1 Overview
For this research, I will construct my own questionnaire based on those created by previous
researchers in order to determine what are the challenges students going through in this
pandemic. The questionnaire will be updated, and numerous additional questions related to the
issue, which is the challenges students go through online learning during the Covid-19
pandemic, will be included. This study looks at the issues that students have when participating
in online learning and suggests solutions and ways to avoid them. I've also added a literature
review as part of the technique to gain a better understanding of the challenge’s students go
through online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic

3.2 Population and Study Sample

Students from Segi College Subang Jaya compensate the majority of the population. The
participants will be Malaysian and international students. The students is randomly selected to
this research to participate.

3.3 Sample Size and Selection of Sample

A total of 30 students, regardless of gender, were picked at random from across Segi campus to
take part in the prepared questionnaire. The sample size will be divided into different age groups
to ensure the accuracy of the study.

3.4 Sources of Data

To guarantee the validity of my research, I acquired material from a variety of sources on the
internet, including journal papers, documents, and from a genuine website that includes the
publisher and author, as well as the year, date, and time, I’ve checked the information's
legitimacy and then determine whether or not the material is trustworthy.

3.5 Data Analysis Strategies

To acquire information for my study, I will use a quantitative data analysis method. Quantitative
approaches place an emphasis on objective and the numerical analysis of data collected through
questionnaires and survey. The survey contained 10 multiple-choice questions and 5 questions
that respondents have to answer on their own by entering the answer. The survey was conducted
with 30 Segi students from July 5 to July 11, 2021. To reach a conclusion, the data will be
analysed in quantitative method.

Chapter 5: Recommendations
5.1 Assumption

My assumption for this report is that students are facing many challenges that parents and
teachers are not aware of.

5.2 Problem Encountered

The main problem I’ve encountered during the research was data about the challenges students
faced during pandemic. There are not many researchers doing research about this topic.

5.3 Research Limitation

The survey I distributed was restricted to 35 persons. Not only that, the data from google scholar
was also limited for this specific topic which is problem faced by students during the pandemic.

14
Chapter 6: Conclusion
Based on my study above, it may be concluded that students' perceptions of online learning
indicate that they dislike online learning and prefer face-to-face learning. This study not only
concludes that student’s perception of online learning, but also spotted the light on the problem
that actually students face during the online learning. The problem students faced during online
learning is, poor internet connectivity, lack of interaction, technical issues. Other difficulties are
associated with learner isolation, frustration, pressure, more expenses, health concerns. Parents
and teachers should know the problem that students face during this pandemic and try to prevent
it.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic covid-19 has caused the campus learning system to shift dramatically from face-
to-face sessions to online distance learning. This requires a shift in nearly all human activity,
including education services, to digital technology (Nadeak, 2020). This research study is to
examines the challenges students go through online learning during covid-19 pandemic. The
research method that will be used is by distributing questionnaires in a survey form to students
to fill up via WhatsApp and telegram. The outcome of questionnaires will conclude the
advantage and disadvantages of students going through online learning during this pandemic.
The conclusion is to investigate what are the obstacle students going through in this pandemic
situation and to overcome it.

19
Introduction

The COVID-19 outbreak, know as corona was first confirmed in Wuhan City, Hubei Province,
China, in December 2019. This virus has swiftly spread around the world caused many deaths
(Azhari and Fajri, 2021). The disease has a rapid impact on all aspects of human life. The Covid-

online platforms as a result of the suspension of face-to-face classes (Kaisara and Bwalya,

Online learning is defined as learning that

in terms of online learning materials and facilities (Putri, Purwanto, Pramono and Asbari, 2020).

The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 breakouts on the
transition of face-to-face learning to online learning. This study specifically investigates students
to share the obstacles and problems faced by online learning as well as strategies.

20
Problem statement

Overview
It can be seen that online learning has been adopted in most parts of the country. The Covid-19
crisis has had an unprecedented impact on education. The education of more than 90 percent
students globally was disrupted by institutional closures (Baczek, 2021). When the pandemic
struck, the education sector was clearly not prepared and had to look for an immediate solution.
E-learning was the preferred option. As the suspension of face-to-face learning, online learning
is not easy as well. There is advantages and disadvantages of online learning. A recent research
done by researchers proofs many students are going through challenges during this pandemic
(Priyo Atmojo and Nugroho, 2020). For example, there is no defined corporate online learning
strategy (Kaisara and Bwalya, 2021). Research also shows that these challenges can make
students lose focus on their studies as the online learning is the only solution by far.

Research Question/Hypothesis
Based on the research I’ve done; many articles shows that students are having problems in
online learning. Students find it difficult to upskill their knowledge with the technology needed
for online learning and in such a short period of time. (Putri, Purwanto, Pramono and Asbari,
2020). Besides that, students also have lack of interaction problem. The lack of interaction with
both instructors and students may be very difficult. Using videoconferencing programmes is the
easiest method to avoid a lack of interaction. Zoom, skype, or face time are a few examples.
According to Mehmet Kara, students face adaptability, technical issue, computer knowledge,
time management problem during this pandemic trying to adapt online learning.

21
OBJECTIVES AND AIMS

Overall Objective
The primary goal of this research is to investigate what are the challenges students go through
online learning. This research is also to determine whether online learning is affecting students
in a good or bad way by collecting data after questionnaire is distributed.

Specific Aims
The main purpose of this study to determine the efficacy of online learning and to draw attention
to the difficulties and obstacles that students experience when learning online. This study will
assist parents in understanding their children's online learning issues. For the teachers, this will
make teachers know about the problem students going through and try to prevent the problems.
Finally for students, they will understand there is a way to prevent whatever the problems

22
BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE

Negative Consequences of online learning.

According to the findings of my investigation, students are undergoing various type of
challenges through online learning. (Mukhtar, K. and Javed, K., 2020) have said that students
are unable to learn practically to understand more. Having a practical learning approach is one of

screen time. Students who learn online must sit in a specific position in order to concentrate on
their studies, and as a result, they acquire terrible posture and other physical problems as a result
of being hunched in front of a computer (Mehmet Kara 2019)

Positive Consequences of online learning.

Moving on to the advantages of online learning. Based on the investigation, The benefit of

researchers in order to determine what are the challenges students going through in this

Population and Study Sample

Students from Segi College Subang Jaya compensate the majority of the population. The
participants will be Malaysian and international students. The students is randomly selected to
this research to participate.

Sample Size and Selection of Sample

A total of 30 students, regardless of gender, were picked at random from across Segi campus to
take part in the prepared questionnaire. The sample size will be divided into different age groups
to ensure the accuracy of the study.

Sources of Data
To guarantee the validity of my research, I acquired material from a variety of sources on the
internet, including journal papers, documents, and from a genuine website that includes the
publisher and author, as well as the year, date, and time, I’ve checked the information's
legitimacy and then determine whether or not the material is trustworthy.

Data Analysis Strategies

To acquire information for my study, I will use a quantitative data analysis method. Quantitative
approaches place an emphasis on objective and the numerical analysis of data collected through
questionnaires and survey. The survey contained 10 multiple-choice questions and 5 questions
that respondents have to answer on their own by entering the answer. The survey will be
conducted with 30 Segi students from July 5 to July 11, 2021. To reach a conclusion, the data
will be analysed in quantitative method.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Study

Based on my research, online learning has more weaknesses than strengths. One of the major
problem students facing is technical issue. Many students may not have access to a high-speed
internet connection, which is necessary for online learning. Due to this, Students have
difficulties while attempting to access virtual learning that needs a high-speed internet
connection. A slow and fast internet connection may affect how quickly you can attend the class
and avoid missing any live sessions lecturers. Because of slow internet connection, students may
face difficulty in downloading materials. Secondly, students are suffering by time management.
With online learning, students have problems managing their time. Online learning is entirely
new to students and it takes a significant amount of effort. They require a timetabled plan to
effectively manage their time. Unlike traditional classrooms, online learning allows you more
flexibility in scheduling. However, some people struggle to adjust to the time investment
necessary for online learning. Besides that, communication is also a part of student’s problem
during online learning. Because of the new online learning mode, some students are afraid to
communicate with their instructors and friends. It might be due to a lack of interest, a lack of
technological skills.

Moving on to the strengths of online learning. Despite the fact that this study has several
weaknesses that overshadow its strengths, it also has its strengths. Firstly, flexibility and its
convenience. Students can study whenever they want. Online courses allow you to spend your
time with, family, friends, significant others, or any other activity that interests you. Students
may study on their own pace. Improving communication skills is also an advantage for students.
Online learning requires students to improve their virtual and textual communication skills.
