Diffusion

Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration down a concentration gradient. The rate of diffusion is affected by several factors including concentration gradient, temperature, and the relative molecular masses of the diffusing substances. Lighter molecules with higher kinetic energy will diffuse more rapidly than heavier ones with lower kinetic energy. Examples of diffusion occurring in solids, liquids, and gases are provided.

Lo 2 : Describe and explain the effect of relative
molecular mass on the rate of diffusion of gases
• Keywords:
• Diffusion
• Molecular mass
• Kinetic energy
Starter:

• There are 2 gases present is

the lab NH3 and Cl2. The
mass of Cl2 is greater. We
take the 2 bottles to one
corner of the lab and open
them. Which smell of gas do
you think you will smell first
if you are at the other corner
of the lab?

• Which 2 gases have you added in the experiment?

• What is/ are your observations?
• Where is the fumes forming?
• What is your conclusion?
Task 1:
Task 2:

• Create a matching activity in your group and share it with the other group.
The group that gets most answers correct will win
Task 3:

• Write an essay on diffusion

• Write one example of each on
