Sample Calculation
Pavement design is carried out by preparing a 3D continuum finite element model of pavement
section of a typical plan area (mentioned in the respective design section ) modelled in STAAD
Pro. The various pavement layers are idealized with 8 noded solid elements.
The vertical faces of solid elements in the outer periphery are restrained for movement in
horizontal direction and each node in horizontal plane at the bottom level is restrained for
movement in vertical direction only.
● For static loads (container stacking), the maximum horizontal tensile stress which develops in
the base layer shall be less than the flexural strength of the DLC base which is 20% of 28-day
UCS value (MPa) i.e. 3 MPa (20% of 15 MPa) as per IRC 37-2018.
● For dynamic loads, the cumulative fatigue damage (CFD) ratio in the DLC base shall be less
than 1. (Clause 3.6.3.2, IRC:37-2018)
● The CFD ratio is the ratio of expected repetitions to the allowable repetitions. The allowable
repetitions of SEWL of vehicles are calculated using the flexural stress obtained from STAAD
analysis.

28 Galvanising
The tower parts, stubs and pack washers shall be hot dip galvanized as per requirements of IS 4759 and
guidelines from 2629 for recommended practice of hot dip galvanization after all fabrication work is
completed. For coastal areas, the fabricated tower parts and stubs shall have a minimum overall zinc
coating of 900 gm/ sqm of surface area except for plates and sections below 5mm which shall have a
minimum overall zinc coating of 610 gm/sqm of surface area. The average zinc coating for all sections
and plates 5mm and above shall be maintained as 127 microns and that for plates and sections below
5mm shall be maintained as 87 microns.
For Non coastal areas, the fabricated tower parts and stubs shall have a minimum overall zinc coating
of 610 gm/ sqm of surface area except for plates and sections below 5mm which shall have a minimum
overall zinc coating of 460 gm/sqm of surface area. The average zinc coating for all sections and plates
5mm and above shall be maintained as 87 microns and that for plates and sections below 5mm shall be
maintained as 65.2 microns.
Fully galvanized towers and stub shall be used for the lines. Galvanizing of the member of the towers
shall conform to IS:2629-1985 . All galvanizing members shall withstand tests as per IS:2633-1986. For
fasteners the galvanizing shall conform to IS:1367 (Part-13). The galvanizing shall be done after all
fabrication work is completed, except that the nuts may be tapped or re-run after galvanizing. Threads
of bolts and nuts shall have a neat fit and shall be such that they can be turned with finger throughout
the length of the threads of bolts and they shall be capable of developing full strength of the bolts.
Spring washers shall be electro-galvanised as per grade 4 of IS: 1573-1970. IS:5358 shall also refereed for
the various guidelines for galvanization process for various transmission line items.
29 ANTI-CLIMBING DEVICE
Barbed wire type anti climbing device, as per enclosed drawing shall be provided and installed by the
Contractor for all towers. The barbed wire shall conform to IS 278 (size designation A1). The barbed wires
