WHAT IS A SUBQUERY?
A subquery is a query within another query. It helps
break down complex queries into smaller, more
manageable pieces. Subqueries can be used in
SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE statements.

TYPES OF SUBQUERIES
Single-row Subquery: Returns a single row and
column.
Multi-row Subquery: Returns multiple rows and a
single column.
Correlated Subquery: Uses values from the outer
query and runs for each row in the outer query.

USING SUBQUERIES
Single-row Subquery Example

SELECT first_name, last_name


FROM customers
WHERE customer_id = (SELECT
MAX(customer_id) FROM customers);

This query returns the first and last name of the


customer with the highest customer_id.

Multi-row Subquery Example

SELECT first_name, last_name


FROM customers
WHERE customer_id IN (SELECT
customer_id FROM orders WHERE
order_date = '2024-01-01');

This query returns the first and last names of customers


who placed orders on January 1, 2024.

SELECT first_name, last_name


FROM customers c
WHERE EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM orders o
WHERE o.customer_id = c.customer_id
AND o.order_date = '2024-01-01');

This query returns the first and last names of customers


who placed orders on January 1, 2024, using a
correlated subquery.
