Case Study On Control Systems Guided by Mrs - SK.Daryabi Associate Professor

The document describes a case study on finding the intersection point of the root locus with the jω-axis for the transfer function G(S)H(S)=. It provides definitions of root locus and rules for constructing it. It then shows the steps to solve the given problem: identifying poles and zeroes, asymptote angles, the centroid, breakaway point, and using the Routh array to find the intersection points at j(1.73) and j(-1.73). Advantages of root locus include easy performance prediction while disadvantages include requiring the transfer function. Applications are in analyzing system pole locations and predicting transients.

ROOT LOCUS
• Graphical representation in complex S plane of the possible locations
of the closed loop poles.
RULES FOR ROOT LOCUS
• Root
locus is symmetrical about X axis
• Root locus starts from open loop poles and terminates at either open loop zero or
infinity
• No.of root locus branches = no.of poles (If poles > zeroes)
= no.of zeroes(if zeroes > poles)
• Root locus has a branch if no.of poles + no.of zeroes on the left half of S plane
must be odd
• Angle of asymptotes
If poles > zeroes , θ = , q = 0,1,2……….p-z-1
If zeroes > poles , θ = , q = 0,1,2……….z-p-1
RULES FOR ROOT LOCUS
•  Centroid: The asymptotes meet the real axis at centroid
centroid (G) = θ =
• Break away point:
It exists between two poles
• Break in point:
It exists between two zeroes
• Intersection of root locus on imaginary axes:
It is found by using Routh criterion
SOLUTION FOR GIVEN STATEMENT
•Given
  , , H(s) = 1 (as unity feedback)
Step – 1: Identify the poles and zeroes
poles are 0, -1, -3
No.of poles = p = 3
Zeroes doesn’t exist for given transfer function
Step – 2: Identify the angle of asymptotes
As poles > zeroes , θ = , q = 0,1,2
On solving we get θ1 = 60º, θ2 = 180º, θ3 = 300º
Step – 3: centroid (G) =
= = = -1.3333
Step – 4:ROUGH GRAPH OF ROOT LOCUS
•Step
  – 5: Break away point
1+G(s)H(s) = 0
s3+4s2+3s+k = 0
k = -(s3+4s2+3s)
= -(3s2+8s+3) = 0
On solving we get s = -0.45, -2.21
-2.21 lies on the path where root locus doesn’t exist and -0.45 lies on the
path where root locus exists
Hence break away point is -0.45
Point of intersection with imaginary axis
•• Step
  – 6: ROUTH ARRAY
Characteristic equation : 1+ G(s)H(s)
= s3+4s2+3s+k

s3 1 3 0

s2 4 k 0

s 0 0

s0 k 0 0
Point of intersection with imaginary axis
•  Equating = 0(as marginal) we get k = 12

• The auxiliary equation is:

• 4s2 + k = 0
• 4s2 + 12 = 0
• s2 =
• s = j(1.73), j(-1.73)
THE ROOT LOCUS
ROOT LOCUS
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

• Good indicator of transient
response
APPLICATIONS OF ROOT LOCUS

• Useful to check the places where the poles of the system are located
• Used to predict the transient response of the system
